Factors Associated With The Quality Of Life Of Persons With Spinal Cord Injuries – A Focus Group Study, Yuh Jang, Yen-Ho Wang, Cheng-Fen Yu, Chi-Wen Chung, Jung-Der Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The primary purpose of this qualitative study was designed to identify, from a client and medical personnel perspective, factors that associated with the quality of life of patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Three focus groups were recruited and conducted: newly injured patients, patients with a chronic SCI, and medical personnel who worked with these patients. Responses were audio taped, transcribed, and analyzed by pattern coding according to domains and facets of Taiwan version of WHOQOL-BREF. The results indicated that the meaning of quality of life is a subjective perception of their position in life that is influenced by physical …

Intractable Hiccups Following Ischemic Stroke Of Brain Stem : A Casereport, Ya-Wei Cheng, Lu Lu Jun 2000

Intractable Hiccups Following Ischemic Stroke Of Brain Stem : A Casereport, Ya-Wei Cheng, Lu Lu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hiccups are a common phenomenon though their mechanism and physiological meaning are still controversial. No special treatment is necessary for most patients with hiccup. However, the hiccup might last for more than one month in rare cases, defined as an intractable hiccup, as one of the clini-cal manifestations of respiratory, gastrointestinal or neurological diseases.A case with an ischemic brain stem stroke is investigated herein. The intractable hiccup disturbed the patient’s appetite, impaired his nutritional and dehydration status, and even delayed rehabilitation. Prochlorperazine maleate (Novamin) was administered and provided with much significant relief, which is the first successful experience in the …

Congenital Corpus Callosum Agenesis : A Casereport And Literature Review, Huey-Jen Lai, Hsi-Hsun Su, Shaw-Nan Jean, Ming-Fen Chang Chien, Horng-Feng Shyn Jun 2000

Congenital Corpus Callosum Agenesis : A Casereport And Literature Review, Huey-Jen Lai, Hsi-Hsun Su, Shaw-Nan Jean, Ming-Fen Chang Chien, Horng-Feng Shyn

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The main function of corpus callosum is to connect bilateral hemispheres. Patients with mech-anical injuries to corpus callosum, e,g., tumor compression, anterior or posterior cerebral artery infarction may have in neurological defects including left apraxia, left alexia or anomia to colors. Nevertheless, these symptoms may not occur in congenital corpus callosum agenesis, complete or incomplete. Congenital corpus callosum agenesis frequently coexists with other deficits, such as mental retardation, spastic quadriplegia or spastic diplegia, and seizure. We report a case with corpus callosum agenesis, spastic right hemiplegia, mild bilateral eyelid ptosis and hyperoptic astigmatism. Literatures were reviewed. In early development of …

A Brain Stem Teratoma Manifested By Silent Aspiration Pneumonia : A Casereport, Hui-Chiu Lin, Yao-Chia Chuang, Wang-Lin Su, Yen-Ta Lu, Fu-Chao Huang, Yuen-Liang Lai Jun 2000

A Brain Stem Teratoma Manifested By Silent Aspiration Pneumonia : A Casereport, Hui-Chiu Lin, Yao-Chia Chuang, Wang-Lin Su, Yen-Ta Lu, Fu-Chao Huang, Yuen-Liang Lai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Brain stem tumors are relatively rare but predominantly diseases of childhood. Most of them are astrocytomas or ependymomas histologically. Intracranial teratomas arise in the midline, most comm-only in the pineal and suprasellar regions. Only one documented paper illustrated a teratoma arising in the brain stem. Patients with a brain stem tumor may present different symptoms and signs, such as facial nerve palsy, hemiparesis and unilateral hearing loss when involving the pons; and anorexia, dysphagia, upper respiratory tract infections, vomiting, hoarseness, ataxia and hemiparesis or quadriparesis when involving the medulla oblongata. This case was a 22- year-old female patient who suffered from …

Characteristics Of Crimes Against Juveniles, David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod

Crimes Against Children Research Center

Until recently, it has been difficult to obtain a national statistical picture of juvenile crime victimization. The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system, which has served as the Nation’s primary source of information about crime since 1929, has never collected information or reported crimes by age of victim, with the exception of homicides. The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), the victim self-report survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics for the past 20 years, has collected data only on crimes occurring to persons 12 …

Rhinovirus-Induced Oxidative Stress And Interleukin-8 Elaboration Involves P47-Phox But Is Independent Of Attachment To Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 And Viral Replication, Poonam Kaul, Matthew C. Biagioli, Inderjit Singh, Ronald B. Turner Jun 2000

Rhinovirus-Induced Oxidative Stress And Interleukin-8 Elaboration Involves P47-Phox But Is Independent Of Attachment To Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 And Viral Replication, Poonam Kaul, Matthew C. Biagioli, Inderjit Singh, Ronald B. Turner

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Virus-induced elaboration of proinflammatory cytokines is mediated by virus-induced oxidative stress. The purpose of these studies was to determine the source of the virus-induced oxidative stress. Inhibition of viral replication with antibody to intercellular adhesion molecule-1 had no effect on virus-induced oxidative stress or interleukin-8 (IL-8) response (597±88 vs. 668±78 pg/mL in control cells). Treatment of cells with diphenylene iodonium inhibited virus-induced oxidative stress and IL-8 elaboration, but allopurinol, ibuprofen, and rotenone had no effect. Studies in cell lines produced from a patient with gp91-phox deficiency revealed normal responses. In contrast, the oxidative response was decreased and the IL-8 concentration …

How To Achieve Public Participation In Nuclear Waste Decisions: Public Relations Or Transparent Adversary Science, Judy Treichel Jun 2000

How To Achieve Public Participation In Nuclear Waste Decisions: Public Relations Or Transparent Adversary Science, Judy Treichel

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "Commercial nuclear reactors in the United States have been producing electricity and highly radioactive wastes for more than forty years. Originally, reluctant utilities built reactors at the urging of Congress, acting in accordance with the Atomic Energy Act. The Act called for promotion of nuclear technology and also provided a shield of secrecy allowing for extensive power to classify information. Wiretapping and other surveillance techniques were allowable if nuclear secrets or interference with nuclear programs were involved. During this time the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) provided films and comic books, and gave speeches in a public relations campaign designed …

Perceived Control, Voluntariness And Emotional Reactions In Relocated Areas Of Russia, Ukraine And Belarus, Carol Jeniffer Figueiredo, Britt-Marie Drottz-Sjöberg

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "The Chernobyl accident occurred at a time of considerable social and economic changes in the former Soviet Union. The contamination due to the accident still covers parts of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Some areas were considered too contaminated to suit long-term human settlement and a considerable number of people were therefore moved from their homes and resettled in other areas. Resettlement policies often differed between the states. Some variations in state policy included the duration before implementation of the decision to resettle people from certain areas, the swiftness of the transition, and the acceptance of personal initiatives in the …

Varied Definitions Of Risk Related To Sensation Seeking Trait, Pål Ø.U. Dåstol, Britt-Marie Drottz-Sjöberg Jun 2000

Varied Definitions Of Risk Related To Sensation Seeking Trait, Pål Ø.U. Dåstol, Britt-Marie Drottz-Sjöberg

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "Risk judgments seem related to which definitions of risk a person uses. Earlier studies suggest that people who use a "probability" definition of risk give different, and somewhat lower, subjective estimates of risk than those who instead prefer a "consequence" definition. In addition, an "optimistic bias" often can be found, and subjects usually evaluate personal risk systematically lower than risk for people in general."

Early Beginnings In Outdoor Education, Julie A. Carlson Jun 2000

Early Beginnings In Outdoor Education, Julie A. Carlson

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The year 2000, then, marks the 70th anniversary of outdoor education, and represents an appropriate time to revisit some of its early beginnings in the United States. Outdoor education today has mixed and melded with other outdoor and experientially related approaches to learning. It is believed that knowledge of the historical roots of outdoor education, and identification of the paths it has taken to arrive where it is today, can help educators in broadening their understanding of relationships between various approaches to pedagogy.

Part Ii, Strategic Management For Mine Action Operations: A Case For Government- Industry Partnering, Alan Childress, Pete Owen

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Directed mainly at policy makers and leaders in mine-plagued nations and government and non-government mine action planners, the article argues for holistic mine action strategies, coordinated priorities and best management practices. The authors establish the need for nations to rake charge of their mine action organizations and present strategic management methodology to implement self-determination concepts. They insist that humanitarian demining must start with the end in mind, an integrated and nationally prioritized requirements analysis of each of the mine action areas: mine awareness, mine field assessment and surveys, mine and UXO clearance, victim assistance and information management. They also suggest …

Codebook: The Lsay 1995 Year 9 Sample Wave 5 (1999) Technical Paper No. 21, Nicole Fleming

LSAY Technical Reports

In 1995, a nationally representative sample of approximately 13,000 Year 9 students was selected to form the first cohort of the new Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth program. The sample was constructed by randomly selecting two Year 9 classes from a national sample of 300 schools designed to represent state and sector. Reading and numeracy tests were administered to students in their schools to provide information on early school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. Students also completed a background questionnaire about their educational and vocational plans and attitudes to school. In 1996 these …
