The Expression Of P53, C-Erbb-2 And C-Yes In Canine Skin Tumors, Anudep Rungsipipat, Susumu Tateyama, Yuichi Murakami, Kazuyuki Uchida

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The exact role of the p53 tumor suppressor gene, c-erbB-2 and c-yes oncogenes in the development of canine skin tumors is still debatable. To elucidate the involvement of these oncogenes in canine skin carcinogenesis, we examined the expression of the protein in 60 skin tumor samples using avidin-biotin complex immunohistochemistry, with polyclonal antibodies directed against each protein, on formalinfixed, paraffin-embedded sections. Positive nuclear staining for p53 protein was observed in 12/60 cases (20%) which included, 6/15(40%) squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and 4/8(50%) perianal gland tumors (PGT). Out of all the tumors examined, mixed membrane/ cytoplasmic staining of c-erbB-2 protein was …

Acoustic Mechanisms That Determine The Ear-Canal Sound Pressures Generated By Earphones, Susan E. Voss, John J. Rosowski, Christopher A. Shera, William T. Peake Mar 2000

Acoustic Mechanisms That Determine The Ear-Canal Sound Pressures Generated By Earphones, Susan E. Voss, John J. Rosowski, Christopher A. Shera, William T. Peake

Engineering: Faculty Publications

In clinical measurements of hearing sensitivity, a given earphone is assumed to produce essentially the same sound-pressure level in all ears. However, recent measurements [Voss et al., Ear and Hearing (in press)] show that with some middle-ear pathologies, ear-canal sound pressures can deviate by as much as 35 dB from the normal-ear value; the deviations depend on the earphone, the middle-ear pathology, and frequency. These pressure variations cause errors in the results of hearing tests. Models developed here identify acoustic mechanisms that cause pressure variations in certain pathological conditions. The models combine measurement-based Thevenin equivalents for insert and supra-aural earphones …

Patterns Of Time Use Of People Age 55 To 64 Years Old: Some Cross-National Comparisons, Anne H. Gauthier, Timothy M. Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

Objectives. This paper examines the patterns of time use of adults age 55 to 64 years old in six countries: Austria, Canada, Finland, Italy, Sweden, and the United States. It examines the discontinuity in daily activities by employment status and gender. Methods. The paper uses nationally representative samples from time use surveys carried out in each country. We compute aggregate patterns of time use by employment status and gender for seven categories of activities: personal activities, paid work, unpaid work, housework, social leisure, active leisure, and passive leisure. We also compute dissimilarity indices to measure the degree of discontinuity in …

Strategies To Promote Advanced Telecommunications Capabilities, Bob Rowe Mar 2000

Strategies To Promote Advanced Telecommunications Capabilities, Bob Rowe

Federal Communications Law Journal

Section 706 instructs both the FCC and state public utility commissions to promote deployment of advanced telecommunications capabilities. Much policy discussion of broadband access to date has focused on rearguing preexisting telecommunications policy debates, and has not produced significant incremental deployment of ATCs. ATC issues are much more diverse and specific than is commonly assumed, potentially requiring a menu of strategies to resolve. The "cooperative federalist" structure of the Telecommunications Act provides important context and guidance for implementing section 706. A Federal-State Joint Conference or task force would be a cooperative federalist vehicle for identifying ATC issues, developing strategies to …

The Game Of Radiopoly: An Antitrust Perspective Of Consolidation In The Radio Industry, Sarah Elizabeth Leeper Mar 2000

The Game Of Radiopoly: An Antitrust Perspective Of Consolidation In The Radio Industry, Sarah Elizabeth Leeper

Federal Communications Law Journal

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 eliminated nationwide radio ownership restrictions and liberalized local ownership caps. As a result of this deregulation, the radio industry has experienced mass consolidation. Faced with an unprecedented number of proposed mergers, the federal antitrust enforcement agencies play an increasingly important role in the outcome of media mergers. The Horizontal Merger Guidelines, the primary vehicle of antitrust enforcement, address primarily economic factors to prevent anticompetitive mergers. Despite the healthy revenues generated through economies of scope and scale, it is questionable whether a sufficient regulatory mechanism exists to ensure diversity of voices. Although it is still too …

Embracing Civic Responsibility, Judith Ramaley

Higher Education

In the past year, there have been several calls for colleges and universities to take up their responsibilities as members of society in order to model the civic virtues and to become instruments of a working democracy. It is becoming clear that a genuine democracy is also a learning society and that good citizenship requires the capacity to form a learning community with others.

Courts Juvenile Proceedings, Parental Rights: Provide That A Physician May Retain Temporary Protective Custody Of A Child Without A Court Order And Without Parental Consent In Certain Situations; Provide A Short Title; Provide For Procedures; Provide For Authority And Duties Of The Department Of Human Resources; Provide For Immunity From Liability, Brooke Voelzke

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act, known as the Terrell Peterson Act, adds two sections to the Georgia Code. These sections allow a physician to retain temporary protective custody of a child without a court order or parental consent if the physician has reasonable cause to believe the child's life or health is in imminent danger as a result of suspected abuse or neglect.
