Participation In A Support Group And Quality Of Life For The Caregiver Of The Patient With Alzheimer's Disease, Shirley Ffreeman Wade Jul 2000

Participation In A Support Group And Quality Of Life For The Caregiver Of The Patient With Alzheimer's Disease, Shirley Ffreeman Wade

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Alzheimer's disease presently affects four million people in this country. This disease not only affects the patient, but it also has a profound effect on the family. The caregiver could potentially spend two decades caring for the Alzheimer disease patient. Provision of this care can cause feelings of loneliness and despair for the caregiver. The caregiver should be encouraged to seek support from family and community programs to ease the burden of caregiving and to improve quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of support group participation on the quality of life for caregivers …

Estimating The Economic Value Of The Ocean In A National Income Accounting Framework, Charles S. Colgan Jul 2000

Estimating The Economic Value Of The Ocean In A National Income Accounting Framework, Charles S. Colgan

Publications

A key part of the effort to estimate the economic value of the ocean is to develop estimates of the appropriate values of the goods and services traded in the market economy. Such estimates should include the output of industries associated with the ocean, as well as other measures of economic activity, including income generated, employment, the number of firms, etc. Providing the information that permits seeing the economy of the ocean within the context of other economic activity requires preparing estimates that are consistent with the National Income and Product

Accounts (NIPA). The key component is Gross Product Originating …

Global Finance And The International Monetary Fund's Neoliberal Agenda: The Threat To The Employment, Ethnic Identity, And Cultural Pluralism Of Latina/O Communities, Timothy A. Canova Jul 2000

Global Finance And The International Monetary Fund's Neoliberal Agenda: The Threat To The Employment, Ethnic Identity, And Cultural Pluralism Of Latina/O Communities, Timothy A. Canova

Faculty Scholarship

This Article places recent Lat-Crit scholarship in an institutional and inter-disciplinary context. It serves not just as an indictment of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agenda of structural adjustment and liberalization. It also questions the positioning of Lat-Crit scholars to remain silent or complicit with the IMF's agenda. Canova provides a counter-narrative that is rich in historical revisionism, heterodox economics, and sociological conclusions. His recognition of the global unemployment crisis - made largely invisible by orthodox economics and flawed government measurements - is combined with existential insights about the nature of underemployment on the formation of individual identity and cultural …

Cloning Of The Bovine Immunodeficiency Virus Gag Gene And Development Of A Recombinant-Protein-Based Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, Ling Zheng, Michelle Swanson, Jinghua Liao, Charles Wood, Sanjay Kapil, Ron Snider, Thomas A. Loughin, Harish Minocha

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was established for the rapid detection of specific bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) antibodies in cattle, using recombinant Gag protein as an antigen. The gag coding region from BIV was cloned into an expression vector, pQE32, which expressed high levels of recombinant protein from Escherichia coli. The ELISA was standardized by a checkerboard titration against known BIV-positive and -negative sera from cattle and a monoclonal antibody to the Gag protein. A total of 139 cattle serum samples, from the diagnostic laboratory at Kansas State University, Manhattan, and from the Dairy Station, Louisiana State University, Baton …

The Bankruptcy Trust As A Legal Person, Thomas E. Plank Jul 2000

The Bankruptcy Trust As A Legal Person, Thomas E. Plank

Scholarly Works

The purpose of this article is to show how the Bankruptcy Code authorizes the creation of the bankruptcy trust as a legal person. The filing of a petition under the Bankruptcy Code creates an "estate" consisting of enumerated property interests. The Code also provides for the appointment of a trustee-a separate bankruptcy trustee or, in chapter 11 or chapter 12 cases, the debtor in possession-with broad powers to act as the representative of the estate. The Code does not, however, expressly define the status of the estate as a legal entity. Although the Code occasionally speaks of the estate as …

Molecular Aspect Of Leaf Senescence, Edward Himelblau, Betania Quirino, Yoo-Sun Noh, Richard Amasino Jul 2000

Molecular Aspect Of Leaf Senescence, Edward Himelblau, Betania Quirino, Yoo-Sun Noh, Richard Amasino

Biological Sciences

Senescence is the last stage of leaf development and one type of programmed cell death that occurs in plants. The relationships among senescence programs that are induced by a variety of factors have been addressed at a molecular level in recent studies. Furthermore, an overlap between the pathogen-response and senescence programs is beginning to be characterized. The complexity of the senescence program is also evident in studies of senescence-specific gene regulation and the role of photosynthesis and plant hormones in senescence regulation. New molecular-genetic approaches are expected to be useful in unraveling the molecular mechanisms of the leaf senescence program.

Sequence Analysis Of Bacterial Dna In The Colon And Stomach Of The Tyrolean Iceman, Raul J. Cano, Friedrich Tiefenbrunner, Massimo Ubaldi, Clarissa Del Cueto, Stefania Luciani, Tobe Cox, Paula Orkand, Karl H. Kunzel, Franco Rollo Jul 2000

Sequence Analysis Of Bacterial Dna In The Colon And Stomach Of The Tyrolean Iceman, Raul J. Cano, Friedrich Tiefenbrunner, Massimo Ubaldi, Clarissa Del Cueto, Stefania Luciani, Tobe Cox, Paula Orkand, Karl H. Kunzel, Franco Rollo

Biological Sciences

The male human body found in an Alpine glacier on September 19, 1991 ("Tyrolean Iceman") has, for the first time in history, given scientists a chance to perform detailed anatomical, histological, and molecular investigations on the organs of a person from the Neolithic Age (5350-5100 B.P.). In the present study, tissue samples aseptically taken from the stomach and the colon of the mummy were utilized for DNA extraction, and the DNA was PCR-amplified, using primer pairs designed to bind to fragments of the 16s ribosomal RNA gene (16s rDNA) of a broad range of bacteria. The PCR products were cloned …

Wavelet-Based Approach For Structural Damage Detection, Z. Hou, Mohammad N. Noori, R. St. Amand Jul 2000

Wavelet-Based Approach For Structural Damage Detection, Z. Hou, Mohammad N. Noori, R. St. Amand

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

A wavelet-based approach is proposed for structural damage detection and health monitoring. Characteristics of representative vibration signals under the wavelet transformation are examined. The methodology is then applied to simulation data generated from a simple structural model subjected to a harmonic excitation. The model consists of multiple breakable springs, some of which may suffer irreversible damage when the response exceeds a threshold value or the number of cycles of motion is accumulated beyond their fatigue life. In cases of either abrupt or accumulative damages, occurrence of damage and the moment when it occurs can be clearly determined in the details …

The Prevalence-Based Need For Adapted Physical Education Teachers In The United States, Jiabei Zhang Jul 2000

The Prevalence-Based Need For Adapted Physical Education Teachers In The United States, Jiabei Zhang

Human Performance and Health Education Faculty Research

The purpose was to develop a method for projecting the need for adapted physical education (APE) teachers in the public schools in the United States. This method was derived from a prevalence-based model---dividing the nurn- ber of APE students enrolled by the APE student-teacher ratio and then sub- tracting the number of APE teachers hired. This model used the findings of Kelly and Gansneder (1998) that (a) 4% of the school population required APE services and (b) the overall national APE student-teacher ratio was 104: 1. The results revealed a need for 22,116 additional APE teachers nationwide as well as …
