Nf00-429 Controlling Pond Algae With Barley Straw, John C. Holz Jan 2000

Nf00-429 Controlling Pond Algae With Barley Straw, John C. Holz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Algae are microscopic, free-floating plants which comprise a critical component of a lake's food web. They are fed upon by tiny animals called zooplankton which are an important food source for fish. Algae color the water green or brown, and uncontrolled growth can lead to nuisance surface scums, poor water clarity, noxious odors and an overall reduction in the lake's recreational value. Excessive levels or "blooms" of algae occur when nutrients, especially phosphorus, are abundant. After taking steps to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering a lake, it may be desirable to control the algae growth directly. Typically this is …

G00-1411 Biosecurity Basics For Cattle Operations And Good Management Practices (Gmp) For Controlling Infectious Diseases, Marilyn Buhman, Grant Dewell, Dicky D. Griffin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide introduces cattle producers to the concept of biosecurity and provides practical management recommendations for preventing and/or containing infectious disease.

Biosecurity

The goal of biosecurity is to stop transmission of disease-causing agents by preventing, minimizing or controlling cross-contamination of body fluids (feces, urine, saliva, etc.) between animals, animals to feed and animals to equipment that may directly or indirectly contact animals. Biosecurity management practices are designed to prevent the spread of disease by minimizing the movement of biologic organisms and their vectors (viruses, bacteria, rodents, flies, etc.) onto and within your operation. Biosecurity can be very difficult to maintain …

Making Biomedical Policy Through Constitutional Adjudication:The Example Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Carl E. Scheider Jan 2000

Making Biomedical Policy Through Constitutional Adjudication:The Example Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Carl E. Scheider

Book Chapters

Throughout most of American history no one would have supposed biomedical policy could or should be made through constitutional adjudication. No one would have thought that the Constitution spoke to biomedical issues, that those issues were questions of federal policy, or that judges were competent to handle them. Today, however, the resurgence of substantive due process has swollen the scope of the Fourteenth Amendment, the distinction between federal and state spheres is tattered, and few statutes escape judicial vetting. Furthermore, Abraham Lincoln's wish that the Constitution should "become the political religion of the nation" has been granted. "We now reverently …

Couples: Marriage, Civil Union, And Domestic Partnership, David L. Chambers Jan 2000

Couples: Marriage, Civil Union, And Domestic Partnership, David L. Chambers

Book Chapters

In this country, during the last decades of the twentieth century, thousands of lesbians married other women and thousands of gay men married other men. Many of these couples recited traditional vows in churches and synagogues. Others have pledged to each other in their own backyards in words that they wrote themselves. But not one of these thousands of solemn occasions was recognized as creating a legally valid marriage. In the United States, each state has its own statute defining who can marry, and as far as the states were concerned, these couples were playing dress up. One state has …

Stamped With Glory: Lewis Tappan And The Africans Of The Amistad, Douglas O. Linder Jan 2000

Stamped With Glory: Lewis Tappan And The Africans Of The Amistad, Douglas O. Linder

Faculty Works

Abolitionism came relatively late to Lewis Tappan. Devotional, benevolent and hardworking are all words that describe Tappan in his twenties and thirties. Social reformer he was not. In 1818, Tappan abandoned the Calvinism of his mother for Unitarianism, then fashionable for a socially ambitious merchant. For the next eight years, Tappan enjoyed the typical life of an upper-middle-class New England merchant. He took his new faith seriously, however, editing a Unitarian journal, and becoming the first treasurer of the American Unitarian Association. In the mid-1820's, America experienced The Great Second Awakening, a widespread revival of religion and religious debate and …

Locus Of Control, Religious Values, Work Values And Social Policy Choices., Carolyn Kasprzak Falkowski Jan 2000

Locus Of Control, Religious Values, Work Values And Social Policy Choices., Carolyn Kasprzak Falkowski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Individuals' religious beliefs were examined in terms of their effect on one's positions on various social issues. Beliefs regarding salvation were chosen as beliefs central to a Christian faith. Locus of control and Protestant work ethic were included as related concepts. A sample of Christian (primarily Protestant) seminary students was selected in this study in order to include individuals who are more likely to have actively considered both their theology and their beliefs on social policies. Most of the seminarians expressed a significantly internal locus of control and some acceptance of the concepts included in the Protestant work ethic. Most …

Development And Evaluation Of A Mass Spectrometer -Based Continuous Emission Monitor For Organic Compound Emissions From Combustion Devices., Emmanuel Tijani Wada

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Mass Spectrometer-based Continuous Emission Monitor (MS-CEM) for organic compounds was developed and evaluated at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Pilot-Scale Rotary Kiln Incinerator (RKI). The MS-CEM consists of stack probe, heat traced sampling line, vacuum pump, particulate filter, Nafion dryer and Extrel mass spectrometer. The Nafion dryer is a special type of dryer that has the ability to remove moisture from the gas sample without removing organic compounds of interest. The mass spectrometer is a quadrupole mass filter. The mass spectrometer includes a computer that controls and optimizes the operation of the unit. The MS-CEM was tested by injecting …

Still Cloudy, With Little Chance Of Clearing: Fda's Proposed Rule On Structure/Function Claims For Dietary Supplements, Michele Simon Jan 2000

Still Cloudy, With Little Chance Of Clearing: Fda's Proposed Rule On Structure/Function Claims For Dietary Supplements, Michele Simon

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The FDA's proposed rule regarding structure/function claims for dietary supplements is intended to give consumers more information about dietary supplements. While "disease claims" are prohibited under the rule, claims that a product affects a structure or function of the body are permissible. However, the distinction between a "disease claim" and a "structure/function claim" ignores the reasons why many consumers turn to dietary supplements. Rather than dispelling confusion surrounding dietary supplements, the proposed rule will only add to it.

Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim Jan 2000

Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a procedure, which can only consider relative priorities as estimated by decision-makers. A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is a data-oriented approach for evaluating the relative efficiency of a group of entities referred to as Decision Making Units (DMUs). This research work integrates and combines positive aspects of AHP's estimated qualitative data and DEA's quantitative data. This combination is accomplished by specifying two variants of the DEA methodology for selection of the best DMU. Initially the priority weights of AHP are integrated with the DEA methodology to provide results that are logic based. Next, …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Reports of malformed frogs were made to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) from different parts of Minnesota in 1993, 1995, 1996, and 1997 and one, nine, 190, and 172 reports were received, respectively. MPCA field crews and Drs. Hoppe and McKinnell documented malformed frog locations starting in 1993. By 1997, MPCA field crews documented malformed frogs at 62 locations in Minnesota, in 29 of 87 counties. Most malformations were in young metamorphs of Rana pipiens but they were observed also in R. clamitans, R. septentrionalis, R. sylvatica, Bufo americanus, and Hyla spp. Frequencies of malformations varied by time of …
