Analysis And Direction For The Changing World Of Breakfast Cereal Advertising: A Content Analysis Of 1998-99 Television Advertisements, Megan Ann Lane

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This investigation sought to build on past content analysis of children-focused advertising to better understand how advertisers have responded to the changing television advertising market. It is important because little attention has been paid to the effects of cable specialization and FCC regulations on the methods and appeals used in children-focused advertising.

On The Cost- Effectiveness Of Economic Sanctions, Richard Parker Jan 2000

On The Cost- Effectiveness Of Economic Sanctions, Richard Parker

Faculty Articles and Papers

For over one hundred years, the attraction of economic sanctions as a middle path between talk and violence has prompted the use of sanctions for a wide variety of purposes ranging from weakening adversaries, toppling governments, and promoting human rights to opening foreign markets, promoting intellectual property, and protecting the global environment.

In recent years, however, economic sanctions have been subjected to stricter scrutiny than ever before, due to a sustained media and lobbying blitz by the U.S. business community under the banner of "USA*Engage." The campaign, begun in 1997, has produced a deluge of newspaper editorials and stories, virtually …

In non-legal terms, subject matter jurisdiction is much like your American Express card. You cannot "leave home without it." This is especially true if you represent a Medicare provider or supplier and intend to sue on a Medicare claim. To be sure, your well-pleaded complaint alleges several bases for the federal district court's subject matter jurisdiction, including, but not limited to, 28 U.S.C. § 1331 (federal question jurisdiction), 28 U.S.C. § 1346 (federal defendant jurisdiction), 28 U.S.C. § 1361 (mandamus), and 5 U.S.C. § 702 (the Administrative Procedures Act). Perhaps, your complaint is brought in the context of an adversary …

Trickle By Trickle: Municipalization Of The New Orleans Water System In The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Carolyn Kolb Jan 2000

Trickle By Trickle: Municipalization Of The New Orleans Water System In The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Carolyn Kolb

College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Working Papers, 1991-2000

Regionalism is being explored by a wide variety of community players who include representatives from the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors (Dodge 1996, 1). Intermunicipal agreements, county service expansion, new region-wide special purpose governments, and multi-sector coalitions of "civic regionalists" have proliferated throughout the country during the last decade, even though the benefits of regional cooperation remain elusive in many ways (Foster 1997, 375). Hence, the question remains: Do greater metropolitan planning efforts lead to higher levels of community prosperity and quality? Nelson and Foster (1999) have found some evidence that more coordinated regional governing structures, particularly regional utilities, seem …

Perception-Action Dissociations Of A Walkable Müller-Lyer Configuration, Maryjane Wraga, Sarah H. Creem, Dennis R. Proffitt Jan 2000

Perception-Action Dissociations Of A Walkable Müller-Lyer Configuration, Maryjane Wraga, Sarah H. Creem, Dennis R. Proffitt

Psychology: Faculty Publications

These studies examined the role of spatial encoding in inducing perception-action dissociations in visual illusions. Participants were shown a large-scale Müller-Lyer configuration with hoops as its tails. In Experiment 1, participants either made verbal estimates of the extent of the Müller-Lyer shaft (verbal task) or walked the extent without vision, in an offset path (blind-walking task). For both tasks, participants stood a small distance away from the configuration, to elicit object-relative encoding of the shaft with respect to its hoops. A similar illusion bias was found in the verbal and motoric tasks. In Experiment 2, participants stood at one endpoint …

Updating Displays After Imagined Object And Viewer Rotations, Maryjane Wraga, Sarah H. Creem, Dennis R. Proffitt Jan 2000

Updating Displays After Imagined Object And Viewer Rotations, Maryjane Wraga, Sarah H. Creem, Dennis R. Proffitt

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Six experiments compared spatial updating of an array after imagined rotations of the array versus viewer. Participants responded faster and made fewer errors in viewer tasks than in array tasks while positioned outside (Experiment 1) or inside (Experiment 2) the array. An apparent array advantage for updating objects rather than locations was attributable to participants imagining translations of single objects rather than rotations of the array (Experiment 3). Superior viewer performance persisted when the array was reduced to 1 object (Experiment 4); however, an object with a familiar configuration improved object performance somewhat (Experiment 5). Object performance reached near-viewer levels …
