Is Mother Loss Curriculum Effective In Promoting A Healthy Grieving Process?, Patricia A. Hill May 2000

Is Mother Loss Curriculum Effective In Promoting A Healthy Grieving Process?, Patricia A. Hill

Theses and Graduate Projects

The death of a mother for a daughter carries certain effects that are different than those experienced with the death of a father or another loved one. This practice evaluation was initiated to study the effectiveness of the curriculum in promoting a healthy grieving process. Current literature is minimal in regards to the impact of mother loss on adult daughters as well as methods in which to assist adult daughters through the grief process. The research design and method included a grief/depression self test which was administered as a pre/post-test and eight weekly evaluations. Both were quantitative although the evaluations …

A Hermeneutic Experience Of Social Workers With Dying Prisoners, Ted R. Page May 2000

A Hermeneutic Experience Of Social Workers With Dying Prisoners, Ted R. Page

Theses and Graduate Projects

This hermeneutic qualitative study sought to discover the effectiveness of social work practice with dying male prisoners. An in depth interview was conducted of two male social workers who have worked with dying male prisoners. Hermeneutics is an interpretative approach to understanding the world around us through the narratives of the participant, in this study the social worker's narrative. This study attempted to catch a glimpse into the world of social workers as they practice their craft with dying prisoners. One social worker went into the prison to serve the dying prisoner, the other social worker helped early released dying …

Female Adolescent Offender's Experience With Restorative Justice Practice, Leslie Ann Houghtaling May 2000

Female Adolescent Offender's Experience With Restorative Justice Practice, Leslie Ann Houghtaling

Theses and Graduate Projects

This hermeneutic study examines the lived experience of one female juvenile offender as she went through the restorative justice practice of either victim-offender mediation (VOM) or group conferencing. Hermeneutics is an interpretive approach to looking at everyday experiences and uncovering what is usually hidden from us. When asked about her experience, one theme stood out as essential for the participant: becoming trustworthy. Several aspects including being listened to, re-developing relationships, and making amends with those who were harmed by the crime marked the participant's transformation. These findings correspond with Erikson's psychosocial stages of adolescence and young adulthood, as well as …

A Study Examining The Importance Of Early Intervention On Premature Development, Suzanne F. Appleby

Theses and Dissertations

Every year, thousands of babies are born prematurely or at low birth weight. As a result, many of these children are confronted with health and developmental issues. The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of early intervention on premature development. It was hypothesized that premature children, who were initially denied early intervention services, would eventually be in need of services at a later time, and these children would be in need more than full-term children. The present study consisted of a sample of fifty-four children: twenty-seven pre-term and twenty-seven full-term. The subjects were collected from the Child …

A Comparison Of Burnout Rates Between Inpatient And Outpatient Social Workers Who Serve Mentally Ill Adults, Heather N. Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to ascertain differences in burnout rates of social workers serving mentally ill adults who are employed in one of two different types of service, inpatient and outpatient. Burnout rates were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey. This 22-item survey contains three subscales measuring: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment.

Data was collected from 19 inpatient and 28 outpatient social workers from four different agencies in southern New Jersey. One large state psychiatric institution was used to derive the inpatient social worker group and three private non-profit agencies were …

A Comparison Of Academic Growth In Emotionally Disturbed Students In Private Vs. Public School Settings, Thomas J. Diaz

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to measure the academic growth, in the areas of reading and math ability, between students who are classified emotionally disturbed and placed by the school district in private, out of district schools with similarly classified students who remain in district programs. Other indicators of academic success, such as attendance and frequency of suspension were also compared, statistically, between the two groups. Yet other factors, such as grade retention, counseling and student investment were compared loosely. Sixty high school students, (thirty from each setting) comprise the two groups. Previous academic testing from the 1997/98 school year was …

Direct Nitric Oxide Signal Transduction Via Nitrosylation Of Iron-Sulfur Centers In The Soxr Transcription Activator, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple May 2000

Direct Nitric Oxide Signal Transduction Via Nitrosylation Of Iron-Sulfur Centers In The Soxr Transcription Activator, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple

Faculty Publications

Nitric oxide (NO) has diverse roles in intercellular communication and (at higher levels) in immune-mediated cell killing. NO reacts with many cellular targets, with cell-killing effects correlated to inactivation of key enzymes through nitrosylation of their iron-sulfur centers. SoxR protein, a redox-sensitive transcription activator dependent on the oxidation state of its binuclear iron-sulfur ([2Fe-2S]) centers, is also activated in Escherichia coli on exposure to macrophage-generated NO. We show here that SoxR activation by NO occurs through direct modification of the [2Fe-2S] centers to form protein-bound dinitrosyl-iron-dithiol adducts, which we have observed both in intact bacterial cells and in purified SoxR …
