Wavelet-Based Testing For Serial Correlation Of Unknown Form In Panel Models, Chihwa Kao Jan 2000

Wavelet-Based Testing For Serial Correlation Of Unknown Form In Panel Models, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

Wavelet analysis is a new mathematical tool developed as a unified field of science over the last decade. As spatially adaptive analytic tools, wavelets are useful for capturing serial correlation where the spectrum has peaks or kinks, as can arise from persistent/strong dependence, seasonality or use of seasonal data such as quarterly and monthly data, business cycles, and other kinds of periodicity. This paper proposes a new class of wavelet-based tests for serial correlation of unknown form in the estimated residuals of an error component model, where the error components can be one-way or two-way, the individual and time effects …

How Well Can We Track Cohabitation Using The Sipp? A Consideration Of Direct And Inferred Measures, Reagan Anne Baughman, Stacy Dickert-Conlin, Scott Houser Jan 2000

How Well Can We Track Cohabitation Using The Sipp? A Consideration Of Direct And Inferred Measures, Reagan Anne Baughman, Stacy Dickert-Conlin, Scott Houser

Center for Policy Research

Cohabitation is an alternative to marriage and to living independently for an increasing number of Americans. Despite this fact, research exploring links between living arrangements and economic behavior is limited by a lack of data that explicitly identify cohabiting couples. To aid researchers in using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) rich data for cohabitation issues, our paper considers direct and inferred measures of cohabitation. Our findings suggest that: (1) the best inferred measures in pre-1966 SIPP depends upon a researcher's goals, and (2) the SIPP counts a larger number of cohabiting couples than the widely used CPS.

Microdata Panel Data And Public Policy: National And Cross-National Perspectives, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Harvey S. Rosen, Mark Rider Jan 2000

Microdata Panel Data And Public Policy: National And Cross-National Perspectives, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Harvey S. Rosen, Mark Rider

Center for Policy Research

This paper investigates the effect of entrepreneurs' personal income tax situations on the growth rate of their enterprises. We analyze the personal income tax returns of a large number of sole proprietors before and after the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and determine how the substantial reductions in marginal tax rates associated with that law affected the growth of their firms as measured by gross receipts. We find that individual income taxes exert a statistically and quantitatively significant influence on firm growth rates. Raising the sole proprietor's tax price (one minus the marginal tax rate) by 10 percent increases receipts …

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Why Do Real Estate Agents Withhold Available Houses From Black Customers?, Jan Ondrich, John Yinger, Stephen Ross Jan 2000

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Why Do Real Estate Agents Withhold Available Houses From Black Customers?, Jan Ondrich, John Yinger, Stephen Ross

Center for Policy Research

This paper develops a new approach to testing hypotheses about the causes of discrimination in housing sales. We follow previous research by using data from fair housing audits, a matched-pair technique for comparing the treatment of equally qualified black and white home buyers. Our contribution is to shift the focus from differences in the treatment of teammates during an audit to agent decisions concerning an individual housing unit. Our sample consists of all units seen by either a black of a white auditor in the 1989 national Housing Discrimination Study. We estimate a multinomial logit model to explain a real …

Microdata Panel Data And Public Policy: National And Cross-National Perspectives, Richard V. Burkhauser Jan 2000

Microdata Panel Data And Public Policy: National And Cross-National Perspectives, Richard V. Burkhauser

Center for Policy Research

This paper focuses on the movement of data-based social policy analysis from a single-country cross-section frame to a multi-country panel frame. It provides examples of policy insights this movement to panel data has permitted, both with respect to economic well-being and behavior--using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), the British Household Panel Study (BHPS), the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP), and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). It also suggests fruitful areas for future panel data-based policy research.

Chronic Illness And Health Insurance-Related Job Lock, Kevin T. Stroupe, Eleanor D. Kinney, Thomas J. Kniesner Jan 2000

Chronic Illness And Health Insurance-Related Job Lock, Kevin T. Stroupe, Eleanor D. Kinney, Thomas J. Kniesner

Center for Policy Research

We examine job duration patterns for evidence of health insurance-related job lock among chronically ill workers or workers with a chronically ill family member. Using Cox proportional hazard models, we allow for more general insurance effects than in the existing literature to indicate the impact of health insurance and health status on workers' job durations. We use data for workers in Indiana predating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to examine the potential impact of HIPAA on job mobility. Chronic illness reduced job mobility by about 40 percent among the workers in our sample who relied on their …

The Impact Of Hospital Quality-Related Practices On Health Outcomes, Deborah A. Freund, Frank R. Lichtenberg Jan 2000

The Impact Of Hospital Quality-Related Practices On Health Outcomes, Deborah A. Freund, Frank R. Lichtenberg

Center for Policy Research

In this paper we analyze the cross-sectional relationship between hospital quality scores calculated by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and risk-adjusted indicators of outcomes and quality--mortality, rates of surgical/medical misadventures, adverse drug reactions, and length of stay--calculated from Nationwide Inpatient Sample discharge records. The results suggest that greater adherence to JCAHO accreditation standards is not associated with reduced mortality or lower probability of avoidable hospital or physician-caused adverse outcomes. Other hospital characteristics, such as teaching/non-teaching and urban/rural status, also exhibit little or no correlation with risk-adjusted survival and adverse-event probabilities.

Pharmaceuticals And The Elderly: A Comparative Analysis, Deborah A. Freund, Don Wilson, Grant D. Reeher, Bernie O'Brien Jan 2000

Pharmaceuticals And The Elderly: A Comparative Analysis, Deborah A. Freund, Don Wilson, Grant D. Reeher, Bernie O'Brien

Center for Policy Research

This paper compares and contrasts outpatient pharmaceutical policies for the elderly in seven OECD nations: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Each country is facing an increasing financial burden due to rapidly growing numbers of elderly citizens, in number and as a percentage of population, and rising drug costs. As a result, they are struggling to balance varying levels of commitment to providing drugs for the elderly with the need to contain costs. Although each country's healthcare system is unique, the methods that each country is using to control rising pharmaceutical costs are …

Back To The Future: A Search For Economic Progress Or Roots? A Comparison Of Experiences Between African American Entrepreneurs In South Africa And In The United States, Melinda Dowell Harris

Student Scholarship

This study addresses some of the challenges and opportunities that African Americans encounter in their quest for economic and personal progress. Further, the study implies that minority entrepreneurs are a special breed of entrepreneur, combining personal, professional, and financial success with that of shared-identity peers. African American entrepreneurs' views of success transcend personal financial gain to incorporate economic and civic progress with those with whom they share identity. Twenty African American entrepreneurs in South Africa and in the United States were interviewed. These individuals were identified through various local and government agencies, as well as through individuals who are in …

A Marketing Research Study For Snowbird / Prepared By Wasatch Marketing Research, Robert Dean, Chelsea Green, Todd Hillstead, Sharah Smith

Student Works

Snowbird resort offers year-round activities catering to the winter and summer recreationalists. As part of its service, Snowbird has 12 restaurants that provide a variety of food and atmospheres that resort patrons can choose from. Snowbird seeks to increase its revenues by finding ways to attract more guests to any of its 12 restaurants. Snowbird and WMR identified three target groups from which data could be collected. These three groups were the following: condominium owners/timeshare guests, rental guests, and skier/rider. Both parties set research objectives and then questionnaires were created to obtain the desired data from the three target groups. …

Effect Of Increasing Dietary Corn Silage On Performance, Digestibility And Nitrogen Mass Balance In The Feedlot, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Ryan Mass Jan 2000

Effect Of Increasing Dietary Corn Silage On Performance, Digestibility And Nitrogen Mass Balance In The Feedlot, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton, Ryan Mass

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Three dietary corn silage levels (15, 30, and 45% of diet DM) were evaluated in corn finishing diets fed to calves through the winter/spring and yearlings during the summer to determine effects on performance and nitrogen mass balance in feedlot. Yearling gains decreased quadratically with increasing corn silage; however, N and OM removed in manure was greatest for the 30% silage treatment. Calf gains decreased linearly as silage increased; however, N and OM removed in manure was greatest for the 45% silage treatment. Increasing dietary corn silage resulted in decreased gains but did influence manure N with no effect on …

Criminal And Civil Parental Liability Statutes: Would They Have Saved The 15 Who Died At Columbine?, Eric P. Ebenstein Jan 2000

Criminal And Civil Parental Liability Statutes: Would They Have Saved The 15 Who Died At Columbine?, Eric P. Ebenstein

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that current parental liability statutes in the United States are insufficient to hold parents accountable for their children's violent acts, such as the Columbine High School massacre. It advocates for strengthening these laws, particularly by adopting a negligence standard, to incentivize parents to monitor their children's activities more effectively and prevent such tragedies.

Parental Liability And The Criminal Misconduct Of Children In The Wake Of An Unregulated Internet: Who Should Pay?, Katherine R. Richardson Jan 2000

Parental Liability And The Criminal Misconduct Of Children In The Wake Of An Unregulated Internet: Who Should Pay?, Katherine R. Richardson

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the legal and practical challenges of holding parents accountable for their children's criminal acts, particularly when influenced by internet content. It questions the effectiveness of parental liability laws and highlights the tension between child protection, parental rights, and internet regulation. While acknowledging the complexity of these issues, the note suggests that parental liability should only apply when a clear causal link exists between negligence and harm, though proving such a link is legally challenging. Ultimately, the analysis advocates for a nuanced approach to balancing these competing interests.

Liberal Discovery Of Non-Party Records: In Defense Of The Defense, Melissa E. Rosenthal Jan 2000

Liberal Discovery Of Non-Party Records: In Defense Of The Defense, Melissa E. Rosenthal

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note advocates for the liberal discovery of nonparty records, such as IQ test results and medical records, in lead paint poisoning cases in New York. It argues that allowing such discovery aligns with the state's broad discovery policies under CPLR 3101(a) and promotes fairness and efficiency in litigation. The author contends that the current per se ban on discovering these records is inconsistent and unfair, particularly for defendants in the First Department, where such discovery is prohibited. The analysis emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that considers relevance, privacy, and the potential for alternative causation in determining admissibility.

The Bible As One Story: Images As The Holy Spirit's Device For Making Scripture God's Word Written, Robert Farrar Capon Jan 2000

The Bible As One Story: Images As The Holy Spirit's Device For Making Scripture God's Word Written, Robert Farrar Capon

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

My approach to scripture, you probably have guessed, is not that of someone trained by the biblical scholarship critical fellowship. I studied under them as you all did, too. I managed not to think too much about them, because I didn't think much of them. When I was in seminary a number of us got together and wrote a series of four-line doggerel verses on the result of biblical criticism as we were receiving it when applied to the scriptures. I can only remember one of those stanzas: Of wilderness wanderings, there'd not be so many; of Abraham's stories, …

Emergency Shelters As Empowering Settings For Young Women: A Study Of Process And Outcomes, Theresa Bailey Jan 2000

Emergency Shelters As Empowering Settings For Young Women: A Study Of Process And Outcomes, Theresa Bailey

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study used a participatory approach to examine the process and outcomes for young women who entered an emergency shelter. The purpose of this study was to explore differences and similarities between young women from family of origin and young women with child welfare placement experience when they entered the shelter and then again three months later. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. In the quantitative component a series of two factor mixed ANOVA’ s, t-tests, and regressions were conducted on 40 initial interviews and 30 follow-up interviews. The results of these statistical analyses demonstrated that young women from …
