Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough Mar 2000

Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Science and technology are frequently confused. This essay points out the bases for this confusion and then focuses on a basic distinction, namely, that whereas science brings us information that we have little choice but to absorb and reflect upon, technology is something that humans elect to do and, hence, can also elect not to do. It is proposed that technological ethics are most cogently undertaken with scientific understanding as the linchpin and religious/artistic sensibilities as the muse.

Negotiating Federalism: State Bargaining And The Dormant Treaty Power, Edward T. Swaine Mar 2000

Negotiating Federalism: State Bargaining And The Dormant Treaty Power, Edward T. Swaine

Duke Law Journal

The orthodox view that states have no role in U. S. foreign relations is not only inconsistent with their place in the modern global economy, but the constitutional basis for a "dormant" bar on state participation-that is, absent a controlling federal statute or treaty-is obscure. Revisionist scholarship and recent Supreme Court case law suggest that Congress alone should decide when the states must stay out of foreign relations. In this Article, Professor Swaine argues that both the orthodox and revisionist views neglect an alternative basis for a judicial role-the Treaty Clause, enforced through the dormant treaty power. The text, structure, …

Periradicular Response Of Immunodeficient Rats To Mechanical Pulpal Exposure, James E. Stich Mar 2000

Periradicular Response Of Immunodeficient Rats To Mechanical Pulpal Exposure, James E. Stich

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Periradicular lesions develop as a result of the interaction between root canal irritants and the immune system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the periradicular response of immunodeficient rats to their oral flora. Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats received a total body irradiation dose of 750 cGy one week prior to the investigation. The pulps of the mandibular first molars of these animals and six nonirradiated rats were exposed mechanically with a ½ round bur and left open to the oral cavity. Additional irradiation (350 cGy) was administered bi-weekly to maintain immunosuppression. Periradicular specimens were obtained after two and four …

Qualitative Research And The Generalizability Question: Standing Firm With Proteus, Margaret Myers Mar 2000

Qualitative Research And The Generalizability Question: Standing Firm With Proteus, Margaret Myers

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative studies are tools used in understanding and describing the world of human experience. Since we maintain our humanity throughout the research process, it is largely impossible to escape the subjective experience, even for the most seasoned of researchers. As we proceed through the research process, our humanness informs us and often directs us through such subtleties as intuition or 'aha' moments. Speaking about the world of human experience requires an extensive commitment in terms of time and dedication to process; however, this world is often dismissed as 'subjective' and regarded with suspicion. This paper acknowledges that small qualitative studies …

Childhood Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: An Immunophenotypic Analysis., Sajid Hussain Shah, Suhail Muzaffar, Shahid Pervez, Sheema H. Hassan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective: To observe the frequency of histological subtypes of childhood non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma and its immunohistochemical profile.

Setting: All cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosed in children (<15 years) in the section of histopithology at the Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi during the period of three years.

Methods: These consecutive cases were evaluated on H&E stained sections and then immunohistochemistry analysis of these tumors was performed by employing Peroxidase Anti-Peroxidase (PAP) technique.

Results: The present series included 61 cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. NHL was more common in males as compared to females with male to female ratio of 5.8:1. High grade NHL comprised 87% of childhood lymphoma. The mode of presentation in majority of NHL (57%) was extranodal. Burkitt’s lymphonia (33%) …

"Spokes Of The Wheel:" Mormon Settlement Patterns In Illinois Between 1838 And 1846, R Philip Reynolds Mar 2000

"Spokes Of The Wheel:" Mormon Settlement Patterns In Illinois Between 1838 And 1846, R Philip Reynolds

Librarian and Staff Publications

Mormon settlement outside of Nauvoo, Illinois is one of the most neglected topics in Mormon history. Almost all discussion concerning Mormons between 1839 and 1846 is limited to Nauvoo although, as one researcher put it: "Mormon contact in Illinois was infinitely larger." Nauvoo's population of about 15,000 in 1845 was only half of the estimated 30,000 Mormons who made their home in Western Illinois. Still when searching for information about Mormons living outside the city, researchers are lucky to find a handful of brief articles and a few asides in discussions of Nauvoo. Upon further investigation these settlements emerge as …

Wrongful Death: Oklahoma Supreme Court Replaces Viability Standard With "Live Birth" Standard, Fatma Marouf Mar 2000

Wrongful Death: Oklahoma Supreme Court Replaces Viability Standard With "Live Birth" Standard, Fatma Marouf

Faculty Scholarship

Since the United States Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, the line of viability for human fetuses has been consistently pushed back to earlier and earlier gestational ages. Granting "person" status to a nonviable fetus, even if only for purposes of the wrongful death statute, as the Oklahoma Supreme Court did in Nealis v. Baird, represents an important expansion of fetal rights. Although the court explicitly limited its decision to nonviable fetuses born alive, Judge Opala conceded that much of his opinion could apply equally to stillborn fetuses. The court's decision in Nealis raises important questions about …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The accuracy of ZeroBase™ orthodontic software program was tested using a sample of 14 male and 14 female untreated subjects classified as skeletal Class II pattern by the Burlington growth center. Growth predictions were carried out by ZeroBaseTM from ages 6,9,12,14,16 in males and 6,9,12 and 14 in females. The mean computer predicted value was compared with the mean radiographic value to test the accuracy of the predictions. Predictions from age 14 were the most accurate (within one standard deviation), whereas the predictions from age 6 were the least accurate. In males, the accuracy of cranial base predictions was 73.3%, …

American Lawyers And International Competence, Charlotte Ku, Christopher J. Borgen Mar 2000

American Lawyers And International Competence, Charlotte Ku, Christopher J. Borgen

Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers trained in U.S. law schools learn that the Constitution gives Congress the power "[t]o define and punish... offenses against the Law of Nations." Some might also be able to cite the oft-quoted dicta from the Supreme Court's decision in The Paquete Habana that "International law is part of our law, and must be ascertained and administered by the courts of justice of appropriate jurisdiction, as often as questions of right depending upon it are duly presented for their determination." But what does this mean for today's practitioner? One century after Paquete Habana, we ask what is international law, …

Periprosthetic Humeral Shaft Fracture Caused By Stretching Exercises After Shoulder Hemiarthroplasty: A Casereport, Han-Jay Chiu, Yung-Ching Lin, Zong-Jing Wang Mar 2000

Periprosthetic Humeral Shaft Fracture Caused By Stretching Exercises After Shoulder Hemiarthroplasty: A Casereport, Han-Jay Chiu, Yung-Ching Lin, Zong-Jing Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Periprosthetic humeral fractures constituted only 2 % of all the complications during or after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty or total shoulder arthroplasty. Most of the fractures occurred intraoperatively. Postoperative fractures were caused by falls or traffic accidents. To our knowledge, they have never been caused by stretching exercises after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty. We present a 57-year-old female patient who had a periprosthetic humeral shaft spiral fracture caused by stretching exercises after a shoulder hemiarthroplasty because of proximal humeral fracture. The fracture was close reduced and fixed with a sugar-tong splint. Three months later, the fracture successfully healed with good alignment. Possible …
