Genetic Diversity Of Salmonella Typhi, Satheesh Nair Jan 2000

Genetic Diversity Of Salmonella Typhi, Satheesh Nair

Student Works (2000-2009)

Typhoid fever is a unique human septemic infection caused by Salmonella typhi. Typhoid fever is still an important public health problem in many developing countries. The continuing presence of the disease in endemic areas and emergence of multidrug- resistant strains in many developing countries as well as the increasing reports from developed countries has renewed the interest to better understand the epidemiology of typhoid fever and some aspects of its pathogenesis. Characterization of S. typhi strains in different epidemiological settings depends largely on the utility of highly precise molecular typing tools. A convenient, versatile and safe method for preparing bacterial …

Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Captopril And Its Application In Pharmacokinetic Studies In Healthy Subjects, Zamri Chik Jan 2000

Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Captopril And Its Application In Pharmacokinetic Studies In Healthy Subjects, Zamri Chik

Student Works (2000-2009)

Captopril is a highly specific competitive inhibitor of the angiotensin-convening enzyme (ACE). This enzyme converts angiotensin I, a relatively inactive decapeptide, to angiotensin II , a potent endogenous vasoconstrictor substance. Captopril is widely used for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. This drug, which contains a sulphydryl group binds readily to albumin and to other plasma proteins. Captopril is unstable in blood and plasma ex vivo because of the reactivity of sulphydryl group which results in oxidation and rapid formation of disulphides. Therefore a fixative or a stabiliser must be added to each blood sample immediately following collection. …

Clinical Waste Management In The Northern States Of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah And Sarawak, Abdul Hai Akbar Ali Jan 2000

Clinical Waste Management In The Northern States Of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah And Sarawak, Abdul Hai Akbar Ali

Student Works (2000-2009)

Clinical waste management and disposal methods are quite unique due to their infectious and harmful nature. Unlike municipal waste, clinical waste is pathogenic which jeopardizes the biotic community including human beings, if not quelled of its pathogenic effect.. However, shortcomings or drawbacks are still possible in areas of source separation. inappropriate containment and labeling. Improper incineration may also lead to incomplete combustion ultimately leading to air pollution. Though existing system of clinical waste disposal and management in Malaysia seem adequate, still efficient and cost effective mechanisms are needed. The focus of this research is to survey and study the administrative …

Whole Body Momentum During Gait: A Preliminary Study Of Non-Fallers And Frequent Fallers, Guy G. Simoneau, David E. Krebs

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

The importance of momentum in compensating for elderly individua ls ' strength deficits to achieve activities of daily living. such as rising from a chair ha.!o been demonstrated in earlier studies. Here we present a case control study of three healthy "non-fallers" and two "frequent fallers," All 5 elders were community-living and were tested in the gai l laboratory. A four-camera Selspot system was used to obtain whole-body momentum from an 11-segment kinematic model. Ground reaction forces and kinematics were used 10 calculate lower extremity join! moments. With the exception of the whole-body's angular momentum about the vertical axis, linear …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Field trials were conducted in Kenya with 'Nakyetengu', an East African highland banana cultivar (AAA-EA), highly susceptible to banana pests. Regardless of soil fertility levels, incorporation around the plant base of powdered neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) seed or cake at 60-100 g/mat at 4-month intervals, gave better control of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar), and of parasitic nematodes, than that achieved with soil application of Furadan 5G (carbofuran) at 60 g/mat at 6-month intervals. Compared with untreated control, fruit yield in most of the neem treatments was significantly higher, particularly during the second cycle of crop production. Neem …

The violence went on for nine months. . . . By the end, the beatings were happening weekly, sometimes three times a week. . . . It always went on in front of the kids. . . . My daughter still asks, 'Why'd papa try to break your arms and legs?'. . . I left France when I realized after nine months that there was nothing I could do there to stop the violence.

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

This study examines the impact of unfavorable media coverage on the stock market prices of major food companies, an issue of increasing importance to the food industry. The study focuses on the 16 April 1996 Oprah Winfrey Show, a popular television program that raised questions about the safety of the U.S. beef supply. The show resulted in considerable controversy, and some cattle feeders blamed the show for a drop in cattle prices. The focus of this study is on the impact of the program at other stages of the food system. We examined the stock returns of two major beef …
