Fatal Injuries Due To Logs Rolling Off Trucks At Sawmills, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Kentucky Haz Alerts--Tractors/Logging

Logging is one of the most hazardous occupations in the nation as well as Kentucky. During 1994-1998, 45 fatalities in Kentucky were related to logging. Of those deaths, 7 were due to logs rolling off trucks at sawmills. The workers were all males and aged 31-64 years. Their experience varied from less than 1 year to more than 25 years. Below are brief case reports of three fatal events, followed by recommendations for prevention of similar events.

The Omaha Gospel Complex In Historical Perspective, Tom Jack Jul 2000

The Omaha Gospel Complex In Historical Perspective, Tom Jack

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In this article, I document the introduction and development of gospel music within the African-American Christian community of Omaha, Nebraska. The 116 predominantly black congregations in Omaha represent twenty-five percent of the churches in a city where African-Americans comprise thirteen percent of the overall population.1 Within these institutions the gospel music genre has been and continues to be a dynamic reflection of African-American spiritual values and aesthetic sensibilities. By focusing the research on perceptions and descriptions provided by the music's practitioners, an examination of this genre at the local level will shed insight into the development and dissemination of …

Examining The Impact Of Control Systems On The Implementation Of Market -Oriented And Customer-Oriented Strategies, Tara Burnthorne Lopez Jul 2000

Examining The Impact Of Control Systems On The Implementation Of Market -Oriented And Customer-Oriented Strategies, Tara Burnthorne Lopez

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examined the notion that firm control systems for managers and salespeople might impact the degree to which market oriented and customer oriented strategies are implemented throughout a firm's activities. In other words, the firm's control systems might facilitate or mitigate the execution of these particular strategies. This dissertation empirically addressed this concern by examining the impact of the management control system on the level of firm market orientation, and the impact of the salesperson control system on both salesperson customer orientation and the level of firm market orientation. In addition, it replicated previous research by testing the relationship …

IN Re C (A CHILD) (HIV Test) [1999] 2 F.L.R. 1004, a local authority applied for a specific issue order to test a four-month-old baby girl for HIV. The mother of the child first tested positive for HIV in 1990, but adopted a highly sceptical stance towards generally accepted theories about HIV and AIDS, and refused conventional therapy for herself, preferring to rely on a healthy lifestyle as a prophylactic. The case arose when the baby's physician became aware not only that the mother was breastfeeding the child (despite the risk of transmission of HIV), but that the parents refused …

Swine Nutrition Guide, Duane E. Reese, Robert C. Thaler, Michael C. Brumm, Austin J. Lewis, Phillip S. Miller, George W. Libal

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

This publication is a revision of the previous swine nutrition publication prepared by the University of Nebraska and South Dakota State University. The focus of the publication continues to be on nutrient recommendations for swine. Specific factors (nutritional, environmental and managerial) that affect nutrient recommendations (Figure 1) have been considered and discussed. We believe that the identification and description of the factors in Figure 1 provide the framework for the nutrient recommendations presented in Tables 11 to 16. Industry advisors representing various facets of the pork industry were recruited to review and challenge the concepts incorporated in this publication. Also, …

Survey And Surveillance Development In Settings With Low Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevalence, D J. Nanan, M M. Kadir, F M. White Jul 2000

Survey And Surveillance Development In Settings With Low Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevalence, D J. Nanan, M M. Kadir, F M. White

Community Health Sciences

In most countries, during the early phases of a human immunodeficiency virus epidemic, independently initiated surveys of perceived high-risk groups tend to precede the development of formal surveillance systems. Unfortunately, in low-prevalence settings, small sample sizes produce unreliable estimates of prevalence and trends, with an inevitable tendency towards positive results. In our study, we present sample size calculations and typical samples used in actual surveys, with Pakistan as our example. More useful data on risk behaviour and potential for spread can be derived from the study of commoner sexually transmitted diseases and associated risk behaviours, including assessments of knowledge, attitudes, …
