Influence Of Home And School Environments On The Academic Performance Of Chinese-Australian And Anglo-Australian Students Studying At An Academically-Oriented High School In Perth, Western Australia, Ranbir Singh Malik Jan 2000

Influence Of Home And School Environments On The Academic Performance Of Chinese-Australian And Anglo-Australian Students Studying At An Academically-Oriented High School In Perth, Western Australia, Ranbir Singh Malik

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Although minority status has been associated with low academic achievement, the “high Asian achieving syndrome" remains as one of the unresolved sociological puzzles. Consistent evidence suggests that regardless of the family status, children from the Asian migrant families, settled in the industrialised countries, tend to perform academically better than their counterparts from the dominant group. This disparity is attributed to a number of factors, which taken separately, do not address this complex issue. In Australia little research has been done to compare the home environment and school experiences of children coming from Chinese-Australian and Anglo-Australian families even though the number …

Parents' Construction Of Emotional Abuse And Neglect Of Children Aged Birth To Six Years In A Rural District In Uganda, Edreda Tuwangye Jan 2000

Parents' Construction Of Emotional Abuse And Neglect Of Children Aged Birth To Six Years In A Rural District In Uganda, Edreda Tuwangye

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Child abuse and neglect are endemic not only in Western countries but also in developing countries such as Uganda. An investigation was conducted to establish how parents living in rural Uganda construe child abuse and neglect. The study is of theoretical interest on two counts. First, there is evidence to suggest that Western accounts of child abuse and neglect may not apply to developing countries, a matter of importance given the dominance of Western research in the thinking of policy and intervention studies. Second, most of the research assumes that abuse and neglect are self-evident constructs and there is seldom …

Changes To The Distribution Of Posidonia Seagrass Communities Of James Point, In Response To The Development Of Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, Anthony Muscara

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Australia’s oceans provide many economic and environmental benefits both nationally and regionally, and are of particular social, recreational and cultural importance. Western Australia's most intensively used marine embayment is Cockburn Sound, is Cockburn Sound, it supports one of the most extensive Posidoni seagrass communities in Western Australia. The protected coastal waters off the southern metropolitan coastline of Perth arc utilised intensively for industrial, commercial and recreational purposes. Over the past 50 years, wastes have been routinely discharged into Cockburn Sound causing extensive phytoplankton and epiphyte blooms, particularly during the 1960's and 1970's. The development of industrial and naval facilities and …

Education Virtual Communities, Stanley Andersen Jan 2000

Education Virtual Communities, Stanley Andersen

Theses

Distance Learning is a prime area for expansion of a new internet business/community model since there is currently no broad-based application servicing this function. The goal of this project is to investigate and prepare the basis for a proposal to a financial backer such as AT&T or one of the large internet service providers. A major part of the paper will investigate the current state of the distance learning internet environment and how to improve it. One of the main improvements concerns the need for a standard interface, which should include a learning tool such as RIT's colloquy software. Continuing/lifelong …

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler Jan 2000

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler

Theses

In 1995, the NSF officially shut down the NSFNet backbone, thereby ending the nascent Internets early architecture as a single backbone network. Today, the Internet is a group of loosely interconnected networks run by many diverse companies. These interconnections are in no way controlled by any industry or government agency, and are therefore held together only by the market demands of the Internet community. Although the FCC has traditionally maintained a stance of "unregulation" of all information and computer networks, they have increasingly show interest in ensuring the rapid deployment of Internet access. In addition, as more and more critical …

The Prosecutor's Ethical Duty To Seek Exculpatory Evidence In Police Hands: Lessons From England, Stanley Z. Fisher Jan 2000

The Prosecutor's Ethical Duty To Seek Exculpatory Evidence In Police Hands: Lessons From England, Stanley Z. Fisher

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court in Kyles v. Whitley affirmed the prosecutor's duty under Brady v. Maryland to disclose exculpatory evidence to the defense, even if the police have not revealed the evidence to the prosecutor. According to the Court, prosecutors are responsible for ensuring that police communicate relevant evidence to her office. How should prosecutors implement that responsibility? Both England and the United States require prosecutors to disclose exculpatory evidence known to the police, but they take radically different approaches to implementing the prosecutor's duty. The English have legislated a comprehensive regulatory framework for police record keeping and revelation of case …

Variability In Winter Mass Balance Of Northern Hemisphere Glaciers And Relations With Atmospheric Circulation, Gregory J. Mccabe, Andrew G. Fountain, Mark Dyurgerov Jan 2000

Variability In Winter Mass Balance Of Northern Hemisphere Glaciers And Relations With Atmospheric Circulation, Gregory J. Mccabe, Andrew G. Fountain, Mark Dyurgerov

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

An analysis of variability in the winter mass balance (WMB) of 22 glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere indicates two primary modes of variability that explain 46% of the variability among all glaciers. The first mode of variability characterizes WMB variability in Northern and Central Europe and the second mode primarily represents WMB variability in northwestern North America, but also is related to variability in WMB of one glacier in Europe and one in Central Asia. These two modes of WMB variability are explained by variations in mesoscale atmospheric circulation which are driving forces of variations in surface temperature and precipitation. …

Changes In Dryness/Wetness In China During The Last 529 Years., Jie Song

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Historical written records of weather conditions that affect agriculture and living conditions in China can serve as a proxy for instrumental observations of the relative wetness and dryness, or precipitation amounts, for periods of time dating back to at least AD 1470. The dryness:wetness index (DW) data at 100 selected sites and at a subset of 25 sites with entirely continuous data indicate that during the growing season the number of sites with dryness increased rapidly in the 20th century, in contrast to a gradual increase and leveling off of wetness since the 18th century. Dry conditions existed mostly in …

From International Treaties To Internet Norms: The Evolution Of International Trademark Disputes In The Internet Age, Ajay K. Mehrotra, Marcelo Halpern

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In today's dynamic, digital economy, there is a global clash between geographically bounded intellectual property rights and the limitless reach of the Internet. Traditionally, discrepancies in international intellectual property rights, such as trademark disputes, have been resolved through time-consuming, multilateral state-to-state treaty negotiations that have global harmonization as the primary goal.

With the explosion of e-commerce and the birth of a New Economy, however, such a traditional process is no longer economically viable. Instead, a new approach towards international intellectual property is fast emerging - one that rests not on treaties between multiple states, but on the private contracting of …

The Overlooked Concern With The Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, Katy Hull Jan 2000

The Overlooked Concern With The Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, Katy Hull

UC Law Journal

This Note examines the concerns surrounding the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act ("UCITA"), a uniform commercial code for software licenses and other computer information transactions proposed by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. Since case law addressing software licensing is currently inconsistent, some scholars believe that this uniform, nation-wide set of laws would provide for greater stability and predictability. Still, some critics of the UCITA worry that it fails to address consumer protection concerns. Few criticisms, however, have focussed on the UCITA's potential impact on the software licensing industry. Due to the growing importance of that industry …

Globalization And The U.S. Market In Legal Services: Shifting Identities, Carole Silver Jan 2000

Globalization And The U.S. Market In Legal Services: Shifting Identities, Carole Silver

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The article examines the international activities of various segments of the U.S. legal profession and analyzes the impact of these activities on the domestic market in legal services. It takes an empirical approach to the question of how international activities have shaped the profession by chronicling the foreign office activity of more than 70 of the largest U.S. firms. The data presented facilitates new insight into the ways in which U.S. lawyers participate in the international market in legal services. The article reveals that internationalization has resulted in the homogenization of the largest U.S. firms, as they increasingly compete for …

Monoglossic Policies For A Heteroglossic Culture: Misinterpreted Multilingualism In Modern Galicia, José Del Valle Jan 2000

Monoglossic Policies For A Heteroglossic Culture: Misinterpreted Multilingualism In Modern Galicia, José Del Valle

Publications and Research

This article critically discusses the representations of language that, since the 1980s, have been informing language policy in Galicia. Data from Galicia´s Sociolinguisic Map are re-analyzed and an argument is made that current language policies are grounded in a misinterpretation of how speakers map language on to identity.

An Examination Of Commercial Medicinal Plant Harvests, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon, Shannon Michelle Campbell Jan 2000

An Examination Of Commercial Medicinal Plant Harvests, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon, Shannon Michelle Campbell

Dissertations and Theses

During the past fifteen years, non-timber or special for(?St products have become an important economic resource in the Pacific Northwest. These products are primarily derived from understory species and contribute approximately $200 million to the regional economy. Medicinal plants are a little researched component of the non-timber forest product industry that relies on cultivated and wildcrafted ( or wild-collected) medicinal plant species. This study examines the commercial extraction of wild crafted medicinal plants from Mount Hood National Forest. Specifically, this study documents the medicinal plant species extracted from Mount Hood National Forest, their annual yield amounts, harvesting methods, and the …

Land Use And Growth Impacts From Highway Capacity Increases, Thomas W. Sanchez

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This analysis examined the historical relationship between land use changes and the location of capacity increasing highway projects in the State of Oregon from 1970 to 1990. Aerial photography for 18 cities was used to delineate the extent of urban development in each time period. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to assemble the data. Using this data, a logit regression model tested the significance of geographic variables such as proximity to highway projects, land use zoning classification, city size, and other spatial characteristics. The analytical methods used in this study incorporated a set of commonly used techniques to …

A total of 4 75 students were enrolled in Years 8 to 10 at the school in 1999. A modified version of Student Attitudes Towards Social Studies (Moroz 1996) questionnaire with 94 items, was utilised to gauge secondary student attitudes towards the learning area. A total of 421 lower secondary students participated in the survey. The data was analysed using the statistical software package SPSS 9. 0 for Windows, where descriptive …

Representations Of Class, Social Realism And Region In "Eleven Months In Bunbury" By James Ricks, Joshua J. K. Ledger Jan 2000

Representations Of Class, Social Realism And Region In "Eleven Months In Bunbury" By James Ricks, Joshua J. K. Ledger

Theses : Honours

The aim of this thesis is to explore representations of class, social realism and region in Eleven months in Bunbury by James Ricks. This novel stands outside dominant literary theory in its representations of class, realism and regionalism. It also presents opportunities to consider ideology and class through the eyes of a working class person, in the language of the class that it depicts. Thus it speaks to a class which rarely has its point of view and lives represented in conventional literature. It is therefore a useful literary and social document.

The Influence Of Cave Tourism On Co2 And Temperature In Baiyun Cave, Hebei, China, Linhua Song, Wei Xiaoning, Liang Fuyuan

International Journal of Speleology

Baiyun Cave in Hebei Province is one of the main show caves in North China. The speleothem landscape is wonderful, but strongly weathered. In order to set up the relationship between visitor flow and CO2 content and temperature, these parameters were measured at observation sites No. 1 and No. 2 in the tourist peak period of May Day Holiday from May 1 to May 7, 2000. and general tourist season August and October, 2000. The results show that visitor flow strongly affects the fluctuations of cave CO2 content and temperature, that the cave topography and dimensions affect the …

New Rare Cave Minerals From The Perolas-Santana Karst System (São Paulo State, Brazil), Paolo Forti, Ermanno Galli, Antonio Rossi

International Journal of Speleology

The Perolas-Santana karst system (São Paulo State, Brazil) has been partially studied from the mineralogical point of view. The present paper will contribute to the knowledge of the minerals in these caves, describing the occurrence of euhedral celestite crystals and of a rather rare mineral for a cavern environment: lithiophorite. Thanks to these new discoveries the Perolas-Santana karst system becomes one of the most important in Brazil from a mineralogical point of view. Finally, the result of the chemical analyses carried out on this newly discovered Monoxyhydroxide put in evidence a zonation in the distribution of the different elements which …
