Rapid Sample Preparation Methods For Use With High -Speed Gas Chromatography., Robert Wesley Current Jun 2000

Rapid Sample Preparation Methods For Use With High -Speed Gas Chromatography., Robert Wesley Current

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid sample preparation schemes for analysis of high humidity gas and aqueous samples by high speed gas chromatography (HSGC) are described in this dissertation. Sample preparation methods are known to be a limiting factor in HSGC analysis. Most notably, cryointegrating HSGC instruments have been limited to the analysis of dry gas samples. This dissertation addresses known limitations, and provides methods for expanding the use of cryointegrating HSGC to high humidity gas samples, as well as samples in an aqueous matrix. Cryointegrating HSGC was used to monitor the efficiency and changes in activity of a biofiltration apparatus. This was done by …

Group Supervision: A Qualitative Examination., Pamela Rae Hilber Jun 2000

Group Supervision: A Qualitative Examination., Pamela Rae Hilber

Theses and Dissertations

Group supervision is a frequently used modality for training counselors. Past publications have described the advantages and disadvantages of group supervision and have constructed models to conduct group supervision. Yet very little is known regarding participants' experiences of group supervision. This study addressed the experience of group supervision for counselor trainees in the academic setting. Utilizing qualitative methodology, participants described their experiences and their perception of the link between participation in group supervision and service delivery to clients. Fourteen Master of Arts Counseling students at a Midwestern public university were interviewed about their experiences and observations of their supervisory group. …

The Effects Of Acute Alcohol Intoxication On The Cognitive Performance Of Adult Children Of Alcoholics And Controls., Stephanie Marie Fuller Jun 2000

The Effects Of Acute Alcohol Intoxication On The Cognitive Performance Of Adult Children Of Alcoholics And Controls., Stephanie Marie Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

A decreased sensitivity to the effects of alcohol has been consistently demonstrated in adult children of alcoholics (ACAs) and has been hypothesized as a predictor of future risk of alcoholism. The present study investigated whether family history of alcoholism would influence response to alcohol on a number of cognitive tasks. ACAs and controls were administered either a dose of alcohol in the form of 1.25 ml/kg body weight of absolute ethanol or placebo and subjected to the FAS test of word fluency, the Sternberg memory scanning task, a reaction time task, a test of prose memory, the WAIS-R Digit Span …

The Role Of Acetaldehyde In The Pathogenesis Of Alcoholic Heart Muscle Disease., Qiangrong Liang Jun 2000

The Role Of Acetaldehyde In The Pathogenesis Of Alcoholic Heart Muscle Disease., Qiangrong Liang

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol abuse is a major health problem in the United States with 14 million people affected. Long term alcohol abuse leads to alcoholic heart muscle disease (AHMD) in one third of alcoholics. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain alcohol's damaging effects on the heart but neither the mechanism nor the ultimate toxin has been established. The principal candidates for the specific toxin are alcohol, acetaldehyde and fatty acid ethyl esters. In order to test the hypothesis that acetaldehyde, the major oxidative metabolite of ethanol by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), is the specific toxin responsible for AHMD, seven lines of transgenic …

The Importance Of Family-Centered Professional Behaviors To Parents Of Children Receiving Day Treatment Services, Cindy A. Torborg Jun 2000

The Importance Of Family-Centered Professional Behaviors To Parents Of Children Receiving Day Treatment Services, Cindy A. Torborg

Theses and Graduate Projects

Although many agencies and professionals identify their services as family-centered very few have evaluated their practice to determine the legitimacy of this claim. This exploratory quantitative study elicited survey responses from a random sample of 75 parents and/or guardians of children with severe emotional disturbances who have received family services through Catholic Charities Day Programs. Parents and/or guardians used the Family-Centered Behavior Scale to evaluate the professional behaviors of the family service providers, and rate the importance of these behaviors in the service process. The results indicate that the level of satisfaction with the family practitioner directly correlates with the …

Borderline Personality Disorder: Effectiveness Of The Dbt Model, Lynn Braun Larson Jun 2000

Borderline Personality Disorder: Effectiveness Of The Dbt Model, Lynn Braun Larson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) has become increasingly prevalent in the mental health field (Linehan, 1993). Approximately 1-3% of the population is diagnosed with BPD (Linehan, Oldham, & Silk, 1995). Throughout the past decade, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has been utilized in the treatment of BPD. Six mental health practitioners were interviewed to determine the effectiveness of DBT with BPD. The research question addressed the ability of individuals with BPD to learn effective problem-solving skills in the areas relating to suicidal/self-mutilating behaviors, number of hospitalizations, interpersonal relationships, impulsiveness, and emotional instability. Some common themes discovered from the practitioners thoughts/perceptions about the …

The Complexity Of Planning With Partially-Observable Markov Decision Processes, Martin Mundhenk Jun 2000

The Complexity Of Planning With Partially-Observable Markov Decision Processes, Martin Mundhenk

Computer Science Technical Reports

This work surveys results on the complexity of planning under uncertainty. The planning model considered is the partially-observable Markov decision process. The general planning problems are, given such a process, (a) to calculate its performance under a given control policy, (b) to find an optimal or approximate optimal control policy, and (c) to decide whether a good policy exists. The complexity of this and related problems depend on a variety of factors, including the observability of the process state, the compactness of the process representation, the type of policy, or even the number of actions relative to the number of …

Understanding Volunteerism: An Exploratory Study Of The Theory Of The Commons, Richard L. Fey Jun 2000

Understanding Volunteerism: An Exploratory Study Of The Theory Of The Commons, Richard L. Fey

Dissertations and Theses

Volunteerism in the United States has a history dating back to this countries origin. This form of giving originated out of the Great Awakening in the early 17th century. Previous studies on the nature of volunteering have had many different disciplines of research attempting to explain why organizations and individuals spend time in civic service.

In 1992, Roger A. Lohmann wrote The Commons as an attempt to create a bridge between the varying theoretical perspectives on volunteerism. Lohmann suggested that the reason for so many different theoretical approaches is largely due to divisions along disciplinary lines, rather than a practical …
