Web-Based System On Pregnancy - Giving Birth (Sistem Kehamilan - Kelahiran Anak), Hoi Yen Siow

Student Works (2000-2009)

They need to learn the related information to minimize their anxiety, to help them discover the danger signs earlier and to be well prepared for their baby's arrival. In Malaysia, pregnancy women tend to get the knowledge on pregnancy from their relatives, friends and books. An online system on pregnancy - giving birth could be developed as a good alternative of their information resources. The information could be delivered via World Wide Web (WWW). Deserving Disabilities: Why The Definition Under The Americans With Disabilities Act Should Be Revised To Eliminate The Substantial Limitation Requirement, Cheryl L. Anderson Jan 2000

Deserving Disabilities: Why The Definition Under The Americans With Disabilities Act Should Be Revised To Eliminate The Substantial Limitation Requirement, Cheryl L. Anderson

Missouri Law Review

A commentator on a public radio program recently spoke in favor of the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") by asserting that "[t]he blind, deaf, and crippled really do deserve our help."' Although this commentator purported to support the ADA, his actual message was that the definition of "disability" in the Act is excessively vague and allows individuals not "deserving" of legal protection, such as persons with back impairments and mental impairments, to, in his words, "[hitch] a ride on the disability bandwagon."2 His argument that the ADA should reach only the claims of "deserving" individuals with disabilities has had powerful …

Respecting Your Elders: The Highly Marketable Skills Standard For Social Security Disability Claimants Over Age Sixty, Thomas G. Pirmantgen

Missouri Law Review

As individuals age, they may face barriers to obtaining employment that did not exist for them when they were younger. Age thus may become a factor in any assessment of the likelihood that persons will successfully find new work. For Social Security disability benefits claimants under age fifty, age is generally not considered to present an obstacle to adjusting to new employment contexts. However, for claimants over age fifty, age is acknowledged as a factor that may significantly impact their ability to adjust to new work

Those With Disabilities Take Heed: Eighth Circuit Suggests That Ada May Not Protect Those Who Fail To Control A Controllable Disability, Brian T. Rabineau Jan 2000

Those With Disabilities Take Heed: Eighth Circuit Suggests That Ada May Not Protect Those Who Fail To Control A Controllable Disability, Brian T. Rabineau

Missouri Law Review

Finding that millions of Americans suffer discrimination as a result of a disability, the federal government enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") in an attempt to rectify and prevent such injustice.2 For the most part, many will find themselves within the ADA's protection. At times, however, an individual may be unable to establish a prima facie case of discrimination, thereby finding himself excluded In Burroughs v. City of Springfield, a case of first impression, the Eighth Circuit considered whether the ADA's protection extends to one who fails to control his diabetes.' The court determined that failure to control a …

The Reconceptualization Of Legislative History In The Supreme Court, Charles Tiefer Jan 2000

The Reconceptualization Of Legislative History In The Supreme Court, Charles Tiefer

All Faculty Scholarship

In 1995, the Supreme Court began to embrace a approach to interpreting Congressional intent. From that year forward, the Breyers-Stevens model of legislative history, or "institutional legislative history," has seen significant success, emerging in the shadows of the success Justice Scalia's enjoyed while promoting his brand of textualism in the early 1990s. In developing a new way to view Congressional intent, Justices Breyers and Stevens synthesize information gathered from congressional report details, preferably attached to bill drafting choices, thereby renouncing Scalia's reliance on the purposes espoused by the Congressional majority. This new approach, the author contends, rejuvenated the court's approach …

The Changing Structure Of The Homeless Population In Cork City: Implications For Theories Of Homelessness And Service Provision, Michelle Norris, Noreen Kearns

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The last two decades have seen extensive reform of policy on homelessness in Ireland, but these changes have not been underpinned by any extensive research which would shed light on the causes of homelessness and help in the design of settlement services. This article, which describes the results of the first detailed survey of the homeless population of Cork city, is intended to address the dearth of empirical evidence on homelessness in Ireland. This information is presented in three parts. The opening section of this article outlines the methods which were used to collect data on the homeless population in …

Mental Health Care Policies And Services In Switzerland, Stefan Kunz Jan 2000

Mental Health Care Policies And Services In Switzerland, Stefan Kunz

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article summarises the recent development of Swiss mental health policies and services. The last three decades have been characterised by a strong emphasis on the socio psychiatric approach Bachmann, 1995; Ciompi, 1997, 1994,1987a, 1987b). The establishment of a decentralised, patient and community focused mental health care network, integrating different therapeutic methods under a uniform administration is the base concept of the emerging movement (Ernst, 1998;Bachmann, 1995,Ciompi, 1994, 1987b). Achievements and problems of mental health care provision are outlined. A more proactive role for mental health care professionals in policy is proposed to contribute to the solution of present injustices. …
