Publications

Differences in salinity tolerance and osmoregulatory performance between sunshine bass (white bass Morone chrysops ♀ × striped bass M. saxatilis ♂) and palmetto bass (striped bass ♀ × white bass ♂) were evaluated by using direct-transfer toxicity testing and monitoring of plasma osmolality during salinity elevation. The 24-h LC50 (concentration lethal for 50% of test animals) for sunshine bass was a salinity of 27.9‰ with a 95% lower and upper confidence interval (CI) of 24.5‰ to 36.2‰. The 24-h LC50 for palmetto bass was 28.0‰ with a 95% CI of 26.2‰ to 30.8‰. Test temperatures during this interval ranged from …

Interpreting The Copyright Act’S Section 201(C) Revision Privilege With Respect To Electronic Media, Robert Meitus May 2000

Interpreting The Copyright Act’S Section 201(C) Revision Privilege With Respect To Electronic Media, Robert Meitus

Federal Communications Law Journal

New electronic media-including CD-ROMs and online services such as LEXIS/NEXIS-offer new outlets to which traditional publishers can disseminate the content of their publications. Recently, in Tasini v. New York Times, freelance authors claimed that the publishing industry allegedly infringed their copyrights in the underlying works of authorship. In absence of express agreements to the contrary, the authors maintained that section 201(c) of the Copyright Act gives the publishers only the limited privilege of publishing an article as part of a "particular collective work, any revision of that collective work, and any later collective work in the same series" and that …

Tracing Medical Information Over The Internet, Sajed M. Mutairi

Saudi Medical Journal

The Internet became with do doubt a huge and valuable source of information for researchers. The wealth of information on the Internet is second to none and medical information is no exception. Yet with the vast expansion of the Internet and the World Wide Web in specie, to find the kind of information one is looking for, he/she needs to browse thousands of web sites and the experience would be like digging into a stack of hay looking for a needle. That9s why search engines and subject indexes, as means to overcome this problem, were introduced and grew so rapidly. …

The Availability Of The Fair Use Defense In Music Piracy And Internet Technology, Sonia Das May 2000

The Availability Of The Fair Use Defense In Music Piracy And Internet Technology, Sonia Das

Federal Communications Law Journal

This Note examines the development of the fair-use defense to other new technologies, such as the VCR and photocopier, and concludes that courts generally make the fair-use defense available in cases involving copying using new technology. Such uses of the technology have contributed, rather than deterred, to both the bettering of the technology itself and increasing the use of a copyright work. Ultimately, the increased uses reward the copyright holder. Next, this Note applies fair-use cases to new technology in the music industry, namely the increase availability of music on the Internet and a device known as the Rio, which …

A Leap Forward: Why States Should Ratify The Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, David A.P. Neboyskey May 2000

A Leap Forward: Why States Should Ratify The Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, David A.P. Neboyskey

Federal Communications Law Journal

The Uniform Computer Information Transaction Act (UCITA) has been presented to the states for their ratification. Patterned after the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), UCITA began as an addition to the UCC, but differences between the statutes required UCITA to emerge as a separate entity. The National Conference of Commissioners of Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) drafted UCITA and approved the Act in Summer 1999. The Act now awaits approval by state legislatures. This Comment analyzes UCITA and argues that the states should ratify the Act. The Comment favorably compares the UCC and UCITA. The UCC follows the principle of "freedom of …

International Labor Policies And The North American Free Trade Agreement: Are Women Getting Their Fair Share?, Gregory A. Kelson May 2000

International Labor Policies And The North American Free Trade Agreement: Are Women Getting Their Fair Share?, Gregory A. Kelson

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the Introduction:

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has always been a document of controversy. On the surface, NAFTA opened trade among its three primary parties -- Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Realistically, however, it has been a cause for tension -- mainly between the governments of the United States and Mexico. The two countries have used NAFTA and its labor side agreement, the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC), to dictate its economic and labor policies in each other’s countries.

This article will argue that more must be done to protect the rights of female …

Foreword: The Question Of Process, J. Harvie Wilkinson Iii May 2000

Foreword: The Question Of Process, J. Harvie Wilkinson Iii

Michigan Law Review

Many in the legal profession have abandoned the great questions of legal process. This is too bad. How a decision is reached can be as important as what the decision is. In an increasingly diverse country with many competing visions of the good, it is critical for law to aspire to agreement on process - a task both more achievable than agreement on substance and more suited to our profession than waving the banners of ideological truth. By process, I mean the institutional routes by which we in America reach our most crucial decisions. In other words, process is our …

Atmospheric Organochlorine Pesticides In The Western Canadian Arctic: Evidence Of Transpacific Transport, R. Bailey, L. A. Barrie, C. J. Halsall, P. Fellin, D. C. G. Muir May 2000

Atmospheric Organochlorine Pesticides In The Western Canadian Arctic: Evidence Of Transpacific Transport, R. Bailey, L. A. Barrie, C. J. Halsall, P. Fellin, D. C. G. Muir

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), chlordane, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) were measured in ambient air samples on a weekly basis between December 1992 and January 1995 at Tagish Yukon, Canada. In winter, unusually high air concentrations of HCHs, DDT, and chlordanes at Tagish were predominantly influenced by transpacific long-range atmospheric transport from eastern Asia that generally occurred within 5 days. HCH and heptachlor epoxide concentrations were correlated with the time that air spent over eastern Asia prior to arrival at Tagish. Chlordane and DDT, which also increase with transpacific transport, do not show a correlation with the time the upwind airshed included …

Effects Of Caffeine And Lateralized Emotional Distractors On Vigilance Performance, Tara L. Worley May 2000

Effects Of Caffeine And Lateralized Emotional Distractors On Vigilance Performance, Tara L. Worley

Honors Theses

Caffeine is the most popular psychotropic drug (Smith & Tola, 1998) and is known to be used for its stimulating effects (Benowitz, 1990) as well as its enhancing effects on sustained attention (Smith, 1994, & Rusted, 1994). Effects of caffeine on attention and performance tasks have been studied quite extensively. Results have varied, but caffeine has generally been found to enhance attention and improve performance. An aspect yet to be studied is the effects of caffeine on vigilance performance given emotionally distracting stimuli. The focus of this paper is on the effects of caffeine on vigilance performance as well as …

Powell V. State: The Demise Of Georgia's Consensual Sodomy Statute, Gregory K. Smith May 2000

Powell V. State: The Demise Of Georgia's Consensual Sodomy Statute, Gregory K. Smith

Mercer Law Review

In Powell v. State, the Supreme Court of Georgia held that section 16-6-2 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A."), which criminalizes sodomy, violates the right to privacy guaranteed by the Georgia Constitution. The court found that the right to engage in private, unforced, consensual, noncommercial sexual acts is included within the meaning of the Due Process Clause of the Georgia Constitution.

Decision Support Methods In Diabetic Patient Management By Insulin Administration Neural Network Vs. Induction Methods For Knowledge Classification, B. V. Ambrosiadou, S. Vadera, Venky Shankaraman, D. Goulis, G. Gogou May 2000

Decision Support Methods In Diabetic Patient Management By Insulin Administration Neural Network Vs. Induction Methods For Knowledge Classification, B. V. Ambrosiadou, S. Vadera, Venky Shankaraman, D. Goulis, G. Gogou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Diabetes mellitus is now recognised as a major worldwide public health problem. At present, about 100 million people are registered as diabetic patients. Many clinical, social and economic problems occur as a consequence of insulin-dependent diabetes. Treatment attempts to prevent or delay complications by applying ‘optimal’ glycaemic control. Therefore, there is a continuous need for effective monitoring of the patient. Given the popularity of decision tree learning algorithms as well as neural networks for knowledge classification which is further used for decision support, this paper examines their relative merits by applying one algorithm from each family on a medical problem; …

Use Of The Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms Rating Scale With Preschool Children, Penny Ladee Phillips May 2000

Use Of The Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms Rating Scale With Preschool Children, Penny Ladee Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common disorder among children and is usually diagnosed during the school years, although symptoms must be present before age 7. As more children enter into preschool programs, there is great opportunity for early identification and treatment of behaviors related to ADHD. The earlier children with symptoms of ADHD are treated, the better their chances of having successful school experiences. Unfortunately, diagnosing ADHD during early childhood is difficult, in part because there is a lack of adequate assessment instruments designed for this age group. The instruments that are available generally do not focus specifically on …

Associations Of Civic Attitudes In Service Learning, Christina M. Roemer

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Civic responsibility is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation. Students enrolled at institutions of higher education have the opportunity to transform their social interests into advocacy through personal connections with the community. Service learning is an effective method of increasing citizenship participation and civic responsibility by incorporating community service activities with academic coursework.

This study used survey research to examine the civic attitude scores of service learning students at a large, public, mid-Atlantic state university. The research questions attained information on the associations among students who perform written and discussion reflection activities (outside of …

Anthropology And The Doctrine Of Sin In The Theology Of Reinhold Niebuhr, Hiroyuki Kanamori

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Understanding the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr is a great challenge, because all components of his theology are intricately interrelated with each other. It is therefore not proper to describe only his anthropology and doctrine of sin, the primary focus of this study, without also mentioning other matters related to it.

Biography Of James Jarvis Chandler, Paul S. Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is a general biography of a Mormon pioneer who, although not among the most renowned church officials, played a pivotal role in building Zion as teacher, missionary, leader, politician, husband, and father. After his conversion as a boy in England to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he and his family emigrated to America and settled in Willard, Utah. With a keen mind and a zeal for learning, Chandler pursued an education to prepare him for future employment as a school teacher. Although pupils throughout northern Utah and southern Idaho profited from his teaching proficiency and …
