Streamflow And Suspended Sediment Transfer To Lake Sophia, Cornwallis Island, Nunavut, Canada, C. Braun, D. R. Hardy, R. S. Bradley, Michael Retelle
All Faculty Scholarship
To ascertain the climatic controls on sediment transport to Lake Sophia, Cornwallis Island, Nunavut, Canada, we made detailed hydrological and meteorological measurements in the Sophia River watershed through the 1994 melt season. Streamflow and suspended sediment transport are limited, on an annual time scale, by the supply of snow and sediment in the watershed. Suspended sediment yield from the watershed was only 0.46 t km-2, which is lower than any previously published yield for a stream in the High Arctic. Snowmelt runoff accounted for 88% of the annual suspended sediment load, whereas 6 and 9% were transported in response to …

Mountaintop Removal Mining: An Environmental Impact Assessment (Eia) Scoping Exercise And Impact Assessment Of Mining Activities On Aquatic Resources., Jeff Lee Hansbarger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mountaintop Removal Mining (MTR) is a controversial topic in West Virginia. This controversy includes the people of the areas mined, local politicians, and many aspects of the mining itself. This thesis included two main objectives. The first objective was to analyze MTR, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and the specific impacts arising from MTR. The second objective was to develop impact matrices using information from the first objective. Included within the analysis is a critical investigation of past EIAs used to assess mining activities. Special attention has been directed towards aquatic resource impacts and their documentation and validity. Methods included a …

Production Of Urban Space In Kenya: Central-Local Government Power Relations In Mediating Space In Athi River Town., Francis Tama Koti
Production Of Urban Space In Kenya: Central-Local Government Power Relations In Mediating Space In Athi River Town., Francis Tama Koti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Centrally controlled political and economic systems are popular among Third World countries. They however, become problematic particularly in rapidly growing urban areas where different forces compete for scarce resources, hence calling for an understanding of the nature of the relationships between the different forces that produce the urban environment. In Kenya, the basic assumption is that urban space is mediated by the local state. The author uses Athi River town, as a case study, through which survey questionnaires and informal interviews are conducted with key personnel of Mavoko Municipal Council on one hand, and central government ministries operating within the …

Toward Improving The Paper Map: Exploring And Implementing Digital And Virtual Campus Maps For West Virginia University., Thomas Luke Ritz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research examines significant design and map development issues in development of digital and virtual campus maps for West Virginia University. The theoretical frameworks of traditional cartography and digital mapping technologies reveal the interconnections between the elements of good map design and the complexities of mapping in the digital environment. The development of the campus maps for this research are part of a project that represents a working agreement between West Virginia University and the West Virginia State GIS Technical Center. Background information on the campus map project is presented to place the project in context and to illustrate the …

Grassroots Organizations And Gis: Assessing The Role Of Geographical Information And Gis In Grassroots Watershed Organizations In West Virginia., Jessica L. Spicer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A growing number of organizations, especially “grassroots” organizations are seeking to make use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geographical information. In most cases, however, the use and potential use or benefits of GIS for “grassroots” organizations have been far from realized. The overall goal of this project is to explore grassroots awareness of, understanding of, use of, and proposed use of GIS for assessing watershed issues and to do this in the context of the issue raised by the GIS and society debate. The use of four West Virginia watershed case studies served to identify some of the major …

Cellular Towers And Community Land-Use Issues: A Case Study Of Harpers Ferry And Jefferson County, West Virginia., Sherry Lee Kelly
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, communities all over have found themselves caught up in a land-use controversy over the siting of cellular towers and antennas. One community in particular, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, found itself fighting over a tower that threatened the town’s historical and cultural landscapes. This research presents the controversy over cellular tower siting and examines Harpers Ferry’s unique situation, concerns, and ultimate victory over governing forces. It also examines the broader themes that continue to stir controversy in the town whose scenery and beauty was deemed by Thomas Jefferson to be “worth a …

Evidence For Fluvial-Controlled Coal Deposition In The Upper Tongue River Member (Fort Union Formation, Paleocene) Powder River Basin, Wyoming., Coen Michael Bauders
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent exploration in the Powder River basin has targeted shallow, coal-bed methane, and basin reserves may be as high as 39 trillion cubic feet. Both coal and sandstone beds serve as target methane reservoirs; however, the thick, persistent nature of the upper Tongue River Member coals makes them easier to correlate and map than any sandstone body. Correlating these coals and considering the differential compaction model for shallow structural development may help shed light on recognizable patterns in clastic-sediment and coal distribution. This study had a threefold purpose: (1) establish a regional stratigraphic framework for the upper Tongue River Member …

A Comparison Of The Profiles Of Successful And Unsuccessful Candidates For College Presidencies In The State College System Of West Virginia., Marie Ellen Carter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Candidates (N = 609) for six presidencies in the State College System of West Virginia between 1995 and 1998 were studied and a comparison was made between successful candidates (n = 93) and unsuccessful candidates (n = 516). Successful candidates were defined as those who were judged by the search and screening committees to be best qualified to be interviewed. Candidate application packets and search committee records were the source of data. Independent variables included positions held by candidates at the time of application, baccalaureate graduation dates, education levels, major fields of graduate study, gender, and locations at the time …
Revised Glacial Margins And Wisconsin Meltwater Paleoflood Hydrology In Slippery Rock Creek Basin, Central Western Pennsylvania, Gary John D'Urso
Revised Glacial Margins And Wisconsin Meltwater Paleoflood Hydrology In Slippery Rock Creek Basin, Central Western Pennsylvania, Gary John D'Urso
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Glacial margins mapped in Slippery Rock Creek basin during the 1950s are problematic. The number of sedimentological, mineralogical, petrological, and textural analyses used to distinguish glacial drifts in the southern portion of the basin were inadequate to resolve the margins. Furthermore, misidentification of man-made deposits as glacial drift led to erroneous interpretations regarding the extent and character of pre-Wisconsin glacial deposits, and appears to have influenced subsequent soil mapping. Canadian Shield erratic weathering was the primary tool used in this study to re-investigate the glacial margins. Erratics display one of three distinctive weathering rinds, so glacial deposits can be differentiated …
Secession, War And Rebirth: The Civil War In West Virginia's South Branch Valley Of The Potomac., Stephen Garth Smith
Secession, War And Rebirth: The Civil War In West Virginia's South Branch Valley Of The Potomac., Stephen Garth Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia's South Branch Valley of the Potomac River played a crucial, but little studied, role in the American Civil War. Writing of the August 7, 1864, Battle of Moorefield, historian Robert K. Krick has noted that it “has received far less attention than it deserves.†In this work, it will be demonstrated that not only the August 7, 1864, Battle of Moorefield, but the conflict in the region in general is deserving of in-depth study. The geographic location and the plantation culture of the South Branch Valley favored its political and economic connection to Confederate eastern Virginia. Nevertheless, with …

Appalachian Special Education Administrators: The Extent Of The Relationship Of Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity To Specific Dimensions Of Stress., Pamela Kay Kohner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined the extent of the relationship between the separate constructs of role conflict (RC) and role ambiguity (RA) with four dimensions of stress. A sampling of special education administrators from the Appalachian states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia participated. Demographic characteristics were combined with RC or RA's relationship to four dimensions of stress to determine if a predictive pattern could be identified. A return rate of 80% was attained from the 114 randomly selected participants. Role variables were examined with the Role Questionnaire (Rizzo, House, & Lirtzman, 1970). The Administrative Stress Index (ASI) (Gmelch & Torelli, …

A Failed Eldorado: British Trusteeship, Luyia Land Rights And The Kakamega Gold Rush, 1930-1952., Priscilla Muronji Shilaro
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study analyzes the operations of British trusteeship with regard to Luyia land rights in Western Kenya between 1930 and 1952, using the Kakamega gold rush as a case study. It examines the determinant factors and interests, both imperial and local, that influenced and shaped the promulgation and adoption of the Native Land Trust Ordinance, 1930; and details how the gold discovery in North Kavirondo reserve in 1931 led to drastic land policy reversal entailed in the Native Land Trust (Amendment) Ordinance, 1932. The study argues that the imperial government, the colonial state, and all institutions charged with executing the …

Amatory Jurisprudence And The Querelle Des Lois, Peter Goodrich
Amatory Jurisprudence And The Querelle Des Lois, Peter Goodrich
Articles
It is my view, and here, no doubt, I am pre-empting my conclusion, that what literary and feminist historicism recognizes as the querelle des femmes, the debate as to the status and political role of women, is in fact underpinned and motivated by a much less explicit, yet nonetheless portentous, querelle des lois. The querelle des femmes, in other words, was always a polemic as to the legal status of women, as to their definition and role in theology and jurisprudence, canon and civil law. More than that, however, what the recovery of amatory jurisprudence can help to show is …

Understanding Cyclic Behavior In Tourism Destinations: Analysis Of Theories And Concept For A New Strategic Management Model, Beverly Foster
Understanding Cyclic Behavior In Tourism Destinations: Analysis Of Theories And Concept For A New Strategic Management Model, Beverly Foster
Theses
The purpose of this study was to gather and analyze information on lifecycle theories that may provide tourist destinations with a better understanding on how to have more control over their long-term sustainability. An extensive literature review was conducted that resulted in identifying and analyzing four applicable models and theories. As a result of this analysis, the researcher concluded that these four theories and models do not independently nor collectively offer a single, comprehensive working model for destinations to use in evaluating and monitoring their strategy for long term success. To help bridge this gap and point the way toward …
Localism And Regionalism, Richard Briffault
Localism And Regionalism, Richard Briffault
Faculty Scholarship
Localism and regionalism are normally seen as contrasting, indeed conflicting, conceptions of metropolitan area governance. Localism in this context refers to the view that the existing system of a large number of relatively small governments wielding power over such critical matters as local land use regulation, local taxation, and the financing of local public services ought to be preserved. The meaning of regionalism is less clearly defined and proposals for regional governance vary widely, but most advocates of regionalism would shift some authority from local governments, restrict local autonomy, or, at the very least, constrain the ability of local governments …

The Abundance And Distribution Of Arthropods From Sandstone Outcrops In Coffee County, Georgia, F. Michael Mcaloon
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Broxton Rocks Nature Preserve, a 1,233-hectare preserve containing late Pleistocene sandstone (Altamaha grit) outcrops of various sizes and topographies in a conifer-dominated loblolly pine - hardwood forest, represents a unique habitat to the coastal plain of Georgia. Using modified pitfall traps, I sampled arthropods in four subhabitats (bare rock, lichens, ecotone, wiregrass) at Broxton Rocks between January and November 1999. A total of 312,006 arthropods belonging to four classes (Arachnida, Diplopoda, Chilopoda, Insecta) represented by 24 orders was trapped. The numbers of arthropods varied among habitat types, and over the collection dates (P

Perceptions Of The Visionary Leadership Of Assistant Principals In Georgia Middle Schools, Christopher John Lemieux
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
This study was intended to explore the visionary leadership of assistant principals in public middle schools. A study of this type conducted on a statewide basis provided empirical information on the visionary leadership of assistant principals as perceived by themselves and their respective teachers in Georgia middle schools. Since a limited amount of research existed on the visionary leadership role of middle school assistant principals, this study helped to fill a void in the current professional literature. Quantitative research methodology was used to analyze data generated from The Leadership Profile surveys, principals' middle school concept implementation surveys, and the assistant …

Religion And Modernity: Ritual Transformations And The Reconstruction Of Space And Time, Chee Kiong Tong, Lily Kong
Religion And Modernity: Ritual Transformations And The Reconstruction Of Space And Time, Chee Kiong Tong, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper, we use the case of Chinese religion in Singapore to examine the relationships between religion and modernity, and between social processes, on the one hand, and spatial conceptions, forms and structures and temporal practices, on the other. Specifically, we look at how traditional Chinese rituals are being modified, reinterpreted and invented to fit with modern living. Such ritual transformations entail reconstructed notions of space and time. Through such transformations, modernity does not simply lead to the demise of religious beliefs and practices but allows for a continued role for religion in providing a meaning system for Chinese …

This supplement is published in conjunction with the Interim Meeting of the International Sociological Association, Research Committee on the History of Sociology (RCHS) in Torun, Poland, June 1-4, 2000. As many of my colleagues from the United States travel to Europe this summer for the interim meeting in the historic city of Torun, it seems especially appropriate to recall the trans-Atlantic educational adventures of one of our American sociological pioneers.
George Elliott Howard (1849-1928), president of the American Sociological Society in 1917, was one of those American scholars who recognized the value of European training at a time when opportunities …

Tanah Rizab Melayu Di Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur : Satu Kajian Kes Terhadap Aspek Perumahan Di Kampung Dato' Keramat, Ani Ahmad
Student Works (2000-2009)
Malay Reservation land (MRL) was introduced in t he Malaya during the British administration. The first Malay Reservation Land Enactment was enacted in 1913. The main objective of the reservation was to protect Malay lands from falling into the hands of non-Malay. However, because of the rapid development and urbanisation, the existence of MRL located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur was left backward from development. The main characteristic of these area was only a medium Malay housing area. Kampung Dato' Keramat strategically MRL area located after Kampung Baru facing the same fate. These MRL was identify by various housing …

This paper explores the history of legal education in twentieth century British Columbia. The period covers the transition from qualification by apprenticeship to the foundation of Canada's first post-WWII Faculty of Law - the beginning of modern legal education in Canada. Issues addressed include the moral vision of legal education, gender and the legal profession (the admission of women lawyers), race-based exclusions, the question of whether communists could be qualified as lawyers, and the evolution of legal curriculum from the age of moral reform to the era of narrowly technocratic notions of legal knowledge.

The Market And Ethics: The Case Of The 1994 Decision By The Clinton Administration To Delink China's Human Rights Record From Most-Favored-Nation Status, Susan C. Morris
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Amid the globalization of markets and the interdependence of states, human rights violations throughout the world still persist. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the economic interdependence of nations and the moral responsibilities of nations by examining the case of the 1994 decision by the Clinton administration to delink China's human rights practices from most-favored-nation status.
The annual 1997 Freedom House world survey of human rights rated China at its lowest point and quoted that “the regime continues to have one of the worst human rights records in the world.”1 Yet despite China's ongoing human …
