Telemedicine Application At The University Of Rochester Medical Center Strong Memorial Hospital In Conjunction With The New York State Department Of Corrections, Jeannine Christensen
Theses
Telemedicine has been around for several years and it is inevitable that this technology will shape the current healthcare environment. Doctors are often faced with the challenges of the laws of time and distance. With the presence of telemedicine, the idea of having access to a physician at any given time becomes a reality. This paper will present an exciting concept of telemedicine for today and tomorrow with an emphasis on the advancement of health care delivery systems. This thesis will also attempt to present the cost saving factors that telemedicine can provide not only to patient care but also …
Illusory Coerrelations In School Psychologists' Diagnoses Of Learning Disabilities, Marc Renzoni
Illusory Coerrelations In School Psychologists' Diagnoses Of Learning Disabilities, Marc Renzoni
Theses
Illusory correlation is the perception of an association between two uncorrected variables such as intersubtest scatter on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition (WISC-III) and the presence of a learning disability. This study assessed the extent to which school psychologists are influenced by this illusory correlation. Three independent variables were varied systematically. One variable was relevant to the diagnosis of a learning disability (a discrepancy between expected and actual levels of achievement on the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT)). Another was irrelevant to the diagnosis (intersubtest scatter on the WISC-III). The third independent variable was used as …
Human Agency And The Process Of Social Change In The Religious Structure Of A Traditional Society, Jonathan Mermis-Cava
Human Agency And The Process Of Social Change In The Religious Structure Of A Traditional Society, Jonathan Mermis-Cava
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis is an examination of human agency within the process of social change as it has been displayed by the members of a traditional society. It is based on participant observation data that was collected between 1995-97 when the author served as a Peace Corps Volunteer living amongst a tribe of maroons, known as Saramakans, deep in the rainforest of South America. Exploring the assumption that changes in traditional societies have been forced upon them, this thesis examines the transformations that have occurred in the religious structure of the Saramakan tribe. From a social constructionist theoretical viewpoint, data suggests …

A Call For A Modified Standard: The Supreme Court Struggles To Define When Private Organizations Can Discriminate In Contravention Of State Antidiscrimination Laws In Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale, 120 S. Ct. 2446 (2000), Sean B. Druyon
Nebraska Law Review
Since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the federal government has played a significant role in reducing invidious discrimination against individuals on the basis of race, religion, color, and national origin. In the wake of even broader state laws against discrimination lie many private organizations treading to stay afloat in what has become a tumultuous sea of clashing constitutional rights. These private organizations justify discriminatory membership policies on the grounds they engage in expressive association protected by the First Amendment, while individuals denied membership to these organizations claim equal protection of the law under the Fourteenth Amendment and under state …

Although the Congressional fight over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may have ended when the NAFTA Implementation Act passed by a narrow margin, the controversy surrounding NAFTA has not. In Made in the USA Foundation v. United States, the United Steel Workers of American and others asserted that NAFTA was void because it had been approved as a congressional-executive agreement when it should have been approved as a treaty under Article II, Clause 2 of the U.S. constitution. The author discusses the constitutional law issue raised by the lawsuit, namely the validity of the long-standing U.S. practice of …
Philosophy Into Practice? Community Policing Units And Domestic Violence Victim Participation, Amanda L. Robinson, Meghan S. Stroshine
Philosophy Into Practice? Community Policing Units And Domestic Violence Victim Participation, Amanda L. Robinson, Meghan S. Stroshine
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Much research has focused on the police response to domestic violence; however, relatively little research has considered performance differences of various types of police officers. Although there has been widespread adoption of community policing by police departments across the country, it is not conclusive as to whether units with a specific community policing philosophy perform better than traditional units when handling domestic violence calls. The current study addresses this issue by analyzing the factors associated with victim participation; specifically, do officers and detectives operating under a specific community policing mandate produce higher rates of victim participation? Bivariate and multivariate analyses …
Health Care Divided: Race And Healing A Nation, Sidney D. Watson
Health Care Divided: Race And Healing A Nation, Sidney D. Watson
All Faculty Scholarship
Race matters. Race—particularly racial segregation—casts a pervasive shadow over the organization of American health care. It influences the ownership and governance of institutional providers. It helps account for the high cost of health care in the United States. It contributes to America’s abysmal health status, among the worst of the industrialized world. It is reflected, in part, in the lack of national health insurance. So David Barton Smith begins this book, a book he describes as the story of “a divided nation, a divided health care system, and the uncompleted journey to heal both.”[1]

Bockarie, Peter U. Fischer, Steven A. Williams, Peter A. Zimmerman, Lysaght Griffin, Michael P. Alpers, James W. Kazura
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Chemotherapy-based eradication programs are aimed at stopping transmission of Wuchereria bancroftiby its obligatory mosquito vector. This study compares one year post-treatment W. bancrofti infection rates of Anopheles punctulatus, the main vector of lymphatic filariasis in Papua New Guinea, using traditional dissection techniques and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based ELISA of a parasite-specific Ssp I repeat. A total of 633 mosquitoes in 35 batches were dissected. Six batches contained W. bancrofti-infected mosquitoes, giving a minimum infection rate of 0.9%. This value was not different than the actual infection rate, which was 9 (1.4%) of 633 mosquitoes (P 0.48). The DNA was …
Studying The Expression Of A Novel Microsatellite Mrna In Chironomous Riparius, Mina Ranzurmal
Studying The Expression Of A Novel Microsatellite Mrna In Chironomous Riparius, Mina Ranzurmal
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The expression of a unique mRNA containing a microsatellite sequence was studied in C. riparius using differential display. First, the rnicrosatellite fragment was sequenced using Sanger's Sequencing method. The microsatellite cDNA contained 11 "ACA" repeats, 12 "AC" repeats, and 5 "CTC" repeats. Second, the affects of cadmium and heat shock on rnicrosatellite mRNA expression were studied. In cadmium experiments, larvae were exposed to low cadmium concentrations (0, 0.04, 0.4, and 4.0 mM) for 24 and 48 h and high cadmium concentrations (0, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0, and 16.0 mM) for 48 h. The effects of cadmium on fed larvae at …

Reading The World Of University : What Counts?, Pamela Green, Gloria Latham
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper will address the issues encountered by first year students in reading and reshaping the culture of university. The interim findings of a six year study will be dismantled in order to uncover what counts in the experience of first year university and the ramifications for educational practice and discourse. Feedback from staff continues to indicate that there is growing disparity between their expectations of first year students and student performance in areas such as independent learning, research skills, academic reading and writing, as well as the use of new technologies. There also seems to be a gap between …
The Integrated Expressive Arts And Humanities : Coping With Curriculum Change, Linley Campbell
The Integrated Expressive Arts And Humanities : Coping With Curriculum Change, Linley Campbell
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The concept of curriculum integration in education has recently received increased attention. This has been largely due to the introduction of Learning Area Profiles, Statements and Outcomes, and most recently the Curriculum Framework. 'Integration, breadth and balance' is one of the seven key principles underlying The Curriculum Framework for Western Australian Schools. (Curriculum Council of Western Australia, 1998). Collectively, these documents emphasise the integration of knowledge, skills and values in the eight key learning areas of the curriculum. Such a holistic view of the curriculum is considered to be fundamental to sound educational practice.
