Chemical Treatment Of Sex Offenders, Cherylinn Gunning
Chemical Treatment Of Sex Offenders, Cherylinn Gunning
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
Recently, several states have passed legislation allowing or directing state officials to impose treatment, sometimes referred to as chemical castration, on particular classes of sex offenders. Several other states have attempted to pass similar legislation. Such legislation raises multiple intricate issues including the efficacy of the treatment, the responsibilities of medical professionals implementing the provisions of the statutes, and the constitutionality of the statutes. This comment addresses several of the legal and ethical issues surrounding state legislation that requires chemical treatment of sex offenders as a condition of their release from incarceration. The first section will set out basic information …
Transforming The Armed Forces Of Central And East Europe, Jeffrey Simon
Transforming The Armed Forces Of Central And East Europe, Jeffrey Simon
Strategic Forums
This Strategic Forum looks at the ongoing effort to reshape post-Cold War militaries in the region into effective contributors to Euro-Atlantic security. The paper highlights how early optimism about integration with Western institutions gave way to more difficult, long-term challenges, including limited resources, incomplete reform plans, and institutional friction. It also explores key issues such as downsizing forces, restructuring defense institutions, and strengthening civilian control of the military. The transition to professional forces and the integration of defense ministries also present political and social challenges that complicate reform efforts. This paper also emphasizes that while progress has been made, sustained …

The Culture Of Using Animals In Literature And The Case Of José Emilio Pacheco, Randy Malamud
The Culture Of Using Animals In Literature And The Case Of José Emilio Pacheco, Randy Malamud
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "The Culture of Using Animals in Literature and the Case of José Emilio Pacheco," Randy Malamud argues that the animal poetry of Mexican writer José Emilio Pacheco, compiled in his 1985 collection Album de zoología (trans. 1993 by Margaret Sayers Peden as An Ark for the Next Millennium) embodies a vast literary account of a range of animals. This book represents one of the most extensive treatments of animals by any modern poet, and one of the most sensitive and ambitious attempts to craft a discourse that facilitates an approach to animals on their own terms -- …

Artificial Breeding Of Large Ruminant Production : Based On Experiences In Thailand, Maneewan Kamonpatana
Artificial Breeding Of Large Ruminant Production : Based On Experiences In Thailand, Maneewan Kamonpatana
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The author has been much concentrating on biological regulation for enhancing fertility and growth with co-incidentally better health care. The three aspects of achievement of fertility, growth and health within one injection may be called “Three in One that is Mato-Matid technology”. However, Mato-Matid technology did provide a great deal of prime biological responses positively to several reproductive technologies in which some of them may be regarded as artificial breeding like IVM/IVF/IVC/ET/Cloning.

Pathological Changes And Faecal Excretion Levels Seen In Broiler Chicks After A Single Oral Dose Of Aflatoxin B1, Kanarat Harintharanon, Achariya Sailasuta, Anudep Rungsipipat, Anong Bintvihok, Jiroj Sasipreyajan
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Three hundred Shaver starbo, broiler, 5-day-old chicks were divided into 3 groups and given in group 1 sterile water, group 2 olive oil and group 3 aflatoxin B1. The effect of aflatoxin B1(5mg/kg) after the single oral dose was studied, observing clinical signs, blood chemistry, pathology, and excretion levels in faeces over a period of 10 days. Chicks in group 3 showed depression and decreased feed intake. Blood chemistry, especially blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was significantly different between the three groups although still in the normal range. Gross pathology revealed petechial hemorrhages developing on day 2 (87.5 %) and pale …

The Histological Structure Of Testicular And Male Genital Ducts In Siamese Crocodiles (Crocodylus Siamensis), Suppaluk Roomratanapun, Somphop Navephap, Natanun Makmee
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Five sets of testes and male genital ducts of Siamese crocodiles, aged 3-4 years were collected and processed by the histologic technique. The tissues were cut 5 micrometres thick and stained with H&E, PAS and Masson’s trichrome methods. The sections were observed under a light microscopic. The testes were surrounded by fibrous connective tissue, with the tunica albuginea and their septum separating the organs into lobules. The testes consisted of packed seminiferous tubules ; the lumen of tubules consisted of various stages of spermatogenic and Sertoli cells. The latter were irregularly shaped with ovoidal or pyramidal nuclei and a prominent …

A Story For All Americans: Vietnam, Victims, And Veterans, Frank L. Grzyb, John F. Kerry
A Story For All Americans: Vietnam, Victims, And Veterans, Frank L. Grzyb, John F. Kerry
Purdue University Press Books
Story for All Americans: Vietnam, Victims, and Veterans (formerly titled, Touched by the Dragon) details wartime accounts of average servicemen and women-some heroic, some frightening, some amusing, some nearly unbelievable. The work is a historical compendium of fascinating and compelling stories woven together in a theme format. What makes this book truly unique, however, is its absence of literary pretentiousness. Relating oral accounts, the veterans speak in a no-nonsense, matter-of-fact way. As seen through the eyes of the veterans, the stories include first-person experiences of infantry soldiers, a flight officer, a medic, a nurse, a combat engineer, an intelligence soldier, …

A Comparative Analysis Of Walking Patterns Between Genu Varum And Normal Subjects, Nerline Varda Maurisseau
Masters Theses
The problem was to compare angular and linear kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRF), temporal changes, and electromyography (EMG) of selected muscles while walking one gait cycle to a metronome set at 100 beats per minute (bpm) between genu varum and normal men, ages 20-25 years. Results indicated: (a) the Normal Group had a lower stride time than the Genu Varum Group, although the results were not significantly different; (b) the Normal Group showed greater range of motion in the ankle, knee, hip rotation, and tibial rotation angles-however, the results were not significantly different; (c) there was no significant difference in …

U.S. Military Engagement With Transcaucasia And Central Asia, Stephen J. Blank Dr.
U.S. Military Engagement With Transcaucasia And Central Asia, Stephen J. Blank Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The Clinton administration has proclaimed a strategy to engage and enlarge the democratic community of states. By virtue of their strategic location adjacent to Russia, the Middle East, and Europe s periphery, and their large-scale oil and natural gas deposits, Transcaucasia and Central Asia have become important testing grounds of this strategy. The U.S. goal of irrevocably integrating these states into the Western state system economically, politically, and militarily has made them an intensifying focus of international rivalry with Russia. Moscow still perceives these areas as part of its sphere of interest and deeply resents U.S. engagement there. Furthermore, Moscow's …

Fermentation Of Fructooligosaccharides By Lactic Acid Bacteria And Bifidobacteria, Handan Kaplan, Robert W. Hutkins
Fermentation Of Fructooligosaccharides By Lactic Acid Bacteria And Bifidobacteria, Handan Kaplan, Robert W. Hutkins
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria were screened of their ability to ferment fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on MRS agar. Of 28 strains of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria examined, 12 of 16 Lactobacillus strains and 7 of 8 Bifidobacterium strains fermented FOS. Only strains that gave a positive reaction by the agar method reached high cell densities in broth containing FOS.
