Computer Science Faculty Works

An effective, integrated telemedicine system has been developed that allows (a) teleconsultation between local primary health care providers (primary care physicians and general radiologists) and remote imaging subspecialists and (b) active patient participation related to his or her medical condition and patient education. The initial stage of system development was a traditional teleradiology consultation service between general radiologists and specialists; this established system was expanded to include primary care physicians and patients. The system was developed by using a well-defined process model, resulting in three integrated modules: a patient module, a primary health care provider module, and a specialist module. …

Reflections On Being A Law School Dean In An Interconnected World, Claudio Grossman Jan 2000

Reflections On Being A Law School Dean In An Interconnected World, Claudio Grossman

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

After reaching a certain level of momentum, a law school can pretty much run itself. Even in the absence of leadership, the law school will continue to function as it has in the past; students will come each year, and classes will be held. A sort of inertia results, in which nothing changes; things continue as they always have. Inertia is a dangerous thing in education, and it is the responsibility of the law school's dean to prevent it. A law school dean is charged with contributing to the development of a vision that will guide the law school in …

Environmental Law And International Assistance: The Challenge Of Strengthening Environmental Law In The Developing World, William L. Andreen

Articles

All too often there is a disturbing gap between what governments say and what governments do The same appears to be true for international donors During the past 10 years the developing world has been awash with donorfunded national environmental action plans and national environmental programs national conservation strategies national biodiversity strategies national agricultural programs and national forestry action plans These documents generally recognize that longterm economic development can only be sustained on an ecologically sound base Many also purport to recognize that the policies and strategies that they set forth will remain empty pronouncements unless appropriate laws and institutional …

High School Career Academies: A Pathway To Education Reform In Urban School Districts?, Nan L. Maxwell, Victor Rubin Jan 2000

High School Career Academies: A Pathway To Education Reform In Urban School Districts?, Nan L. Maxwell, Victor Rubin

Upjohn Press

Maxwell and Rubin examine the capacity of career academies to address academic reform in terms of increased education and workplace skills. They accomplish this on two levels. First, they assess academies' development and implementation within an urban school district. Then they assess academies' potential to promote postsecondary success among academy students as compared to nonacademy students. Their findings will help educators and policymakers better understand the strengths and limitations of this method of reform.

Characterization Of Hyporheic Zone Processes Of A Northern Prairie Stream, David B. Rush Jan 2000

Characterization Of Hyporheic Zone Processes Of A Northern Prairie Stream, David B. Rush

Theses and Dissertations

A hyporheic zone occurs beneath and adjacent to streams where surface water and groundwater mix. This zone is known to be a reservoir for solutes and a habitat for interstitial organisms. Hyporheic zone boundaries in the Tongue River, North Dakota, were investigated through examination of the physicochemical and biological gradients present in the stream channel and bank sediments. The effects of cattle grazing at the streamside interface of the riparian zone were also examined at two locations to determine land use impacts on the hyporheic zone.

Electrical conductivity (EC) and ammonium gradients were observed beneath the stream channel via nests …

Blood Glucose Estimation Accuracy In Children With Diabetes: An Investigation Of Repeated Practice With Latent Growth Curve Modeling, Julie Ann Wagner Jan 2000

Blood Glucose Estimation Accuracy In Children With Diabetes: An Investigation Of Repeated Practice With Latent Growth Curve Modeling, Julie Ann Wagner

Open Access Dissertations

Blood glucose (BG) estimation is an important part of maintaining euglycemia in individuals with diabetes. Interventions to increase accuracy were designed without taking into account the natural effects of practice. The current study investigated the effects of naturalistic practice on BG estimation accuracy. Latent growth curve modeling (LGCM) was used to analyze data from 43 children with insulin dependent diabetes. LGCM consists of two stages. In the first stage, a growth curve was fit to the repeated measures of each individual in the sample. Results indicated that the true growth trajectory was curvilinear, and best represented by a quadratic function. …

School Choice, The First Amendment, And Social Justice, Nicole Stelle Garnett, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2000

School Choice, The First Amendment, And Social Justice, Nicole Stelle Garnett, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

This Article is intended to be a primer on the legality and morality of educational choice—"School Choice in a Nutshell," if you will. We are resigned to being pre-empted by the tireless work of grassroots activists, the choices of voters, and the decisions of judges. Still, we hope, in somewhat polemical fashion, to establish two basic claims. First, school choice, properly understood, is constitutional. And second, school choice is both sensible and just.

In the end, we believe "school choice . . . is essential to achieving equality of opportunity for American children, rich or poor. School choice treats the …

Natural Law, Marriage, And The Thought Of Karol Wojtyla, John J. Coughlin Jan 2000

Natural Law, Marriage, And The Thought Of Karol Wojtyla, John J. Coughlin

The Article continues by analyzing two features of the natural law tradition as described in the philosophical writings of Karol Wojtyla. The first feature concerns marriage and family as the fundamental human community. The second considers marriage as a virtuous relationship. The Article concludes with practical suggestions for the legal profession and legal education with regard to counseling clients about marriage.

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Emissions from household stoves, especially those using solid fuels, can contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and have adverse health impacts. Few data are available on emissions from the numerous types of cookstoves used in developing countries. We have systematically measured emissions from 56 fuel/stove combinations in India and China, a large fraction of the combinations in use world-wide. A database was generated containing emission factors of direct and indirect GHGs and other airborne pollutants such as CO2, CO, CH4, TNMHC, N2O, SO2, NOx, TSP, etc. In this paper, we report on the 28 fuel/stove combinations tested …
