Redemption And Recovery: An Ethnographic Comparison Of Two Drug Rehabilitation Programs, A Faith Community And A Therapeutic Community, Daniel E. Hood Jan 2000

Redemption And Recovery: An Ethnographic Comparison Of Two Drug Rehabilitation Programs, A Faith Community And A Therapeutic Community, Daniel E. Hood

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This ethnography of long-term residential programs for drug users compares a therapeutic community (TC) with an evangelical Christian "training program." Using participant observation and life history interviews, it pursues three themes. The first is comparative and descriptive. It poses a basic similarity between the ideologically disparate programs. Parallels in program process and personal experience of "identity transformation" (conversion) are described. Despite the religious/secular divide, important similarities in anthropological assumptions are also identified. Contrary to earlier research, the singularity of the clientele is demonstrated. Other parallels include the ritual function of prayer and encounter, the centrality of selective biographical reconstruction, and …

Church Discipline And Grace, Stefan Radu Jan 2000

Church Discipline And Grace, Stefan Radu

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Local churches are in general confusion about the meaning, importance, and function of church discipline. Hence, this biblical task is mostly ignored, or even opposed by many as being judgmentalism. As a result, baptismal candidates are poorly prepared and sometimes members are allowed to continue in sinful habits. This study sought to research and present material about why and how the church ought to work with sinning believers.

Method. Based on a search of the Holy Scripture, the writings of Ellen G. White, and other theological literature, material for a seminar about church discipline and grace was produced. A …

A Hermeneutics Approach To Studying Agenda-Setting: The Postwar Education Agenda (1945-1998)., Jennifer Lynn Fisher Jan 2000

A Hermeneutics Approach To Studying Agenda-Setting: The Postwar Education Agenda (1945-1998)., Jennifer Lynn Fisher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study of bill introductions can broaden our understanding of how policy alternatives are formed by and for congressional actors. This agenda setting study builds on the work of Baumgartner and Jones (1993), King (1997), Kingdon (1989), Schiller (1995), Worsham (1997), and Wilkerson, Feeley, Schiereck, and Sue (1999). Specifically, the focus will be on education policymaking—an agenda that has ascended to higher status over the last fifty years. Three basic objectives will undergird the analysis. The first is to learn what the education agenda has been in order to understand more about where it is going. Second, is to understand …

"I'M Right There": Central Appalachian Women In Public School Leadership., Kathy L. Seelinger Jan 2000

"I'M Right There": Central Appalachian Women In Public School Leadership., Kathy L. Seelinger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite a deluge of national attention to equity issues, public school administration is still the domain of men. Research attention to women in leadership has done little to close the gender gap in superintendents' and secondary school principals' offices, perhaps because of its focus on successful men rather than on the women who hold these positions. Qualitative interviews examine seven central Appalachian women school leaders in light of feminist standpoint theory, focusing on the way the women enter leadership, articulate a personal construction of the leadership role, and negotiate the borders between their own constructions and the prevailing ones. Profiles …

The Establishment Of A Lay Evangelism School At The Ephesus Sda Church In Richmond, Virginia, Gene Michael Donaldson

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Sharing the good news is an imperative issued by the Supreme Commander, Jesus Christ for all who call Him Lord. Every member of the church is a minister with the responsibility to bring others to faith. The purpose of this study was to prepare a training program to equip lay persons in the Virginia area churches of the Allegheny East Conference on how to bring others to faith.

Bhakti: A Bridge To Philosophical Hindus, N. Sharath Babu Jan 2000

Bhakti: A Bridge To Philosophical Hindus, N. Sharath Babu

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Problem

The Christian presence has been in India for the last 2000 years and the Adventist presence has been in India for the last 105 years. Yet, the Christian population is only between 2-4 percent in a total population of about one billion in India. Most of the Christian converts are from the low caste and the tribals. Christians are accused of targeting only Dalits (untouchables) and tribals. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, advised Christians to direct conversion to those who can understand their message and not to the illiterate and downtrodden.

The Task

Using The Heritage Of The St. Thomas Christians To Develop An Outreach Strategy, Kunjunjukutty Yohannan Jan 2000

Using The Heritage Of The St. Thomas Christians To Develop An Outreach Strategy, Kunjunjukutty Yohannan

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The St. Thomas Christians in Kerala claim their spiritual heritage from Thomas the apostle. Yet they are not generally aware of a number of scriptural teachings including the seventh-day Sabbath, which Thomas and their forefathers observed. For the last one hundred years there has been no developed Seventh-day Adventist strategy to proclaim the full biblical message, which was their heritage, to this people group.

Findings

The St. Thomas Christians of Kerala, India, believe that Thomas the apostle took Christianity to India. Their very existence bears witness to it. Thomas is reported to have arrived in Kerala in A.D. 52. …

Protecting The Florida Keys: An Internet Gis/Ims Strategy For Benthic Habitat Management., Frank Crawford Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Technological advancements in the Internet particularly in multimedia and other visualization approaches generally pose great potential for Geographic Information Science (GISci). This potential brings with it both conceptual and operational issues that require consideration and collective, long-range planning in order to effectively implement the developing technologies. The relevant issues surrounding this adoption in the area of benthic habitat management are examined. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), and specifically Conch Reef, are used as the case study for this work with particular attention to geographic information systems, multimedia and Internet map servers, management issues, logistical requirements, data access and …

The Impact Of Age On Political Participation In West Virginia., Beth Laine Taylor Jan 2000

The Impact Of Age On Political Participation In West Virginia., Beth Laine Taylor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Political participation in the United States can take several distinct forms, reflecting numerous socioeconomic and demographic factors that determine patterns of civic engagement. Within West Virginia, the presence of a high proportion of aged citizens has led to interesting levels of involvement. Differing patterns of engagement between age groups can be explained with regard to the influence of life-cycle, generational and period (historical) effects. Analysis of survey data reveal that older individuals are more likely to participate in conventional political activities such as voting and letter writing to elected officials, but are less likely to participate in unconventional forms of …

The Correctional-Commercial Complex: An Examination Of Privatization Of The Us Prison System., Atsuko Maruono Jan 2000

The Correctional-Commercial Complex: An Examination Of Privatization Of The Us Prison System., Atsuko Maruono

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis analyses current spatial trends in the U.S. prison system, with a focus on the process of prison privatization. This study reviews the literature on trends in the US prison system, and maps the spatial distribution of public prisons, private prisons, and the trend to prison privatization. In addition, a case study of prison privatization in Texas is conducted. U.S. penal policy makers explain the need for privately run correctional facilities as a response to the “crisis” of the prison system, in particular the impact of overcrowding. However, the research results indicate that the location of private prisons have …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Air is known to contain a variety of airborne matter that is considered as potential health hazards. These particles if ingested/inhaled have long term effects on the health of human beings. The best technique to prevent these harmful particles from reaching the respiratory tract is physical interception. Personal protective equipment such as respiratory filters are used extensively to administer clean air of exceptional quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of commercially available respirator filters subjected to extremely heavy loading conditions. Several commercially available brands of P-100 and P-95 particulate filters were tested. The test conditions …

Whole-Body Vibration And The Lower Back: The Effect Of Whole-Body Vibration On Pain In The Lower Back., Erik W. Gregory Jan 2000

Whole-Body Vibration And The Lower Back: The Effect Of Whole-Body Vibration On Pain In The Lower Back., Erik W. Gregory

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study utilized six subjects from the West Virginia University Motor pool, whose exposure to whole-body vibrations were measured and reported as root mean squared (r.m.s.) values in accordance with ISO standard 2631. Each subject completed a questionnaire regarding their general health, and specifically whether they experienced low back pain, and if so, the extent and severity of this pain. It was expected that the individuals subjected to the highest vibration levels would tend to report LBP, with severity of pain increasing with the intensity of exposure. This study did not support that belief. However, it may be that chronic …
