Investigation Of The Relevance Of Heart Rate Variability Changes After Heart Transplantation, Sheeba Arnold Jan 2000

Investigation Of The Relevance Of Heart Rate Variability Changes After Heart Transplantation, Sheeba Arnold

Theses

Heart transplantation has become an established treatment for end-stage heart disease. However, the shortage of donor organs is a major problem and long-term results are limited by allograft rejection. Heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as a popular noninvasive research tool in cardiology. Analysis of HRV is regarded as a valid technique to assess the sympathovagal balance of the heart. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the relevance of heart rate variability changes after heart transplantation. It was found that spectral analysis of HRV is useful in detecting rejection episodes. Heart transplantation leaves the donor heart denervated. …

Integration Of Multi Lifecycle Assessment And Design For Environment Database Using Relational Moddel Concepts, Bhagyashree Suratran Jan 2000

Integration Of Multi Lifecycle Assessment And Design For Environment Database Using Relational Moddel Concepts, Bhagyashree Suratran

Theses

Multi-lifecycle Assessment (MLCA) systematically considers and quantifies the consumption of resources and the environmental impact associated with a product or process. Design challenges posed by a multi-lifecycle strategy are significantly more complex than traditional product design. The designer must look forward in time to maximize the product's end-of-life yield of assemblies, parts and materials while looking backward to the world of existing products for feedstock sources for the current design. As MLCA and DEE share some common data items, such as, part geometry, material and manufacturing process, it is advantageous to integrate the database for MLCA and DEE. The integration …

Physical Fitness And Fatness Among Omani Schoolboys: A Pilot Study, Hassan M. O, Al-Kharusy W Jan 2000

Physical Fitness And Fatness Among Omani Schoolboys: A Pilot Study, Hassan M. O, Al-Kharusy W

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective: To study the applicability of simple field measurements of physical fitness in a sample of Omani boys and their relationships to selected variables. Methods: Two field measures of physical fitness—the time to complete 1.6–km run/walk and the sum of 5 skin fold thicknesses—were correlated with personal and family physical activity–related and other variables in a sample of 109 Omani boys aged 9–11 years. Results: Obesity in parents, especially in the mother, showed significant correlation with both fitness measures. The waist/buttocks ratio showed no significant correlation with the 1.6–km time. The number of siblings and siblings sharing a room, number …

Psychiatric Morbidity In Northern Jordan: A Ten-Year Review, Zaidan Z, Alwash R, Al-Hussaini M, Al-Jarrah

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objective: To study the psychiatric morbidity in the northern part of Jordan and to determine the frequency distribution of various psychiatric disorders, for planning services. Methods: All records of 2,335 psychiatric patients attending the only psychiatric clinic in Northern part of Jordan during a ten-year period from 1984 to 1993 were extensively reviewed and subjected to computerized analysis. Diagnosis was made as per ICD-9. Results: Out of the 2335 patients, who attended the clinic, 55% were males and 45% were females. Those in the age group 25–44 recorded the maximum attendance. Among the male attendees of the clinic, schizophrenia was …

Laparoscopic Surgery At Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Grant C. S, Al-Kindy N, Machado S, Daar A.

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Laparoscopic surgery, which gained prominence in the late 1980s, became an established surgical practice in Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) in 1992. Drawing on available literature and the authors’ own experiences, this paper gives an overview of various laparoscopic surgical techniques currently available at SQUH, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic appendicectomy, diagnostic laparoscopy and laparoscopic varicocoelectomy. It also highlights the role of surgical endoscopic training centre at SQUH, which provides a laboratory setting for surgical trainees and practising physicians. Laparoscopic surgery at SQUH would continue to evolve spurred on by surgical innovations and advances in technology.

Responses Of Phytoplankton And Pfiesteria-Like Dinoflagellate Zoospores To Nutrient Enrichment In The Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, Usa, James L. Pinckney, Hans W. Paerl, Elin Haugen, Patricia A. Tester Jan 2000

Tester

Faculty Publications

The recently described toxic dinoflagellate Pfiestena piscicida and morphologically similar Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates have become a major water quality issue with possible fish mortality and reported human health implications. The linkages between accelerated nutrient loading, eutrophication, and the proliferation of this group of dinoflagellates, however, are not well established for natural Systems. Phytoplankton pnmary production may provide a key link between nutrient inputs and potential outbreaks of Pfiesteria-like biflagellated zoospores in the Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina. The impacts of nutrient (NO3- -nitrogen and PO43- -phosphorus) supply rates, sediment-water column exchange, water column mixing, and phytoplankton prey …
