Outbreaks Of Enterovirus 71 Infection, Sazaly Abubakar, Y.F. Chan, S.K. Lam, M. Ho, J.R. Wang, S.R. Shih

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The outbreak of enterovirus 71 infection in Taiwan, reported by Ho et al. (Sept. 23 issue), 1 occurred almost a year after the outbreak in Malaysia. Though both outbreaks occurred in Asia and both involved large numbers of deaths, it was not known whether the two outbreaks were related. We studied the nucleotide sequence and secondary RNA structure of some of the isolates, using the sequence of the 5' untranslated region (UTR). Enterovirus 71 isolates from patients in Singapore (seven isolates), Taiwan (two isolates), and Japan (one isolate) were examined and compared with those previously reported in Malaysia 2,3 or …

Field Evaluation Of Ultrasound Enhancement Of Permeable Treatment Walls, Aamod Sudhakar Sonawane Jan 2000

Field Evaluation Of Ultrasound Enhancement Of Permeable Treatment Walls, Aamod Sudhakar Sonawane

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to demonstrate the application of ultrasound to field sites having problems with precipitation build up and corrosion. PTW s are passive reactive walls containing zero-valent iron metal for in-situ remediation of contaminated groundwater. However, loss of reactivity over time due to build up of corrosion and other precipitates on the iron surface is a major concern. Ultrasound energy has been established as an effective tool for revitalizing iron surface. This research applied ultrasound energy to a zero-valent iron wall constructed below the ground surface to remove precipitates and iron corrosion, increasing iron reactivity. Two …

Early intervention for children with developmental disabilities or delays has become an important topic in the fields of education and psychology. Equally as important are the effects on children who are typically developing if one or more of their siblings is a child with a disability. Particularly of interest in this study was the level of externalizing behavior displayed by the typically developing siblings of children who have disabilities; This study compared the externalizing behavior (measured by the CBCL) of 16 siblings of children who have developmental disabilities with the externalizing behavior of 14 siblings of children who are typically …

Africanized Honey Bee Colonization In The Human Domain: Issues Of Environmental Anthropology In Southern Nevada, Daniel Edward Lebas Jan 2000

Africanized Honey Bee Colonization In The Human Domain: Issues Of Environmental Anthropology In Southern Nevada, Daniel Edward Lebas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Environmental anthropology seeks to identify issues and propose resolutions when humans are directly affected by environmental consequences or indirectly by policies that may marginalize the concerns of certain populations. Africanized Honey Bees created both environmental and policy consequences in southern Nevada. Identification of the issues was accomplished with literature review, participant observation, informal interview, and conferencing with academic and agency officials related to the human/bee problem. The controversy in risk assessment has implications for urban residents in southern Nevada. Both agricultural and urban environments may be economically and politically impacted by the colonization of feral Africanized Honey Bees. Urban populations …

Tomorrow Never Dies: The Protection Of Fictional Characters Under The Federal Trademark Dilution Act, Kristen Knudsen Jan 2000

Tomorrow Never Dies: The Protection Of Fictional Characters Under The Federal Trademark Dilution Act, Kristen Knudsen

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

A number of different protections are available for fictional characters under intellectual property law. These have traditionally included copyright, trademark, and unfair competition, or some combination thereof. Another avenue of protection can be found in state dilution statutes, which prohibit unauthorized uses of characters that could harm their reputations, such as by "blurring" their ability to indicate one source, or by "tarnishing" their commercial value. This harm may occur even where there is no likelihood of public confusion, and even where the use is on a noncompeting good. Many commentators have criticized state dilution theories, however, as contravening the purposes …

Employment Discrimination, Stewart J. Schwab Jan 2000

Employment Discrimination, Stewart J. Schwab

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This article first parses the multiple overlapping definitions of discrimination, including distinctions between group and individual discrimination and between segregation and discrimination in pay. The article then summarizes the major economic models of discrimination, particularly Becker’s taste-for-discrimination model and statistical-discrimination models, as well as sorting the status-production models. The discussion focuses on the conditions under which markets will tend to eliminate discrimination, noting that this occurs in a more limited range of situations than commonly recognized. The article next surveys the economic role of anti-discrimination laws, evaluating arguments that the law speeds the journey to a non-discriminatory equilibrium and that …

An Investigation Of Intra -Strategic Group Profiles, Performance And Reputation., Tamela Dawn Ferguson Jan 2000

An Investigation Of Intra -Strategic Group Profiles, Performance And Reputation., Tamela Dawn Ferguson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current strategic group research generally provides collectively meaningful assessments of strategic group averages or median-based profiles. While this approach facilitates inter-group contrasts and performance predictions, potentially valuable information contained in intra-group differences (i.e., core-periphery-fringe zones) typically is overlooked. This multi-study research adopts a more fine-grained approach to strategic group analysis by investigating intra-group competitive profile and performance differences across such zones, both within and across groups. Study I of this series identifies intra-strategic group zones that differ in strategic competitive profile and performance. Study II assesses how strategic groups and related intra-group zones might change over time, the stability of …

Behavioral Outcome Of Preschoolers Exposed Prenatally To Cocaine: The Role Of The Caregiving Environment., Veronica L. Haynes Jan 2000

Behavioral Outcome Of Preschoolers Exposed Prenatally To Cocaine: The Role Of The Caregiving Environment., Veronica L. Haynes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluated the long-term effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on child behavioral outcome at age 5 years, while considering the influence of the postnatal caregiving environment indicated by maternal drug use, maternal psychological functioning, and parenting quality. Behavioral outcome was measured by parent-reported behavior problems on the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. Subjects were 210 preschoolers (107 cocaine-exposed and 103 nondrug-exposed) and their biological mothers drawn from a larger cohort of mother-child pairs enrolled at birth in a longitudinal study evaluating the neurodevelopmental outcomes of children prenatally exposed to cocaine. The relationships among prenatal cocaine exposure, maternal adaptation (i.e., maternal …

The Early Local And Regional Immune Response To Recall Inoculations Of Mycobacterium Leprae In The Skin Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta)., Thomas Xavier D Lemarchand Jan 2000

The Early Local And Regional Immune Response To Recall Inoculations Of Mycobacterium Leprae In The Skin Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta)., Thomas Xavier D Lemarchand

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Epidemiological studies have failed to show any important impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and disease on leprosy, in contrast to the well documented increase in incidence and morbidity with other mycobacteria in these patients, notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The early events following exposure and repeated exposure to Mycobacterium leprae (ML) have not still been studied. Previous studies of first inoculations of ML in the skin of rhesus monkeys have indicated delayed recruitment of CD4+ cells and delayed interleukin (IL) 2 secretion in skin inoculation sites in simian immunodeficiency (SIV) positive animals. The development of the secondary immune response against …

Resource -Based, Strategic Group, And Industry Influences On Firm Performance., Jeremy Collin Short Jan 2000

Resource -Based, Strategic Group, And Industry Influences On Firm Performance., Jeremy Collin Short

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines resource-based, strategic group, and industry influences on firm performance. The resource-based view of the firm and strategic groups research are two areas of organizational inquiry that have lacked both theoretical as well as empirical integration. This dissertation provides a critical first step towards that end. Three papers are presented that first develop---and then test---resource-based and strategic group influences on organizational performance. The primary findings of this dissertation are threefold. First, variance in organizational performance exists both within and between strategic groups. Second, the degree to which firm, group, and industry explained variance in organizational performance varied based …

Dna Alkylation And Its Repair In Small Fish Species., Thomas James Vicek Jan 2000

Dna Alkylation And Its Repair In Small Fish Species., Thomas James Vicek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mechanisms of DNA alkylation and repair were investigated in 3 small fish species. Following aqueous exposure to either N-methyl- N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine or ethyl methanesulfonate, the hepatic DNA from the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, was analyzed for alkyl-DNA adducts via high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry. Although potential tissue detection limits ranged from 14--101 fmoles of alkyl adducts/mg tissue, no alkyl-DNA adducts were detected in the exposed tissues. To assess the potential repair of alkyl-DNA adducts in 2 other small fish species, alkyltransferase activities within hepatic protein extracts of the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, and Gambusia affinis were determined using …

Advanced Oxidation Processes For Remediation Of Explosives -Contaminated Soils., Elizabeth Covington Fleming Jan 2000

Advanced Oxidation Processes For Remediation Of Explosives -Contaminated Soils., Elizabeth Covington Fleming

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Explosives contamination in soils is an environmental concern for the public due to their toxic effects. The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is particularly concerned with explosives contamination in soils due to the thousands of sites for which it is responsible for remediating. To date, the most common technology utilized for remediating explosives contamination in soils has been incineration. However, costs for incineration have been estimated to range from approximately $250 to $3250 per ton and are generally inversely related to the volume of soil. The use of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including dark and illuminated forms, was evaluated …

The Effects Of Government Funding On Non -Profit Organizational Behavior., Melissa Scott Flournoy Jan 2000

The Effects Of Government Funding On Non -Profit Organizational Behavior., Melissa Scott Flournoy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the problem of determining the effects of government funding on non-profit organizational behavior. The definition of a non-profit organization is a formal organization, privately incorporated but serving a public purpose, self-governing, voluntary to some degree and non-profit distributing (Salamon, 1993). The literature review demonstrates the increasing role of non-profit organizations as a means of social service delivery in the United States. As a result of policy changes and funding opportunities, non-profit organizations are increasingly providing services that were in the purview of government. The hypothesis for this study is that government funding positively affects the organizational behavior …

Caring For The Soul In A Postmodern Age: The Political Thought Of Jan Patocka., Edward Francis Findlay Jan 2000

Caring For The Soul In A Postmodern Age: The Political Thought Of Jan Patocka., Edward Francis Findlay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study undertakes to examine the political thought of the late Czech philosopher and Charter 77 spokesman, Jan Patocka. It leads to a consideration of the fundamental problem of contemporary and postmodern theory, the question of a metaphysical foundation for our philosophical and political self-understanding. Patocka asserted the common origin of philosophy and politics in ancient Greece and maintained that their animating force was freedom, understood ontologically as our ability to transcend the merely objective and relative in life and to see human being as a being of possibility. He called this insight, embodied in the activity of Socrates, the …

This study examined the effects of suggestive questioning on women's retrospective ratings of pain and anxiety experienced during colposcopy. The wording of questions was varied between participants (Pain Suggesting, Pain Denying, or No Suggestion). Number of recall sessions was also varied between participants in that some participants completed two ratings (Immediate and Delayed Recall) while others completed only one rating (Delayed Recall). Trait anxiety, pain severity at the time of the memory task, and medical procedure (whether or not the patient underwent a biopsy) were included in the analyses as covariates. Ratings of sensory and affective pain severity as well …

The Effects And Mechanism Of Action Of Cimetidine On Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Using An Equine Soft-Tissue Inflammation Model., Robert Paul Hunter Jan 2000

The Effects And Mechanism Of Action Of Cimetidine On Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Using An Equine Soft-Tissue Inflammation Model., Robert Paul Hunter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cytochrome P-450 (CYP) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are similar heme containing enzymes. Cimetidine (CIM) is an H2 antagonist, and since CIM inhibits CYP, it may also bind to the heme-iron of NOS and reduce NO generation. Six horses each had three tissue chambers inserted subcutaneously on either side of the neck for Trial 1. Trial 2 also used 6 female Thoroughbred horses implanted with at least two tissue chambers as in Trial 1. Blood and tissue chamber fluid (TCF) were sampled at -24, 0, 4, 8, 12 h and at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days after …

Civic Engagement, Local Capitalism And Poverty: The Effects Of The Black Belt, Single Female Household Headship, And Metropolitan Status., Michelle Marie Livermore Jan 2000

Civic Engagement, Local Capitalism And Poverty: The Effects Of The Black Belt, Single Female Household Headship, And Metropolitan Status., Michelle Marie Livermore

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent research on the relationship between civic community and poverty concludes that high levels of civic involvement are associated with low poverty levels. I revisit the relationship between civic community and poverty by asking whether it differs across counties with different social structural characteristics. I test for interactions between the presence of civically engaged denominations and area racial composition, single female household headship, and metropolitan status. The association between the percent of a county's population in civically engaged denominations and poverty differs according to certain county social structural characteristics. First, areas with a critical percentage of African Americans demonstrate a …
