Last-Ditch Warfare In Ancient Mesoamerica Recalls The Book Of Mormon, John L. Sorenson Jul 2000

Last-Ditch Warfare In Ancient Mesoamerica Recalls The Book Of Mormon, John L. Sorenson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Warfare is a constant theme in the Book of Mormon. Conflicts with varying motivations erupted between the Nephites and Lamanites from the beginning of their sojourn in the New World. Ultimately, the Nephites as a sociopolitical group were exterminated in one climactic battle when hundreds of thousands died in a single day. Have Mesoamerican archaeologists detected an intensity and scale of warfare great enough to account for the extermination of a people like the Nephites? Yes, there is now good reason to believe that the period when the Nephites were being destroyed by their enemies was characterized in southern Mexico …

The Problematic Role Of Dna Testing In Unraveling Human History, John L. Sorenson Jul 2000

The Problematic Role Of Dna Testing In Unraveling Human History, John L. Sorenson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Over the last century, new techniques of scientific analysis have been developed that have been applied with the intent to clarify the course of human history. Immediately after World War II, blood group data seemed to provide a magic key to open up the history of the world’s populations, but by the 1960s such studies were shown to be unrealistic and misleading. The new tool in human biology and anthropology is DNA analysis. Despite cautions from the best scientists about the limits the new findings have for interpreting human history, some enthusiasts continue to claim too much for DNA study.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Earth Observing System (EOS) instrument teams must validate the operational products they produce from the Terra spacecraft data. As a pilot for future validation activities, four EOS teams (MODIS, MISR, ASTER, and Landsat-7) and community experts conducted an 11-day field campaign in May 1997 near Las Cruces, NM. The goals of the Prototype Validation Exercise (PROVE) included (1) gaining experience in the collection and use of field data for EOS product validation; (2) developing coordination, measurement, and data-archiving protocols; and (3) compiling a synoptic land and atmospheric data set for testing algorithms. PROVE was held at the USDA-Agricultural Research …

Interrupting Generational Poverty: Experiences Affecting Successful Completion Of A Bachelor's Degree, Donna Marie Beegle Jul 2000

Interrupting Generational Poverty: Experiences Affecting Successful Completion Of A Bachelor's Degree, Donna Marie Beegle

Dissertations and Theses

The problem addressed in this study can be stated thus: There are extremely limited numbers of students from the lowest economic class graduating from our nation's institutions of higher education. The challenge to institutions of higher education is how to improve access, support, and successful completion of higher education for students experiencing the most extreme poverty barriers.

Weber's (1946) social-class theory was selected to determine the meanings and interpretations of students from poverty backgrounds in regard to their success and perceived barriers to success in completing college. This theoretical construct is based on the idea that collectively held meanings arise …

Description Of A New Subspecies Of Poanes Aaroni (Hesperioidae: Hesperiinae) From The West Central Gulf Coast Of The Southern United States, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Poanes aaroni bordeloni is described from Jefferson County, Texas, United States. This taxon is part of a lepidopteran community endemic to the west central area of the United States Gulf Coast between Mobile Bay, Alabama and Galveston Bay, Texas. As such, bordeloni is defined taxonomically by its evolutionary development as much as by its facies. Bordeloni is the largest aaroni subspecies. Bordeloni males are marked much like those of P. a. howardi both dorsally and ventrally. Bordeloni females usually have the fulvous spotting on the dorsal forewings reduced as in P. a. minimus females while …

The Impacts Of The Introduced European Green Crab, Carcinus Maenas, On Selected Bivalves And Meiofaunal Communities, Zasha A. Bassett

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the potential impact of the invasive green crab, Carcinus maenas, in Yaquina Bay, Oregon. I sampled the current extent of crab colonization in the intertidal zone of Yaquina Bay using a standardized trapping regimen in selected intertidal sites in August and September 1999. I also evaluated the potential impacts of C. maenas on the commercially important bivalve, Crassotrea gigas. Carcinus' preferred size ranges of C. gigas and other species were experimentally determined. Additionally, Carcinus species preference for C. gigas was examined in relation to two common bivalves, Mytilus trossolus and Macoma nasuta. Experiments were …

Class Pictures: Representations Of Race, Gender And Ability In A Century Of School Photography, Eric Margolis Jul 2000

Class Pictures: Representations Of Race, Gender And Ability In A Century Of School Photography, Eric Margolis

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article examines photographs taken of American public school classes between the 1880's and the 1940's. Most of the images were found in two virtual archives: The American Memory site at the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Center. These very large photograph collections were searched for representations of race, gender, and physical ability. The photographs were compared and contrasted and analyzed for elements of hidden curricula using techniques drawn from the social sciences and humanities. It was found that these large photo collections have significant gaps and historical amnesias. Collections made under conditions of racial segregation …

Estimating The Economic Value Of The Ocean In A National Income Accounting Framework, Charles S. Colgan Jul 2000

Estimating The Economic Value Of The Ocean In A National Income Accounting Framework, Charles S. Colgan

Publications

A key part of the effort to estimate the economic value of the ocean is to develop estimates of the appropriate values of the goods and services traded in the market economy. Such estimates should include the output of industries associated with the ocean, as well as other measures of economic activity, including income generated, employment, the number of firms, etc. Providing the information that permits seeing the economy of the ocean within the context of other economic activity requires preparing estimates that are consistent with the National Income and Product

Accounts (NIPA). The key component is Gross Product Originating …

Collegiate Life From Both Sides Of The Desk: South Dakota State University In The 1880s, Lisa R. Lindell

Hilton M. Briggs Library Faculty Publications

The ninth of August 1888 was a day to remember in the history of South Dakota State University and the life of one of its first students. On that day, John Merton Aldrich and two classmates graduated from the institution then known as Dakota Agricultural College (DAC), becoming the first to complete the full college program. Excited and a little dazed, having just become engaged to be married the previous day, Aldrich still took time to recount the ceremonies in his diary, a record he had faithfully kept throughout his three years at DAC. Among his teachers and mentors at …
