Introduction: We evaluated the effect of health education on the use of iodized salt in a remote region. Methods: We randomly selected 31 villages in teh Lotkoh tehsil of district Chitral in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. We then randomly selected 7 households from each village and inteviewed the eldest women of the family. We also tested samples of salt for iodine concentration at the user's level. Results: Eighty-five percent of families (184/217) used iodized salt exclusively. Among the samples population, the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) informed 67% about the importance of iodized salt. Shopkeepers and neighbors informed 25%. …

The Monument To Brigham Young And The Pioneers : One Hundred Years Of Controversy, J. Michael Hunter
Faculty Publications
For more than a century, the Brigham Young Monument in Salt Lake City has been the center of sometimes acrimonious controversy. The idea and organization to create a monument were begun in 1891. The statue of Brigham Young was completed by Cyrus Dallin in 1893. Many delays in raising funds caused the monument not to be finished until 1900. Thereafter it often became the target of those trying to improve traffic conditions in the downtown area. In 1993, the monument was moved just north of the intersection to improve the flow of traffic. On the monuments one hundredth anniversary, "The …

Effects Of Chronic Fluoranthene Exposure On Sibling Species Of Capitella With Different Development Modes, Inez Linke-Gamenick, Valery E. Forbes, Nuria Méndez
Valery Forbes Publications
Toxic effects of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fluoranthene (FLU) on life-history traits and their demographic consequences were investigated in 3 non-interbreeding Capitella sibling species with different physiological tolerances and developmental modes: sensitive Capitella sp. S from oxygen-rich intertidal sediments of the North Sea (Germany); tolerant Capitella sp. M from sediments near shallow hydrothermal vents off Milos (Greece), a habitat low in organic matter with steep abiotic gradients and high sulfide concentrations; tolerant Capitella sp. I from New York (USA), known to dominate eutrophicated/polluted environments. Both Capitella spp. M and I can develop into hermaphrodites and have lecithotrophic larval development. In …

The Ethics Of Placebo-Controlled Trials In Developing Countries To Prevent Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv, John N. Williams
The Ethics Of Placebo-Controlled Trials In Developing Countries To Prevent Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv, John N. Williams
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Placebo-trials on HIV-infected pregnant women in developing countries like Thailand and Uganda have provoked recent controversy. Such experiments aim to find a treatment that will cut the rate of vertical transmission more efficiently than existing treatments like zidovudine. This scenario is first stated as generally as possible, before three ethical principles found in the Belmont Report, itself a sharpening of the Helsinki Declaration, are stated. These three principles are the Principle of Utility, the Principle of Autonomy and the Principle of Justice. These are taken as voices of moral imperative. But although each has intuitive appeal, it can be shown …

Clinical Experience In Rehabilitation Of Ankylosing Spondylitis Associated With Spinal Cord Injury, Li-Chen Tung, Chih-Hsiang Ho, Liu-Ing Bih
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton. Spinal ankylosis reduces vertebral flexibility, exacerbates osteoporotic change, and leads to a loss of the biomechanical function of the spine. Thus, even small impacts might cause vertebral fracture or damage of the spinal cord in the patients with ankylosing spondylitis. This retrospective study included 11 patients with ankylosing spondylitis who were admitted to a hos-pital between 1991 and 1999 for rehabilitative service after spinal cord injury. Of these patients, 10 were male, and one female. Average age was 46.3 ± 14.3 years. Falls accounted for injuries in six patients, traffic accidents …
Brain Morphology In Dyslexic Children, Ling-Fu Meng, Li-Yu Hung
Brain Morphology In Dyslexic Children, Ling-Fu Meng, Li-Yu Hung
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This article concerns the correlation between children with dyslexia and brain morphology. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that five major differences exist between dyslexic and typical children. Primarily, the genu of the corpus callosum is significant smaller in dyslexic children. Secondly, the corpus callosum in dyslexic children with family history is larger and thicker. Thirdly, dyslexics demonstrate more deviations from normal patterns of left and right hemisphere asymmetry. Fourthly, posterior superior surface of temporal lobe, planum temporal surface area and brain volume in left brain are smaller in dyslexics. Finally, six brain regions account for …
Posttraumatic Spinal Cord Cyst:Three Cases Report And Literature Review, Nai-Chiung Huang, Ta-Sen Wei
Posttraumatic Spinal Cord Cyst:Three Cases Report And Literature Review, Nai-Chiung Huang, Ta-Sen Wei
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Posttraumatic spinal cord cyst is a late sequelae of spinal cord injury. The cyst has no or little inf-luence on the patient’s neurological functions. We report three patients of spinal cord injury complica-ted with posttraumatic spinal cord cyst whose motor functions were compromized due to increased spasticity. The incidence of the cyst may be up to 50%. The cyst may come from liquefaction of the cord tissue after local edema, necrosis and hematoma, or a myelomalacia due to local ischemia. The best choice of the diagnostic tool is magnetic resonance imaging. All subjects regained their ambulation function after comprehensive rehabilitation …

Spinal Dural Arteriovenous Fistula : A Casereport, Hsiu-Fang Hsueh, Po-Hong Chen, Jo-Tong Chen, Ta-Shen Kuan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A case of delayed diagnosis of spinal dural arteriovenous fistula is presented. A 65-year-old male presented to our clinic for progressive stiffness and numbness over bilateral lower limbs for 6 months. Neurological examination was suggestive of thoracic spinal cord lesion with signs of both upper and lower motor neuron disorders. Electromyographic examination showed evidence of denervation and re-innervation in the bilateral paraspinal muscles of middle thoracic level. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine revealed trivial changes, but they were neglected initially. Because of clinical fluctuation and progressive deterioration, he was treated as early parkinsonism, stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, transverse …

Gait Analysis By Measuring Ground Reaction Forces In Children Aged From Three To Twelve, Chia-Ling Chen, Wei-Hsien Hong, Hsieh-Ching Chen, Ching-Yi Wu, Chin-Man Wang, May-Kuen Wong, Fuk-Tan Tang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The study analyzed the kinematic parameters, symmetry and consistency as well as the force distribution during walking in the children aged 3 to 12 years old in order to assess the development of the matured gait. One hundred and four children (50 boys, 54 girls) were divided into five groups based on age, with group A aged 3 to 4 years, group B aged 5 to 6 years, group C aged 7 to 8 years, group D aged 9 to 10 years, and group E aged 11 to 12 years old. In this study, we used a computer dynography (CDG) …

Low Back Pain Caused By Scheuermann's Disease: A Casereport, Ming-Chi Lin, Shin-Tsu Chang, Kao-Chung Tsai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Scheuermann's disease is one of the common causes of structural abnormality in the thoracic or thoracolumbar spines. Many theories have been proposed for the etiologies of Scheuermann's disease, but the true etiology remains unclear. The disease has a strong familial tendency which may be inh-erited in an autosomal dominant mode. This article describes a 21-year-old male patient who was suff-ering from low back pain for 2 years. The patient was initially diagnosed as having a scoliosis of the thoracolumbar spine. There was no symptomatic alleviation after initial rehabilitation therapy. Patient then received series of examinations, which revealed anterior wedge deformity …
Feasibility Study To Extract Iron And Chromium From Chromium Contaminated Soils, Wiwat Kamolpornwijit
Feasibility Study To Extract Iron And Chromium From Chromium Contaminated Soils, Wiwat Kamolpornwijit
Dissertations
Chromium contaminated soils, besides being recognized for toxic and hazardous hexavalent chromium, contain high iron concentrations. At some sites, concentrations of iron oxide are higher than 30%. Both iron and chromium in soils have recyclable value provided they can be either concentrated in the oxide form or separated as metal. The concentrated oxide can be used as a substitute for the iron ore. The extracted metal can also be recycled in the steel industry. The objective of this study is to study the feasibility of extracting iron and chromium from soils.
Chromium contaminated soils, can be classified into two groups, …
