The Phonology And Morphology Of The Tanacross Athabaskan Language, Gary Holton
The Phonology And Morphology Of The Tanacross Athabaskan Language, Gary Holton
Alaska Native Language Center Faculty
This dissertation presents a linguistic description of the phonology and morphology of Tanacross Athabaskan, an endangered language spoken by approximately sixty persons in eastern interior Alaska. There is little extant documentation of Tanacross; hence, this description is based primarily on data gathered from first-hand field work. Tanacross is typical of the Athabaskan family in its typological characteristics. There is a relatively small phonemic inventory, and most of the phonemic contrasts are neutralized outside the stem-syllable onset position. The lexicon is relatively small, consisting of perhaps six thousand distinct morphemes. Noun morphology is relatively straightforward, with few active morphological processes. In …

Their movements were such that one walked the middle of the tunnel in front of the other who lightened the way, while one was moving closer to the left side wall into the direction of movement – leaving out. At about 22.5 metre from the entrance [a fisherman] activated a mine (most probably a PROM-1) whose explosive blast threw him badly so that his head was found 2 metres from the crater from where the mine detonated, with his legs in the direction of the exit.

Annually‐dated snowpit and ice core records from two areas of West Antarctica are used to investigate spatial accumulation patterns and to evaluate temporal accumulation rate/glaciochemical concentration and flux relationships. Mean accumulation rate gradients in Marie Byrd Land (11–23 gcm−2yr−1 over 150 km, decreasing to the south) and Siple Dome (10–18 gcm−2yr−1 over 60 km, decreasing to the south) are consistent for at least the last several decades, and demonstrate the influence of the offshore quasi‐permanent Amundsen Sea low pressure system on moisture flux into the region. Local and regional‐scale topography in both regions appears to affect orographic lifting, air mass …

Life History Variation In Recently Established Populations Of Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Craig A. Stockwell, Gary L. Vinyard
Life History Variation In Recently Established Populations Of Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Craig A. Stockwell, Gary L. Vinyard
Western North American Naturalist
We report life history characteristics for 4 recently established populations of western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). Mosquitofish from thermally stable habitats, Bonham and Garrett, were characterized by maturity at large sizes, high fat reserves, and large embryos. In contrast, females from a thermally unstable habitat, Wabuska, matured at small sizes and had low fat reserves and small embryos. Females from Parker, a site with no appreciable thermal input, matured at intermediate sizes and had low fat reserves as well as large embryos. These populations shared a common ancestor in 1937; therefore, these results suggest either phenotypic plasticity or rapid …
Allozyme Variability, Isolation, And Dispersal Of Eusattus Muricatus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Within Silver State Dune Complex, Great Basin, Western North America, Tammy M. Epps, Hugh B. Britten, Richard W. Rust
Allozyme Variability, Isolation, And Dispersal Of Eusattus Muricatus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Within Silver State Dune Complex, Great Basin, Western North America, Tammy M. Epps, Hugh B. Britten, Richard W. Rust
Western North American Naturalist
Genetics of Eusattus muricatus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) populations within Silver State Dune Complex in the northern Great Basin of North America were assayed using allozyme electrophoresis. Hierarchical F-statistics showed no significant population subdivision among 3 valleys comprising Silver State Dune Complex. A regression of estimated pairwise gene flow (Nm) against pairwise geographic distance was not significant for populations within these valleys, but it was significant over larger distances. A neighbor-joining phenogram did not represent geographic relationships among populations in the 3 valleys but reflected the past geologic history of these dunes. Pairwise divergence times were low (<7000 yr) for populations within Silver State Dune Complex but were high (>18,000 …7000>

Distribution And Ecology Of Freshwater Ostracoda (Crustacea) Collected From Springs Of Nevada, Idaho, And Oregon: A Preliminary Study, Okan Külköylüoğlu, Gary L. Vinyard
Western North American Naturalist
Fourteen freshwater ostracod species collected from 24 springs in Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon between 1991 and 1994 were classified. Their ecology, based on major water parameters (i.e., temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity), and biogeographical distribution in North America were studied. Among these 14 species, 9 (Ilyocypris bradyi, I. gibba, Darwinula stevensoni, Candona candida, Heterocypris incongruens, Herpetocypris reptans, H. chevreuxi, Prionocypris canadensis, P. longiforma) are new records for Nevadas ostracod fauna, while 3 (H. reptans, P. canadensis, and Cypria turneri) are new species for Oregon. H. reptans …

High Return Rates For Relocated Red-Tailed Hawks: Preliminary Findings At Portland International Airport, Julie Fukuda, Carole Hallett
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 2nd (2000)
Pacific Habitat Services, Inc. (PHS), under contract with the Port of Portland (Port), trapped, banded, and relocated red-tailed hawks at the Portland International Airport (PDX) in Portland, Oregon, beginning in October 1999. Although the Port has a program to deal with wildlife hazards to aircraft operations, raptor prey base management and hazing hadn’t effectively reduced wildlife hazards. Nineteen birdstrikes occurred in September, 1999. Prior to this season, birdstrikes ranged from 0 to 11 within a one-month period. Thus, immediate action was needed to reduce raptor abundance on the airfield. In fall and winter of 1999, PHS captured and relocated fifteen …

The Webvolution’S Impact On Vocational Classrooms And Administration, Elaine S. Stith
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
We are eyewitnesses of a Webvolution; a revolution brought about by the explosion of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW). Few innovations have been embraced more quickly than the Internet. The current trend of the Internet will change the face of education, as we know it. Almost every public school in the United States has Internet access and other countries are adopting these technologies at a rapid pace. The Internet is perhaps the first truly global environment. This paper will explore the potential of utilizing the WWW as a resource for vocational classrooms and administration. It provides informative …

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
Learning new skills or acquiring new knowledge is becoming part of life for most adults. Indeed, the paradigm of life-long learning has found advocates not only in individuals but also policy-makers. In the information age, life-long learning will be increasingly dependent on the successful application of information and communication technology. This paper outlines recent curriculum developments of this department, highlighting information technology applications for course delivery and management. In catering for the changing needs of local industry, the department seeks to establish partnership with local companies, aiming to expand the department’s scope on life-long learning provision at the same time.

Subject Choice By Students In Year 12 In Australian Secondary Schools, Sue Fullarton, John Ainley
Subject Choice By Students In Year 12 In Australian Secondary Schools, Sue Fullarton, John Ainley
LSAY Research Reports
Choices that are in the subjects studied in senior secondary school influence differences in access to higher education, vocational education and training, and to labour market outcomes. Previous studies have shown that students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, those from private schools, high early school achievers and students from non-English speaking backgrounds are more likely to participate in the courses that are avenues to higher education and the professions. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to participate in courses that lead to vocational education and training or more often to entry into the labour market without any further formal education or training. …

Effect Of The Direction Of The Blast On Vegetation Recovery Within The Zone Of Devastation Created By The May 18, 1980 Eruption Of Mount St. Helens, Washington, Dmitri Barkovsky
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A number of different remote sensing techniques were used to analyze Landsat TM image data in order to study vegetation recovery patterns at three locations within the zone of devastation of Mount St. Helens (MSH). Prior to the May 18, 1980 eruption, the vegetation in the area ofMSH was characterized by mature coniferous forest disturbed only by a few clearcuts, according to analysis of Landsat MSS data. As a result of the MSH eruption, more than 600 sq. km of the area predominantly north of the volcano were severely devastated by a number of volcanic events such as phreatic explosions, …
Comparative Analysis Of Thebes And Kirk Lithic Technology And Home Range Implications In Southwestern Indiana, Mark E. Cantin
Comparative Analysis Of Thebes And Kirk Lithic Technology And Home Range Implications In Southwestern Indiana, Mark E. Cantin
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Early Archaic populations are typically characterized as highly mobile forager groups with expansive home ranges, though little distinction is made between systems of penecontemporaneous groups. This thesis will investigate and compare home range size, technology, and material type and quality selection practices between two Early Archaic populations as manifested by Kirk and Thebes Cluster projectile points in a data set recovered from southwestern Indiana. The mechanisms behind and the relationships between chert selection and mobility will be shown as a complex feedback loop. As such, the role of curation, embeddedness, and risk management in technological organization and the potential influence …
