Regulating The Interpersonal Self: Strategic Self-Regulation For Coping With Rejection Sensitivity, Ozlem Ayduk, Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, Walter Mischel, Geraldine Downey, Philip K. Peake, Monica Rodriguez Jan 2000

Regulating The Interpersonal Self: Strategic Self-Regulation For Coping With Rejection Sensitivity, Ozlem Ayduk, Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, Walter Mischel, Geraldine Downey, Philip K. Peake, Monica Rodriguez

Psychology: Faculty Publications

People high in rejection sensitivity (RS) anxiously expect rejection and are at risk for interpersonal and personal distress. Two studies examined the role of self-regulation through strategic attention deployment in moderating the link between RS and maladaptive outcomes. Self-regulation was assessed by the delay of gratification (DG) paradigm in childhood. In Study 1, preschoolers from the Stanford University community who participated in the DG paradigm were assessed 20 years later. Study 2 assessed low-income, minority middle school children on comparable measures. DG ability buffered high-RS people from interpersonal difficulties (aggression, peer rejection) and diminished well-being (e.g., low self-worth, higher drug …

Biological Control Of Canada Thistle (Cirsium Arvense) In South Dakota, Z. Liu, S. A. Clay, M. Brinkman

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Canada thistle, Cirsium arvense L., is an aggressive invasive species that is found in the northern United States and not easily controlled by chemical and mechanical methods. Integrating biological control agents with other methods may improve control. This study investigated the effects of Canada thistle gall fly (Urophora cardui Diptera: Tephritidae); Canada thistle stem or crown weevil (Ceutorhynchus litura Coleoptera: Curculionidae); Canada thistle bud weevil (Larinus planus Coleoptera: Curculionidae); and Canada thistle tortoise beetle (Cassida rubiginosa Coleoptera: Chysomelidae) on Canada thistle at three SD sites 1997 and 1998, about three years after initial release. Active stem weevil larvae were found …

On The Evolution Of The Canonical Dissent, Anita S. Krishnakumar Jan 2000

On The Evolution Of The Canonical Dissent, Anita S. Krishnakumar

Faculty Publications

Legal theorists increasingly have come to recognize and study the existence of a constitutional canon composed of highly authoritative legal texts that command special reverence in the law. Among these highly authoritative texts are a series of dissenting opinions—e.g., Justice Holmes's in Lochner v. New York, and Justice Harlan's in Plessy v. Ferguson—that ironically are more famous than the majority opinions in most other cases. This Article examines the evolution of the dissenting canon, seeking to explain both the methods by which various dissenting opinions became canonized and the motivating factors behind these canonizations.

Specifically, the Article argues that the …

The World Trade Constitution, John O. Mcginnis, Mark L. Movsesian Jan 2000

The World Trade Constitution, John O. Mcginnis, Mark L. Movsesian

Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom holds that the World Trade Organization (WTO) necessarily poses a threat to sovereignty and representative government within its member nations. Professors McGinnis and Movsesian refute this view. They argue that the WTO can be understood as a constitutive structure that, by reducing the power of protectionist interest groups, can simultaneously promote international trade and domestic democracy. Indeed, in promoting both free trade and accountable government, the WTO reflects many of the insights that inform our own Madisonian Constitution. Professors McGinnis and Movsesian reject recent proposals to grant the WTO regulatory authority, endorsing instead the WTO's limited adjudicative power …

Exercising The Right To Public Accommodations: The Debate Over Single-Sex Health Clubs, Miriam A. Cherry Jan 2000

Exercising The Right To Public Accommodations: The Debate Over Single-Sex Health Clubs, Miriam A. Cherry

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

Recently, the debate over single-sex health clubs gained national attention when a patent attorney, James Foster, sued for admission to Healthworks, a Massachusetts all-women's health club. One day in 1996, Foster entered the club, which was located close to his Boston condominium, and asked for a tour and an application for membership. The club employees, however, refused him a tour, informing him that Healthworks did not admit men. Shortly thereafter, Foster filed a discrimination claim with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination contending that Healthworks had violated the Massachusetts public accommodations statute. He won at the administrative hearing, and Healthworks …

American Lawyers And International Competence, Charlotte Ku, Christopher J. Borgen

Faculty Publications

Just over ten years ago, Germans tore down a wall that divided their country and the whole of Europe. Stepping through the hole in the Berlin Wall, they took the first steps towards the reunification of West and East Germany and the end of the Cold War. Today another wall is being torn down—that between purely domestic law and international law. Companies are engaged in international trade at ever increasing rates. Environmental degradation has proved to be a global problem that cannot be solved with uncoordinated local measures. Individuals worldwide are pressing their governments for the recognition of a common …

Sexuality And Civil Rights: Re-Imagining Anti-Discrimination Laws, Nan D. Hunter Jan 2000

Sexuality And Civil Rights: Re-Imagining Anti-Discrimination Laws, Nan D. Hunter

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this essay, I first describe the origins and current status of anti-discrimination laws that cover sexual orientation and/or gender identity. I examine the debates over whether existing laws are underutilized, and I analyze the variations in the structures of state and local laws that contribute to an unevenness in the patterns of utilization. These factors suggest that even persons living in states or local jurisdictions that already have anti-discrimination laws may lack meaningful mechanisms for redress. Part two raises the ante in my exploration of the relationship between sexuality and civil rights laws by asking whether there are ways …
