Joseph Smith And The Problem Of Evil, David L. Paulsen Jan 2000

Joseph Smith And The Problem Of Evil, David L. Paulsen

BYU Studies

Nothing challenges the rationality of our belief in God or tests our trust in him more severely than human suffering and wickedness. Both are pervasive in our common experience. If this is not immediately evident, a glance at the morning paper or the evening news will make it so. At the moment, names like "Oklahoma City," "Columbine," "Kosovo," and "Turkey" evoke image upon image of unspeakable human cruelty or grief. But still "Auschwitz" and "Belsen" haunt our memories. And who can fathom the anguish of family members in West Valley, Utah, when they discovered their precious little girls suffocated together …

Defining Anuran Malformations In The Context Of A Developmental Problem, Carol U. Meteyer, Rebecca A. Cole, Kathryn A. Converse, Douglas E. Docherty, Mark Wolcott, Judy C. Helgen, Richard Levey, Laura Eaton-Poole, James G. Burkhart

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This paper summarizes terminology and general concepts involved in animal development for the purpose of providing background for the study and understanding of frog malformations. The results of our radiographic investigation of rear limb malformations in Rana pipiens provide evidence that frog malformations are the product of early developmental errors. Although bacteria, parasites and viruses were identified in these metamorphosed frogs, the relevant window to look for the teratogenic affect of these agents is in the early tadpole stage during limb development. As a result, our microbiological findings must be regarded as inconclusive relative to determining their contribution to malformations …

Morphological Abnormalities In Illinois Cricket Frogs, Acris Crepitans, 1968-71, Robert H. Gray

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Reports of malformed amphibians have been increasing, including external deformities such as missing or extra arms and legs, missing eyes and mandibles, and internal abnormalities involving the bladder, digestive system, and testes. Natural phenomena such as limb amputations during predation attempts by other animals, parasitism, xenobiotic chemicals (herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers and others), and UV-B or other radiation (either directly or indirectly by triggering production of toxicants from nontoxic chemicals) have all been linked to amphibian abnormalities. From 1968-71, I studied the natural history, effective breeding size, and seasonal, annual, and geographic variation in color morph frequencies of cricket frogs (Acris …

White Paper: Certification, Credentials, And Credentialing In Pharmacy, Donald Kishi, Jeffery A. Goad, Nancy Korman, Teresa Miller, Mary Ferrill, Holly Strom

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The rapid evolution of the health care system has provided the pharmacy profession with opportunities to expand existing and develop new direct patient care roles. Two critical challenges that the pharmacy profession must contend with to ensure the continued expansion and acceptance of pharmacists in advanced practice roles (e.g. direct patient care roles) are: (1) To develop and implement a credible, systematic, standards-based, and profession-wide plan that includes a system for identifying the types of pharmacists' practices requiring credentials, a validated certification process, and a computerized credentialing process that is current, comprehensive, and easily accessible; (2) To establish the credibility …

A Study Of Social Network Of Suicide Attempters In University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Z.Z. Nor Jan 2000

A Study Of Social Network Of Suicide Attempters In University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Z.Z. Nor

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Poor social support is associated with significant increased suicide risk. In thisstudy, 60 suicide attempters were assessed on their socio demographic characteristics and psychiatric diagnoses. Social support was rated by usingThe Interview Schedule of Social Interaction (ISSI) scale in relation to the social characteristics and the psychiatric diagnoses. The results showed that femaleswere more preponderance than males and the females had poor social interactionas compared to the males. The Indians were still over represented and the proportion of Malays attempted suicide had increased. Poor access to social integration was significantly more often amongst the Hindus than all the otherreligions. Suicide …

Application Of Ribosomal Rna Gene Restriction Patterns Analysis And Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis In Distinguishing Salmonella Weltevreden Isolates In Malaysia, Yee Ling Goh, Savithri Devi Puthucheary, Kwai Lin Thong Jan 2000

Application Of Ribosomal Rna Gene Restriction Patterns Analysis And Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis In Distinguishing Salmonella Weltevreden Isolates In Malaysia, Yee Ling Goh, Savithri Devi Puthucheary, Kwai Lin Thong

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

A representative sample of 20 isolates of Salmonella weltevreden strains from stool cultures of patients admitted at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia were analyzed. All the strains were susceptible to ampicillin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, trimethoprim, gentamicin and co-trimoxazole. Ribosomal RNA gene restriction pattern analysis of PstI-digested DNA gave three ribotypes while pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis of XbaI-digested DNA gave ten distinct profiles. PFGE was more discriminative than ribotyping in distinguishing the strains. The majority of the strains analyzed were very closely related with similarity coefficient values ranging from 0.8 to 1.0. Both PFGE and ribotyping could distinguish …

House Dust Mite Fauna In The Klang Valley, Malaysia, A. Mariana, T.M. Ho, Mohd Sofian-Azirun, A.L. Wong

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Allergy to house dust mites (HDM) is an important cause of asthma and rhinitis in Malaysia. This study was carried out to evaluate the dust mite fauna in the Klang Valley. Dust samples were collected from 20 houses from March 1994 to February 1995. Thirty-three dust samples from mattresses were examined monthly for the occurrence of HDM. A total of 22 species in 9 families of HDM was identified. The most common and densely populated species was Blomia tropicalis with an average density of 8,934 mites/g of dust. Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus was the next in abundance, followed by Malayoglyphus intermedius. All …

Lumbar Puncture Refusal In Febrile Convulsion, S.G. Ling, Christopher Chiong Meng Boey

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

A descriptive study was carried out on patients admitted for febrile convulsion over a two-year period to determine rate of lumbar puncture (LP) refusal, factors associated with LP refusal and outcome of such patients. From 77 patients indicated and requested for LP, 19 (25) patients refused the procedure. Refusal of LP was significantly more common among the Malay ethnic group (p=0.01) but not significantly associated with age, gender or whether the patient was admitted for a first or recurrent febrile convulsion. Half of the patients who refused LP had to be started empirically on antibiotics for meningitis. Patients who refused …
