Silencing John Doe: Defamation & Discourse In Cyberspace, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky Feb 2000

Silencing John Doe: Defamation & Discourse In Cyberspace, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky

UF Law Faculty Publications

John Doe has become a popular defamation defendant as corporations and their officers bring defamation suits for statements made about them in Internet discussion fora. These new suits are not even arguably about recovering money damages but instead are brought for symbolic reasons—some worthy, some not so worthy. If the only consequence of these suits were that Internet users were held accountable for their speech, the suits would be an unalloyed good. However, these suits threaten to suppress legitimate criticism along with intentional and reckless falsehoods, and existing First Amendment law doctrines are not responsive to the threat these suits …

In-Patient Treatment For Resistant Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Mohammed A. Al-Sughayir

Saudi Medical Journal

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is one of the increasing psychological disorders. If not detected early and treated properly, obsessive-compulsive disorder usually becomes an incapacitating illness adversely affecting almost all aspects of the patient9s life. Outpatient behavioral and pharmacotherapies frequently fail. This is a report on a severe case of obsessive-compulsive disorder that was treated as an in-patient with both behavior and pharmacotherapies, she was then followed up for 5 years with no relapse. The case reflects the importance and the need for in-patient units for severe resistant obsessive compulsive cases especially in Saudi Arabia where we have an increasing number of …

Snapshots Of Success: Examples Of Imsa Women Graduates, Marti Guarin

Examples of Student Diversity

Searching for a cure for cancer in the heart of a cell, analyzing the ecology of Illinois tall grass prairies, engineering Illinois products to precise specifications, or volunteering to help others, IMSA graduates contribute in myriad ways.

The Truth About Women's Rights, Janet Benshoof Feb 2000

The Truth About Women's Rights, Janet Benshoof

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In their article, The Rise and Fall of Women's Rights: Have Sexuality and Reproductive Freedom Forfeited Victory?, the authors Lynne Marie Kohm and Colleen Holmes launch a wide-ranging attack on women's reproductive freedoms and target not only myself but topics as diverse as gay and lesbian rights, the Vagina Monologues, and sexual freedom (without guilt or shame) for women.

This Essay is not meant to be a comprehensive response to the article. Rather, this Essay will counter Kohm's and Holmes's asserted premise-that fighting for reproductive freedoms has left feminists without the strength to fight for other rights. By doing so, …

The Price Of Law: How The Market For Lawyers Distorts The Justice System, Gillian K. Hadfield

Michigan Law Review

Bill Clinton's legal bills in connection with the Lewinsky scandal topped $10 million; the bill for Ken Starr's investigation of the President exceeded $50 million. The cost to the eight families portrayed in the bestseller A Civil Action for their tort suit against a manufacturing company accused of dumping hazardous chemicals into the water supply was $4.8 million (paid from a settlement of about $8 million); the cost for the defense exceeded $7 million. Lawyers who represented the three states in the nationwide suit by state attorneys general against tobacco companies to recoup smoking-related health care costs were awarded $8.2 …

The Differential Relations Of Parent And Peer Attachment To Adolescent Adjustment, Deborah J. Laible, Gustavo Carlo, Marcela Raffaelli

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Whether or not close emotional relationships with parents and peers serve similar functions for adolescent adjustment is an issue of increasing interest. The present study was designed to examine the relations between parent and peer attachment and adolescent adjustment. Eighty-nine adolescents (M age = 16.1 years, SD = 1.8 years) completed self-report measures of parent and peer attachment, sympathy, academic efficacy, aggression, anxiety, and depression. Adolescents were divided into four groups on the basis of their parent and peer attachment scores: those high on both, those low on both, those high on peer but low on parent attachment, and those …

The Role Of Extension Specialists In Helping Entrepreneurs Develop Successful Food-Based Businesses, Rodney Holcomb, Glenn Muske Feb 2000

The Role Of Extension Specialists In Helping Entrepreneurs Develop Successful Food-Based Businesses, Rodney Holcomb, Glenn Muske

Journal of Extension

Business planning has been found to be an important determinant of future business success. Extension specialists often have the opportunity to encourage food industry entrepreneurs to plan and can be of great service in those planning efforts. This paper discusses how Extension specialists can be such a catalyst. Specialists, in addition to providing their own expertise, can often provide local, state and national contacts. They also are excellent outside reviewers of such plans as they are able to bring the combination of basic and applied research as well as real world experience into the review process.

Intergovernmental Relations In Employment Policy: The United States Experience, Christopher J. O'Leary, Robert A. Straits Feb 2000

Intergovernmental Relations In Employment Policy: The United States Experience, Christopher J. O'Leary, Robert A. Straits

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Policies to regulate and support labor markets in the United States have mainly been an initiative of the federal government. Historically, states and localities were reluctant to act independently to build up worker rights and protections for fear of competitively disadvantaging resident industries with added costs. Federal constitutional authority to raise revenue and control commerce among the states governed development of labor market policy in the United States. Labor market support initiatives usually have been forged in difficult economic times with contributions and compromise from the full political spectrum. This paper examines the development of employment policy in the twentieth …
