At The Intersection Of Visible And Invisable Worlds: United States Privacy Law And The Internet, Dorothy J. Glancy

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this essay is to consider some characteristics ofUnited States privacy law that contribute to the obscurity of many intersections between the Internet and privacy law. This discussion is not an exhaustive catalogue of all of the ways in which United States privacy law may apply to Internet activities. Nor is it intended to be
an evaluation of the effectiveness of this privacy law. Rather, the point here is to explore why the application of privacy law to the Internet is a matter of considerable complexity and some uncertainty.
The focus is on certain characteristics of privacy law …

Regulation Of Acetylated Low Density Lipoprotein Uptake In Macrophages By Pertussis Toxin-Sensitive G Proteins, Stewart C. Whitman, Alan Daugherty, Steven R. Post May 2000

Regulation Of Acetylated Low Density Lipoprotein Uptake In Macrophages By Pertussis Toxin-Sensitive G Proteins, Stewart C. Whitman, Alan Daugherty, Steven R. Post

Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Faculty Publications

Class A scavenger receptors (SR-A) mediate the uptake of modified low density lipoprotein (LDL) by macrophages. Although not typically associated with the activation of intracellular signaling cascades, results with peritoneal macrophages indicate that the SR-A ligand acetylated LDL (AcLDL) promotes activation of cytosolic kinases and phospholipases. These signaling responses were blocked by the treatment of cells with pertussis toxin (PTX) indicating that SR-A activates Gi/o-linked signaling pathways. The functional significance of SR-A-mediated Gi/o activation is not clear. In this study, we investigated the potential role of Gi/o activation in regulating SR-A-mediated lipoprotein uptake. Treatment of mouse …

"Going To Indian Territory": Attitudes Toward Native Americans In Little House On The Prairie, Philip Heldrich

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Since its first printing in 1935, Little House on the Prairie has been a perennial favorite among countless readers. The Little House series itself ranks consistently as one of the most commercially popular of all times. However, Little House on the Prairie, the second book in the series, has become the center of numerous controversies. Yellow Medicine East School District, in Granite, Minnesota, which serves a portion of the Upper Sioux Community of that region, stopped class reading of the book, citing disgust with the text's portrayals of Native Americans. Such action follows a similar banning of the text …

the use of personal computers. I also recall being required, as part of a first-year course at Dartmouth, to write a simple computer program. That was 1967-1968, and it was my first contact with the world of computers.

My second memorable contact (albeit indirect) came in 1985. That was the year I began my employment at Morality in Media ("MIM") as a staff attorney. It was also the year a bill was introduced in the United States Senate to prohibit the use of computers to transmit obscene material and child pornography. MIM supported that bill, but it would be three …

Personal Jurisdiction And The Internet: Waiting For The Other Shoe To Drop On First Amendment Concerns, Brian E. Daughdrill May 2000

Personal Jurisdiction And The Internet: Waiting For The Other Shoe To Drop On First Amendment Concerns, Brian E. Daughdrill

Mercer Law Review

Believing that First Amendment concerns already receive sufficient protection from any "chilling effect," the Supreme Court has held that personal jurisdiction analysis should not contain additional levels of scrutiny in speech-oriented cases. Reasoning that the "actual malice" requirement for public figures enunciated in New York Times, Inc. v. Sullivan was sufficient protection, the Court has been content to analyze personal jurisdiction over nonresident defendants within the established but "imprecise inquiry," even when the defendant's speech or expression may be penalized by a claim for damages.

Enter Internet-based contacts. Courts attempting to impose traditional personal jurisdiction analysis on Internet-related contacts have …
