Pre-Employment Character Assessments For United States Pretrial Services And Probation Officers, Michael Blake Baker Jan 2000

Pre-Employment Character Assessments For United States Pretrial Services And Probation Officers, Michael Blake Baker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Are pre-employment character assessments for federal officers necessary? Can character be tested? What does Aristotle's theory of moral perception and practical wisdom have to do with law enforcement? I will look at what constitutes human flourishing or eudaimonia and how it relates to law enforcement. Moral perception and judgment are discussed and how perception is necessary in the Federal Pretrial Services and Probation Officer's profession. What makes one person's character good and another's less than good? Are there tests currently being used to test for strength of character or are they really testing for ethical sensitivity or moral judgment?

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

To study transmission patterns of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in persons with AIDS, we evaluated P. carinii isolates from patients in five U.S. cities for variation at two independent genetic loci, the mitochondrial large subunit rRNA and dihydropteroate synthase. Fourteen unique multilocus genotypes were observed in 191 isolates that were examined at both loci. Mixed infections, accounting for 17.8% of cases, were associated with primary PCP. Genotype frequency distribution patterns varied by patients' place of diagnosis but not by place of birth. Genetic variation at the two loci suggests three probable characteristics of transmission: that most cases of PCP do …

Adequacy Of Disclosure Of Restrictions On Flipping Ipo Securities, Royce De R. Barondes Jan 2000

Adequacy Of Disclosure Of Restrictions On Flipping Ipo Securities, Royce De R. Barondes

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the implications of this practice under the disclosure obligations imposed by federal securities laws and concludes that the current disclosure is materially misleading, particularly in light of the failure to disclose the selective application of the penalties. Moreover, the selective application of the penalties casts significant doubt on whether these offerings can be considered “fixed price” offerings, which would mean that cursory disclosure of the practice would not suffice.

Hormone Replacement Therapy, Or Just Eat More Meat: The Technological Hare Vs. The Regulatory Tortoise, Leticia M. Diaz

Faculty Scholarship

Is meat with its high fat content the real culprit, or is it the FDA-approved growth hormones, the same hormones that have been rejected in Europe, that should bear the blame? Why is eating less meat associated with a lower incidence of many types of cancer? Could it be chemical overload? American women are about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than are women in less developed countries.
