Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Decreases Expression Of Hla-Dr And Cd86 By Human Dendritic Cells And Dampens Dendritic Cell-Driven T Cell- Proliferative Responses Via The Type I Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Receptor, John A. Carucci, Ralf Ignatius, Yang Wei

Publications

These studies were performed to establish whether functional receptors for calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are present on human dendritic cells (DCs) and to investigate potential immunomodulatory effects of CGRP on DCs other than Langerhans cells. Reverse transcriptase-PCR revealed expression of mRNA for a type 1 CGRP receptor by mature and immature blood- derived DCs. Sequence analysis confirmed the identity of the type 1 CGRP receptor (CGRP-R1). Addition of CGRP (10-7 M) to mature and immature DCs resulted in mobilization of intracellular calcium. Treatment of immature DCs with CGRP (10-7 M), before and after maturation in monocyte-conditioned medium, resulted …

Dendritic Cells, Infected With Vesicular Stomatitis Virus-Pseudotyped Hiv-1, Present Viral Antigens To Cd4+ And Cd8+ T Cells From Hiv-1-Infected Individuals, Angela Granelli-Piperno, Lei Zhong, Patrick Haslett

Nonreplicating vectors are being considered in HIV-1 vaccine design. However, nonreplicating viruses are typically weak immunogens, leading to efforts to target the vaccine to mature dendritic cells (DCs). We have studied a single-cycle form of HIV-1, prepared by pseudotyping envelope-defective HIV-1 plasmids with the envelope from vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) G protein (VSV-G), to which most humans lack preexisting immunity. The nonreplicating, VSV/HIV-1 efficiently infected the immature stage of DC development, in this case represented by monocytes cultured with GM-CSF and IL-4. A majority of the cells reverse transcribed the HIV-1 RNA, and a minority expressed gag protein. The infected …

Information Encoding By Individual Neurons And Groups Of Neurons In The Primary Visual Cortex, Daniel Salo Reich Jan 2000

Information Encoding By Individual Neurons And Groups Of Neurons In The Primary Visual Cortex, Daniel Salo Reich

Student Theses and Dissertations

How is information about visual stimuli encoded into the responses of neurons in the cerebral cortex? In this thesis, I describe the analysis of data recorded simultaneously from groups of up to eight nearby neurons in the primary visual cortices of anesthetized macaque monkeys. The goal is to examine the degree to which visual information is encoded into the times of action potentials in those responses (as opposed to the overall rate), and also into the identity of the neuron that fires each action potential (as opposed to the average activity across a group of nearby neurons). The data are …

Inverting The Viability Test For Abortion Law, Bruce Ching

Journal Articles

Housing Discrimination And Economic Opportunity In The Chicago Region, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Michael Leachman, Philip Nyden Jan 2000

Housing Discrimination And Economic Opportunity In The Chicago Region, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Michael Leachman, Philip Nyden

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

In 1990, the Human Relations Foundation of Chicago was created in response to a publication called Report on Race, Ethnic and Religious Tensions in Chicago, released by the Chicago Community Trust Human Relations Task Force in 1989. The human relations task force released recommendations for the creation of a foundation to energize efforts to combat racism. The Human Relations Foundation of Chicago implements the recommendations of the task force's report, targeting Chicago leadership by concentrating on issues related to, but not limited to, housing, education, religion, media, government and business.

Continued racial and ethnic segregation has continuing implications for the …

A Need To Know Basis: Record Keeping, Information Access, And The Uniform Status Of Children Of Assisted Conception Act, Amy Shelf Jan 2000

A Need To Know Basis: Record Keeping, Information Access, And The Uniform Status Of Children Of Assisted Conception Act, Amy Shelf

UC Law Journal

This note examines the delicate legal issues surrounding recent medical advances in reproductive technology, which have dramatically transformed the way humans reproduce. The ability to manipulate fertility raises difficult ethical issues, particularly when embryo and gametes donors choose to remain anonymous. The note addresses the current legal system's unsuccessful attempts at dealing with requests for information made by the offspring created through these new methods. The author analyzes the Uniform Status of Children of Assisted Conception Act, and, while agreeing with the Act's goal of putting the rights of children to the fore, also notes its failure to address record-keeping …

If so, how does forgiveness manifest itself there? The article explores this issue in terms of the opportunities for forgiveness provided by "problem-solving" courts.

Why A Fundamental Right To A Quality Education Is Not Enough, James G. Wilson Jan 2000

Why A Fundamental Right To A Quality Education Is Not Enough, James G. Wilson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article relies upon the political and economic analysis of such great thinkers as Aristotle and Rousseau to understand and normatively evaluate constitutional caselaw in general and education cases in particular. The article's title contains its conclusion: a judicially created right to a quality education is a laudable, but possibly counterproductive and definitely insufficient condition, for creating a humane constitutional system. The rest of society needs to do far more to protect the average citizen and worker from the ever-ravenous ruling class. All the edification in the world will not mean much if there are only a few decent jobs …

Second-Parent Adoption, Patricia J. Falk

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The topic of this article is second-parent adoption. I hope to accomplish four things in my discussion. First, I will define second-parent adoption and give some reasons that it is desirable for both parents and children. Second, I will summarize the state of the law in terms of legislative enactments and case law in the United States. Third, I will discuss the role of social science in second-parent adoption cases. Finally, I will discuss some of the implications of recognizing second-parent adoptions.

Punishment Of Health Care Fraud , Yvette M. Mastin Jan 2000

Punishment Of Health Care Fraud , Yvette M. Mastin

Journal of Law and Health

Although the definition of "health care fraud" is only one of the numerous issues of concern to health law practitioners and health care providers, the language that defines the conduct in question is the foundation of all other concerns related to "health care fraud." This Article will demonstrate the need for a narrowly construed definition of "health care fraud." The Article begins by providing a scenario to explain how a situation involving potential "health care fraud" can arise in the delivery of health care services. The Article then addresses how "health care fraud" is defined through a discussion of the …

Conceptualization Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder : Differences By Trauma Type And Gender, Tracy Muklewicz Jan 2000

Conceptualization Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder : Differences By Trauma Type And Gender, Tracy Muklewicz

Honors Capstones

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder has carried various implications for clinicians, particularly in the areas of gender and trauma type. Extensive literature review provides indication that individual research is fairly restricted to highly specific types of PTSD symptoms and presentations, which could limit the overall effectiveness of the disorder as a diagnostic tool. A history of PTSD as a diagnosis is presented. Three types of trauma are discussed in a research setting: Crime victims, military personnel, and gender non-specific traumas. Each study is reviewed in light of future directions for PTSD research to make the diagnostic category less ambiguous and more applicable …
