Method Of Exercise Intstruction And Exercise Frequency Among Older Women Diagnosed With Osteoporosis, Tina D. Highfill

MSN Research Projects

Osteoporosis is a major health concern for 8 million women in the US. Although there is no cure, exercise has been identified as a preventive measure against bone loss. Medical costs for osteoporosis are expected to be $60 billion by 2020. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in the method of exercise instruction and frequency of exercise among older women diagnosed with osteoporosis. Orem’s Self- Care Deficit Theory of Nursing has been selected as the theoretical framework. A nonexperimental, comparison design was used. A convenient sample consisted of 16 females over age 50, …

Pagophagia And Hemoglobin Levels In Pregnant Women, Contessa Ward Aug 2000

Pagophagia And Hemoglobin Levels In Pregnant Women, Contessa Ward

MSN Research Projects

Pica is a behavior characterized by the compulsive, persistent ingestion of non-food substances. It is a longstanding practice that has far-reaching implications for prevention and treatment. Pagophagia, or the excessive, compulsive consumption of ice, is a subcategory of pica. Although pica has been documented for centuries, there are limited studies regarding pagophagia and its effects in pregnant women. A comparative descriptive study was conducted to determine whether pagophagia is related to hemoglobin levels during pregnancy. Becker's Health Belief Model was utilized as the theoretical framework. Data were gathered by means of retrospective chart audit. The hypothesis was there would be …

Congestive Heart Failure In Elders: Relationships Among Adherence Behaviors, Depression, And Self-Efficacy, Sue Temple Aug 2000

Congestive Heart Failure In Elders: Relationships Among Adherence Behaviors, Depression, And Self-Efficacy, Sue Temple

MSN Research Projects

An estimated 4.8 million Americans have congestive heart failure (CHF). Increasing prevalence, hospitalizations, and deaths have made CHF a major disease affecting elders in the United States. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to determine if correlations existed among depression, self-efficacy, and adherence behaviors of elders with CHF. Three null hypotheses guided the study: H^^, There is no correlation between depression and adherence behaviors in elders living with CHF. H^^, There is no correlation between self efficacy and adherence behaviors in elders living with CHF. Hq3 , There is no correlation between depression and self-efficacy in elders …

Gender Discrimination In Nursing, Robert Swanson Aug 2000

Gender Discrimination In Nursing, Robert Swanson

MSN Research Projects

Gender discrimination related to women's struggles to gain access to career ladders and equal compensation within a male-dominated society has been documented. However, little research has been conducted regarding discrimination among male nurses in a female-dominated work environment. In particular, there is a paucity of empirical data regarding male nurses in advanced clinical practice. As the number of male nurse practitioners increases, there is heightened concern about discrimination. The purpose of this study was to determine whether male nurse practitioners perceived gender discrimination in the workplace. Using Leininger's (1991) Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality and Trentham and Larwood's …

Corporate Name Vs Brand Name: Demystification Of Controversy, B. C. Ghosh, Min Lie Chan, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The board of directors worry about it, researchers paper it, and ad men talk about it. But few managers really know whether or not image affects the purchase of the company’s products - particularly in the consumer market” [Hardy 1970, pg. 70]. Up till today, there remains a general lack of understanding of the determinants and consequences of corporate associations, though researchers have begun to make inroads [Brown, 1997]. Addressing the above issue, the overall objective of this paper is to determine if there is any congruence between promoting consumer brand name in the FMCG industry and the retailers’ corporate …

Accounting For The Complexity Of Causal Explanations In The Wake Of An Environmental Risk, Lee Ann Kahlor, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin Aug 2000

Accounting For The Complexity Of Causal Explanations In The Wake Of An Environmental Risk, Lee Ann Kahlor, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

In 1993, Milwaukee-area residents experienced a nationally publicized outbreak of cryptosporidium, a parasite, which infested the metropolitan drinking supply and sickened some 400,000 people. Using survey data gathered from 610 adult residents in the wake of that outbreak, this study looks at predictors of the complexity of people’s understanding of two causal components of the outbreak: 1) how the parasite got into the water supply and 2) how it causes illness once in the human body. Analysis of open-ended data indicated that, consistent with the knowledge gap hypothesis, socioeconomic status is a significant predictor of differences in explanatory complexity. And, …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Age On The Academic Performance Of Students In The Liberty University External Degree Program, Frank Lyle King Aug 2000

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Age On The Academic Performance Of Students In The Liberty University External Degree Program, Frank Lyle King

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to explore whether the age of a Liberty University External Degree Program (EDP) student impacts the degree of student success, as measured by the earned grade point average (GPA). EDP student GPAs were compared with Liberty University resident students GPAs. The EDP students consistently performed better than the resident students in all age groups examined. Demographic variables such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, marital status, military status, and amount of credits transferred to Liberty University were found not to be statistically significant factors in the performance of EDP students compared to resident students.

A New Role For A Snare Protein As A Regulator Of The Ypt7/Rab-Dependent Stage Of Docking, Christian Ungermann, Albert Price, William Wickner Aug 2000

A New Role For A Snare Protein As A Regulator Of The Ypt7/Rab-Dependent Stage Of Docking, Christian Ungermann, Albert Price, William Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

The homotypic fusion of yeast vacuoles occurs in an ordered cascade of priming, docking, and fusion. The linkage between these steps has so far remained unclear. We now report that Vam7p (the vacuolar SNAP-23/25 homolog) signals from the cis-SNARE complex to Ypt7p (the vacuolar Rab/Ypt) to initiate the docking process. After Vam7p has been released from the cis-SNARE complex by Sec18p-mediated priming, it is still required for Ypt7p-dependent docking and it needs Ypt7p to remain on the vacuole.

Peer Support As A Protective Factor In The Impact Of War On Adolescents In Lebanon, Nadine S. Fakhran Aug 2000

Peer Support As A Protective Factor In The Impact Of War On Adolescents In Lebanon, Nadine S. Fakhran

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Children exposed to situations of war have been shown to develop behavioral as well as psychological difficulties. Researchers have observed, however, that not all children manifest these difficulties in reaction to war situations. Therefore, scientists have attempted to look at resilient children, investigating protective and vulnerability factors in the child's environment. One such protective factor is social support. Although there have been several studies on social support, those studies have tended to focus on family support. There seems to be a void in the literature on the effects of peer support on post-traumatic stress reactions in children. The present study …

Vibrio Cholerae H-Ns Silences Virulence Gene Expression At Multiple Steps In The Toxr Regulatory Cascade, Melinda B. Nye, James D. Pfau, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Aug 2000

Vibrio Cholerae H-Ns Silences Virulence Gene Expression At Multiple Steps In The Toxr Regulatory Cascade, Melinda B. Nye, James D. Pfau, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

H-NS is an abundant nucleoid-associated protein involved in the maintenance of chromosomal architecture in bacteria. H-NS also has a role in silencing the expression of a variety of environmentally regulated genes during growth under nonpermissive conditions. In this study we demonstrate a role for H-NS in the negative modulation of expression of several genes within the ToxR virulence regulon ofVibrio cholerae. Deletion of hns resulted in high, nearly constitutive levels of expression of the genes encoding cholera toxin, toxin-coregulated pilus, and the ToxT virulence gene regulatory protein. For the cholera toxin- and ToxT-encoding genes, elevated expression in an …

Addressing Educational Needs Of Youth In Today's Society, Kitty-Sue Schlink Aug 2000

Addressing Educational Needs Of Youth In Today's Society, Kitty-Sue Schlink

Journal of Extension

The responsibility for who will educate today's youth is shifting. Where the parents, schools, and the community once provided an equal share in the teaching of our youth, a deficit is occurring. Today's child may only have one parent, class sizes may be too large, and the community may be stretched beyond its ability to provide assistance. Extension after school programs aid in school enrichment; non-traditional 4-H projects get youth involved in their communities; and traditional 4-H programs and project camps provide adult role models and subject knowledge for youth. Extension is well situated to provide youth education in today's …

Although the overall rate of teen pregnancy in the United States has been declining, rates have remained high for younger unmarried teens. Evaluation studies of pregnancy prevention programs indicate that many are ineffective or not well evaluated. The focus of this article is to identify and share 10 suggested "best practices" from the field and literature. Three critical practices identified are: a youth development component, family involvement, and culturally relevant practices. Implications for Cooperative Extension programming are discussed.

Nephi And His Asherah, Daniel C. Peterson Jul 2000

Nephi And His Asherah, Daniel C. Peterson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Asherah was the chief goddess of the Canaanites. She was El’s wife and the mother and wet nurse of the other gods. At least some Israelites worshipped her over a period from the conquest of Canaan in the second millennium before Christ to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC (the time of Lehi’s departure with his family). Asherah was associated with trees—sacred trees. The rabbinic authors of the Jewish Mishna (second–third century ad) explain the asherah as a tree that was worshipped. In 1 Nephi 11, Nephi considers the meaning of the tree of life as he sees it …

Desert Epiphany: Sariah And The Women In 1 Nephi, Camille Fronk Jul 2000

Desert Epiphany: Sariah And The Women In 1 Nephi, Camille Fronk

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Insights can be gained by considering the eight-year wilderness sojourn of Lehi’s company through the eyes of the women who were there. Leaving the comforts of civilization for the difficulties of the desert would have been very challenging. While the record in 1 Nephi mentions nine women, Sariah was the only one identified by name. Nephi records Sariah’s struggles as well as her testimony. The record of the women in 1 Nephi communicates much about the need to seek and receive one’s own witness of truth.

Taxing The Establishment Clause: The Revolutionary Decision Of The Arizona Supreme Court In Kotterman V. Killian, Kevin G. Welner

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article explores the nature and implications of a 1999 decision of the Arizona Supreme Court, upholding the constitutionality of a state tax credit statute. The statute offers a $500 tax credit to taxpayers who donate money to non-profit organizations which, in turn, donate the money in grants to students in order to help defray the costs of attending private and parochial schools. The author concludes that the Arizona decision elevates cleverness in devising a statutory scheme above the substance of long-established constitutional doctrine.
