The Discipline Of Communication In Higher Education: Mutually Defining And Reciprocal Relationships, James W. Chesebro, David W. Worley
The Discipline Of Communication In Higher Education: Mutually Defining And Reciprocal Relationships, James W. Chesebro, David W. Worley
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article discusses the status of communication studies in higher education. Communication and the discipline of communication are partially defined by the ways in which communication principles and strategies are identified and applied in college and university environments. How administrators and colleagues in other departments conceive of and utilize communication principles and strategies provide feedback to us, revealing their conceptions, attitudes, and beliefs about what communication is and what the study and use of communication involves. These applied communication uses constitute part of the meaning that communication possesses within a college or university environment. Using traditions as academic standards, virtually …

Defining The Field: Revisiting The Aca 1995 Definition Of Communication Studies, Charles J. Korn, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Don M. Boileau
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article deals with the problem of defining communication studies in higher education. In 1995, the Association for Communication Administration (ACA) convened a summer conference that produced a two-sentence definition of the field of communication. More than 100 conferees voted their unanimous approval of the definition, which was then disseminated nationally and used by communication scholar/teachers for a multiplicity of purposes. Given the potential utility of that definition and the expansion of communication studies since 1995, the present study surveyed ACA's current members to determine whether they are aware the definition exists, how they have used it, and the extent …
Information Utility, Reader Interest, Publication Rating And Student Newspaper Readership, Carolyn Lin
Information Utility, Reader Interest, Publication Rating And Student Newspaper Readership, Carolyn Lin
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article investigates student motivations for reading a college student paper, including evaluations of performance and content preferences. The declining interest in newspaper readership, particularly among college-age readers has attracted concern among scholars in recent years. In a democracy founded on freedom of the press, fewer than 40% of adults today under the age of 30 subscribe to a paper. This suggests that time spent with newspapers continues to decline even as new media use accounts for the bulk of audience leisure.

Automatic Modeling Of Knee-Joint Motion For The Virtual Reality Dynamic Anatomy (Vrda) Tool, Yohan Baillot, Jannick P. Rolland, Kuo-Chi Lin, Donna L. Wright
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
This paper presents a method and algorithms for automatic modeling of anatomical joint motion. The method relies on collision detection to achieve stable positions and orientations of the knee joint by evaluating the relative motion of the tibia with respect to the femur (for example, flexion-extension). The stable positions then become the basis for a look-up table employed in the animation of the joint. The strength of this method lies in its robustness to animate any normal anatomical joint. It is also expandable to other anatomical joints given a set of kinematic constraints for the joint type as well as …
Identification Of Surface Chemical Functional Groups Correlated To Failure Of Reverse Osmosis Polymeric Membranes, Sharon Beverly, Sudipta Seal, Seungkwan Hong
Identification Of Surface Chemical Functional Groups Correlated To Failure Of Reverse Osmosis Polymeric Membranes, Sharon Beverly, Sudipta Seal, Seungkwan Hong
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The goal of this study is to identify the causes of membrane failure observed during a 15-month operation of a low pressure reverse osmosis (RO) membrane pilot plant to treat a highly organic surface water from the Hillsborough River in Tampa, Florida, using various surface analytical techniques. Three different commercial RO membranes, made of cellulose acetate or polyamide, were used in this pilot study, and all of these membranes showed performance deterioration presumably due to membrane fouling and degradation at given experimental conditions. In order to elucidate the mechanisms of membrane failure, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS), …
Association Of Beta 1 Integrin With Focal Adhesion Kinase And Paxillin In Differentiating Schwann Cells, Li-Mei Chen, Debora Bailey, Cristina Fernandez-Valle
Association Of Beta 1 Integrin With Focal Adhesion Kinase And Paxillin In Differentiating Schwann Cells, Li-Mei Chen, Debora Bailey, Cristina Fernandez-Valle
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Schwann cells (SCs) differentiate into a myelinating cell when simultaneously adhering to an axon destined for myelination and basal lamina. We are interested in defining the signaling pathway activated by basal lamina. Using SC/sensory neuron (N) cocultures, we identified beta 1 integrin and F-actin as components of a pathway leading to myelin gene expression and myelination (Fernandez-Valle et al., 1994, 1997). Here, we show that focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and paxillin are constitutively expressed by SCs contacting axons in the absence of basal lamina. Tyrosine phosphorylation of FAK and paxillin increases as SCs form basal lamina and differentiate. FAK and …

Activation Of A Plasmodium Falciparum Cdc2-Related Kinase By Heterologous P25 And Cyclin H - Functional Characterization Of A P. Falciparum Cyclin Homologue, Karien Le Roch, Claude Sestier, Dominique Dorin, Norman Waters, Barbara Kappes, Debopan Chakrabarti, Laurent Meijer, Christina Doerig
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Several Plasmodium falciparum genes encoding cdc2-related protein kinases have been identified, but the modalities of their regulation remains largely unexplored. Zn the present study, we investigated the regulation in vitro of PfPK5, a putative homologue of Cdk1 (cdc2) in P. falciparum. We show that (i) PfPK5 is efficiently activated by heterologous (human) cyclin H and p25, a cyclin-like molecule that specifically activates human Cdk5; (ii) the activated enzyme can be inhibited by chemical Cdk inhibitors; (iii) Pfmrk, a putative P. falciparum homologue of the Cdk-activating kinase, does neither activate nor phosphorylate PfPK5; and (iv) PfPK5 is able to autophosphorylate in …
Wide-Angle, Off-Axis, See-Through Head-Mounted Display, Jannick P. Rolland
Wide-Angle, Off-Axis, See-Through Head-Mounted Display, Jannick P. Rolland
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
A 60-deg-field-of-view optical see-through head-mounted display (HMD) using off-axis optics has been designed for 3-D medical imaging visualization. Two basic on-axis optical design concepts for see-though HMDs are reviewed first, to motivate the design of an off-axis optical form. An off-axis design is then presented. Because HMDs are typically designed from the pupil of the eye to the miniature display, it is common to assess final performance according to the display characteristics. Such analysis, however, does not provide information that is easily translated into task-based performance metric. Therefore, we present an analysis of the performance of the design from a …
Optical Versus Video See-Through Mead-Mounted Displays In Medical Visualization, Jannick P. Rolland, Henry Fuchs
Optical Versus Video See-Through Mead-Mounted Displays In Medical Visualization, Jannick P. Rolland, Henry Fuchs
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We compare two technological approaches to augmented reality for 3-D medical visualization: optical and video see-through devices. We provide a context to discuss the technology by reviewing several medical applications of augmented-reality research efforts driven by real needs in the medical field, both in the United States and in Europe. We then discuss the issues for each approach, optical versus video, from both a technology and human-factor point of view. Finally, we point to potentially promising future developments of such devices including eye tracking and multifocus planes capabilities, as well as hybrid optical/video technology.

"Happy Days Are Here Again": Cocoa Farmers, Middlemen Traders And The Structural Adjustment Program In Southwestern Nigeria, 1986-1990s, Ezekiel Ayodele Walker
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
This article examines the impact of the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) that was installed by the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida in 1986 on the cocoa economy of southwestern Nigeria. The structural adjustment program resulted in the dissolution of the Cocoa Board. The scrapping of the Cocoa Board engendered significant changes in the marketing of cocoa, as Nigerian, and non-Nigerian exporters (Syrians and Lebanese) sought to gain control of the cocoa trade. This resulted in a price war that led to a monumental increase in the price of cocoa. The cocoa boom from 1987 to 1988 was compounded by the …
Parameters Influencing Sediments Resuspension And The Link To Sorption Of Inorganic Compounds, Eid A. Alkhatib, Keith Castor
Parameters Influencing Sediments Resuspension And The Link To Sorption Of Inorganic Compounds, Eid A. Alkhatib, Keith Castor
Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications
In the aquatic environment, the accumulation of chemicalcontaminants by sediments poses a potential threat to endemiclife forms and drinking water resources. Trace metals such asCd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and toxic organic compounds, are among awide variety of contaminants having an affinity for sediments. In this study, experiments were performed simulating sedimentresuspension in the lower Housatonic River, Connecticut, using aParticle Entrainment Simulator. Analyses of grain sizedistributions, porosities and total organic contents of thesediments suggested that these parameters influence theredistribution and entrainment of settleable solids in the watercolumn. These findings were established by evaluating the impactof one parameter on sediment resuspension as …
A Comparison Of Direct Methods For Valuing Environmental Amenities: A Case Study Of The White Mountain National Forest, Wendy Harper
A Comparison Of Direct Methods For Valuing Environmental Amenities: A Case Study Of The White Mountain National Forest, Wendy Harper
Doctoral Dissertations
New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest is well known for its mountain scenery as well as its many recreational opportunities. Upcoming changes in the electric utility industry may work to change the average level of visibility in the White Mountain National Forest. While the contingent valuation method has been extensively used to value public goods (in instances such as the case above), some view the procedure with skepticism. As a result, alternative methods such as conjoint analysis have been receiving more attention. This dissertation presents the results of a face-to-face survey that attempted to directly compare conjoint analysis and contingent …
Internet Use And Its Relation To Mental And Physical Health Among Older Adults, Michael Anthony Mangan
Internet Use And Its Relation To Mental And Physical Health Among Older Adults, Michael Anthony Mangan
Doctoral Dissertations
This exploratory study examined relations between frequency of Internet use among adults 65 and older and perceptions of social support and personal control. Additionally, standard multiple regression procedures were employed to assess the usefulness of frequency of Internet use, perceived social support, and perceived control as predictors of mental and physical health. Results were that frequency of Internet use was uncorrelated with perceptions of social support and personal control and was not predictive of mental or physical health. Perceived social support and perceived control emerged as predictors of mental and physical health. Recommendations for future research that refines measurement of …
The Moses Illusion In Reading Comprehension, Anne E. Cook
The Moses Illusion In Reading Comprehension, Anne E. Cook
Doctoral Dissertations
The Moses Illusion refers to participants' failure to detect distortions in questions such as, "How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark?" although it was actually Noah's Ark. The Illusion is thought to depend on the semantic relation between the distorted term (e.g., Moses) and the correct term (e.g., Noah). The Illusion literature has been limited mostly to investigations of semantic memory and to a single-question format. The experiments reported in this dissertation examined whether the Illusion extends to longer passages of text and whether it is influenced by the presence of the correct term in …
Finite Element Modeling Of Tidal Flow And Bed -Load Transport In The Great Bay Estuarine System, New Hampshire, Ata Bilgili
Finite Element Modeling Of Tidal Flow And Bed -Load Transport In The Great Bay Estuarine System, New Hampshire, Ata Bilgili
Doctoral Dissertations
Current, sea level and bed-load transport are investigated in the Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire---a shallow, well-mixed system with low freshwater input. Main channel tidal currents are over 2 m/sec, and its dynamic balance is dominated by the pressure gradient and bottom friction. Current and sea level forced by the M2, M4, M6 tides at the estuary mouth are simulated by two numerical models---a three-dimensional, harmonic model that solves the linearized shallow water equations (FUNDY5); and a vertically averaged, time stepping, non-linear model (ADAM). ADAM makes use of a kinematic assumption (that is, the local and advective accelerations are neglected) …
Exploring Other Worlds: Margaret Fox, Elisha Kane, And The Antebellum Culture Of Curiosity, David Alexander Chapin
Exploring Other Worlds: Margaret Fox, Elisha Kane, And The Antebellum Culture Of Curiosity, David Alexander Chapin
Doctoral Dissertations
Antebellum Americans had a strong interest in the unknown, which manifested itself simultaneously in highbrow, middlebrow, and lowbrow culture. Venues such as scientific institutions, lyceums, lecture halls, the "penny-press," and the dime-museum all catered to American curiosity. Exploring Other Worlds examines this "culture of curiosity," arguing that curiosity was a defining trait of antebellum America, transcending many of the boundaries we often associate with the era. Curiosity promoted intellectual interest in science, but it also led to the sensationalism of modern commercial popular culture.
The inter-related lives of Elisha Kane and Margaret Fox demonstrate this thesis. Kane was America's first …
Shelley And The Nature Of Nonviolence, William James Stroup
Shelley And The Nature Of Nonviolence, William James Stroup
Doctoral Dissertations
This is a study of the English Romantic poet and essayist Percy Bysshe Shelley's conception of the role and function of humans in the natural world, and of his influence on later reformers. Shelley's long poems Queen Mab, Laon and Cythna, and Prometheus Unbound are discussed as a trilogy where his themes of political nonviolence and protoecological awareness became integrated; also discussed at length are Mont Blanc, The Mask of Anarchy, and The Triumph of Life. The legacy of Shelley's poetry and ideas is discussed through two key figures who met in the 1880s: the now obscure Shelleyan and animal …

On The Quest For Economic *Growth And Development: The Developing World, The Failures Based On Physical Capital Accumulation And International Rescuers, And The Emergence Of A New Perspective, Augusto Marcos Carvalho De. Sena
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis critically reviews the literature on economic growth and development focusing on the interconnections, strengthens and weaknesses of both branches. Questions arise if growth and development models have been of any relevance to developing countries. The experience with International Financial Institutions (IFIs), such as the World Bank and the IMF, is also focused on to corroborate the assertion that the alternative answer based on stabilization-structural adjustments, sponsored by these agencies, has not been useful as a reasonable way to solve the most prominent problems of developing countries. It is concluded that both the World Bank and the IMF recipes …
Nitrated Poly(4 -Hydroxystyrene) Microspheres For Optical Ph And Potassium Ion Sensing Based On Turbidity Changes Accompanying Polymer Sweller, Hongming Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
Porous poly(4-acetoxystyrene) swellable microspheres with diameters approximately 1∼2 mum were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization. Toluene was used as the porogenic solvent and divinylbenzene was used as the crosslinker. The seed particles with diameters approximately 0.5∼1 mum were prepared by dispersion polymerization without adding porogenic solvent and crosslinker. Functionality was introduced by two derivatization reactions, hydrolysis and nitration, to form nitrated poly(4-hydroxystyrene). These polymer microspheres swell at high pH due to the deprotonation of the hydroxyl group on the polymer backbone. Swelling is accompanied by an increase in water content which causes the polymer refractive index to decrease. These microspheres, …

Tuned In: Television And The Teaching Of Writing, Bronwyn Thomas Williams
Doctoral Dissertations
College writing teachers often consider the reading and writing experiences students have had in elementary and high school classes as their only relevant discursive influences. When they do so they risk ignoring what is perhaps the most powerful and ubiquitous form of public discourse and communication in our society: television. This dissertation explores how the pervasive discourse of popular culture on television influences the ways in which incoming college students perceive and engage in writing and reading when they enter a first-year composition course. Through interviews with students and observations of them watching television, I have studied the skills students …
