Changes In Treatment For Malaria: Western Influence On Indigenous Practice, Kourtney L. James Oct 2000

Changes In Treatment For Malaria: Western Influence On Indigenous Practice, Kourtney L. James

African Diaspora ISPs

This paper assesses the impact of western medical influence on the use of indigenous medical practices for malaria. The research was conducted through interviews and observations in four communities within the city of Cape Coast. Section one focuses on the perceptions of malaria held by members in the communities, while section two determines the traditional and western treatments administered for malaria, including the reasons that support individual choices. Section three centers around the shifts in treatment for malaria occurring during individual lifetimes and across generations. Lastly, section four places the collected data in context of private and government efforts to …

The Death Of The Income Tax (Or, The Rise Of America’S Universal Wage Tax), Edward J. Mccaffery Oct 2000

The Death Of The Income Tax (Or, The Rise Of America’S Universal Wage Tax), Edward J. Mccaffery

Indiana Law Journal

The killing of the income tax has not been open and notorious: such is not the style of contemporary politics. As with other markers of progressive social policy—the promises of universal health care, Obamacare, come to mind6—the income tax is dying a death by stealth, albeit stealth played out in plain view. The plot lines of the tragedy are apparent. The individual “income” tax has been split in two. One tax, for the masses, is a simple, increasingly formless wage tax. This wage/income tax adds higher brackets onto the payroll tax, the model toward which the wage/income tax aims, to …

Are Invisible Hands Good Hands? Moral Hazard, Competition, And The Second-Best In Health Care Markets, Martin Gaynor, Deborah Haas-Wilson, William B. Vogt Oct 2000

Are Invisible Hands Good Hands? Moral Hazard, Competition, And The Second-Best In Health Care Markets, Martin Gaynor, Deborah Haas-Wilson, William B. Vogt

Economics: Faculty Publications

The nature and normative properties of competition in health care markets have long been the subject of much debate. In this paper we consider what the optimal benchmark is in the presence of moral hazard effects on consumption due to health insurance. Intuitively, it seems that imperfect competition in the health care market may constrain this moral hazard by increasing prices. We show that this intuition cannot be correct if insurance markets are competitive. A competitive insurance market will always produce a contract that leaves consumers at least as well off under lower prices as under higher prices.

Unprincipled Exclusions: The Struggle To Achieve Judicial And Legislative Equality For Transgender People, Paisley Currah, Shannon Minter

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Article examines recent efforts to enact civil rights statutes for transgender people in the United States. Part I provides an overview of the largely negative case law on the issue of whether transgender people are protected under existing sex, sexual orientation or disability discrimination laws. This context is provided, in part, to explain why transgender rights advocates have turned to the legislative branches of government to secure basic civil rights protections. Part II describes the initial successes that have been achieved as a result of this new focus on political activism and legislation. Part III examines the actual statutory …

Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications

Calcium β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation has been reported to reduce catabolism and promote gains in strength and fat free mass in untrained individuals initiating training. However, the effects of HMB supplementation on strength and body composition alterations during training in athletes is less clear. This study examined the effects of 28-d of calcium HMB supplementation during intense training on markers of catabolism, body composition, strength, and sprint performance. In a double-blind and randomized manner, 28 NCAA division I-A football players were matched-paired and assigned to supplement their diet for 28-d during winter resistance/agility training (~8 hr/wk) with a carbohydrate placebo …

From Pirates To Partners: Protecting Intellectual Property In China In The Twenty-First Century, Peter K. Yu Oct 2000

From Pirates To Partners: Protecting Intellectual Property In China In The Twenty-First Century, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the United States repeatedly threatened China with a series of economic sanctions, trade wars, non-renewal of most-favored-nation status, and opposition to entry into the World Trade Organization. Such threats eventually led to compromises by the Chinese government and the signing of intellectual property agreements in 1992, 1995, and 1996. Despite these agreements, intellectual property piracy remains rampant in China.

Although China initially had serious concerns about the United States's threats of trade sanctions, the constant use of such threats by the U.S. government has led China to change its reaction and approach. By …

Varying The Abundance Of O Antigen In Rhizobium Etli And Its Effect On Symbiosis With Phaseolus Vulgaris, K. Dale Noel, Lennart Scott Forsberg, Russell W. Carlson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Judged by migration of its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in gel electrophoresis, the O antigen of Rhizobium etli mutant strain CE166 was apparently of normal size. However, its LPS sugar composition and staining of the LPS bands after electrophoresis indicated that the proportion of its LPS molecules that possessed O antigen was only 40% of the wild-type value. Its LPS also differed from the wild type by lacking quinovosamine (2-amino-2,6-dideoxyglucose). Both of these defects were due to a single genetic locus carrying a Tn5 insertion. The deficiency in O-antigen amount, but not the absence of quinovosamine, was suppressed by transferring into …

Global Forces And Latino Population Growth In The Midwest: A Regional And Subregional Analysis, Lourdes Gouveia, Rogelio Saenz

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The last decade has seen a significant growth of the Latino population in the Midwest, particularly in rural communities. We discuss the forces that have stimulated the growth of the Latino population in the region. We use data from the Current Population Surveys (1988-1997) to assess the demographic and employment growth of the Latino population in the Midwest. Because of the limitations of secondary data, we also illustrate the growth of the Latino population with evidence from Nebraska and a selected area of the state. Data analysis suggests that population estimates of the Latino population generated by the US Bureau …

Fantasy Versus Redemption: Religious Possibility In Little Voice, Christopher R. Deacy Oct 2000

Fantasy Versus Redemption: Religious Possibility In Little Voice, Christopher R. Deacy

Journal of Religion & Film

The author examines the religious significance of a recent and moderately successful British film which, while heavily reviewed in the international press and on the world wide web, has not generally been perceived by critics and audiences to comprise an overtly religious vision. Although in its first hour the film conforms to the somewhat ephemeral and fantasy-oriented structure of traditional Hollywood-style escapism, Little Voice is open to a fertile religious reading. The film abandons traditional Hollywood devices and bears witness to the Christian theme of redemption.

Motives For Corporate Philanthropy In El Salvador: Altruism And Political Legitimacy, Carol M. Sanchez Oct 2000

Motives For Corporate Philanthropy In El Salvador: Altruism And Political Legitimacy, Carol M. Sanchez

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper discusses how Salvadoran companies practice corporate philanthropy in El Salvador, and what might motivate it. First, I briefly discuss three principal theories of corporate philanthropy, and explore some current trends in international corporate philanthropy to highlight some of the motives Salvadoran companies may have to participate in charitable activities. Then, I discuss the history of the Salvadoran private sector to help us understand philanthropic activity today. Next, I suggest that philanthropic acts by Salvadoran firms are driven by altruistic and politically strategic motives, and reflect individualistic and paternalistic attitudes. In the discussion, I include examples of Salvadoran corporate …

Determinants Of Health Promoting Behaviors In Older Adults, Kay Wallace

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between Health Locus of Control, selected demographic variables, and the Health Promoting Behaviors of Physical Activity and Nutrition in older persons. Pender’s (1996) Health Promotion Model (HPM) was used as the conceptual framework to guide this study.

The sample consisted of 48 subjects, aged 65 years and older, who resided in senior living centers. The subjects were predominantly Caucasian (94%) and female (81%). Research instruments were self-administered questionnaires that consisted of demographic data, the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, and the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale.
