Environmental Education Programming For The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service., John William Branch Jan 2000

Environmental Education Programming For The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service., John William Branch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Environmental education is a component of community-based education programs. Environmental education in the United States and in Louisiana was described (Objectives 1 and 2). Because of rapid changes in environmental science, and the responses of citizens to environmental topics, extension faculty need additional programming techniques and more process and strategic skills training. Programming techniques and skills training were reviewed (Objective 3). Extension has included representatives from key state and federal agencies with expertise in, and responsibility for, environmental topics on its environmental education advisory committees. The Delphi technique was utilized in this study, with agency representatives as panelists, to determine …

The Gender Revolution, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 2000

The Gender Revolution, Nancy Topping Bazin

Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) In the fall of 1958, when I arrived at Stanford University to begin a Ph.D., the all-male faculty of the English department were still grumbling in the corridors about the last woman they had hired. They had found her too assertive, so they did not want to repeat that mistake. Later, at a session on getting jobs, the department chair told us that females would be hired "at one level of university lower than what they deserved." In 1960, like the other silent students, I accepted that pattern as the way the world worked. Yet the injustice of …

Shoreline Bluff Failures: A Gis Assessment Of Susceptibility And Risk For Lake Erie's North Central Shore (Ontario), Nathan Joel Badger Jan 2000

Shoreline Bluff Failures: A Gis Assessment Of Susceptibility And Risk For Lake Erie's North Central Shore (Ontario), Nathan Joel Badger

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

One of the characteristic features of the north shore of Lake Erie is its steep, eroding bluffs. Combined with an increase in human presence and pressures at the shoreline, the failure of these slopes has become hazardous. Over the past two decades alone, slope failures have been responsible for millions of dollars of damage to shoreline property, as well as the deaths and near deaths of a number of individuals. Despite the seriousness of this hazard, few studies have identified specific hazard areas and their associated risk of failure along Lake Erie's north shore, and other reaches in the Great …

Comparison Of The Adsorbed Mercury Screening Method With Cold-Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry For Determination Of Mercury In Soil, Donald F. Easterling, Edward S. Hovanitz, Kenneth W. Street Jan 2000

Comparison Of The Adsorbed Mercury Screening Method With Cold-Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry For Determination Of Mercury In Soil, Donald F. Easterling, Edward S. Hovanitz, Kenneth W. Street

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

A field screening method for the determination of elemental mercury in environmental soil samples involves the thermal desorption of the mercury from the sample onto gold and then the thermal desorption from the gold to a goldfilm mercury vapor analyzer. This field screening method contains a large number of conditions that could be optimized for the various types of soils encountered. In this study, the conditions were optimized for the determination of mercury in silty clay materials, and the results were comparable to the coldvapor atomic absorption spectrophotometric method of determination. This paper discusses the benefits and disadvantages of employing …

The Effect Of Rock Creep On The Morphology Of Steep-Sloped Sections Of The Niagara Escarpment (Ontario), John Barlow Jan 2000

The Effect Of Rock Creep On The Morphology Of Steep-Sloped Sections Of The Niagara Escarpment (Ontario), John Barlow

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis addresses the post-glacial development of the Niagara Cuesta between Hamilton and Collingwood. Conventional thinking on the escarpment during the Holocene suggests that the present morphology developed rapidly following deglaciation due to periglacial processes (Straw, 1966/Tovell 1992). The disruption of the preglacial drainage pattern by drift has meant the escarpment has not been subject to extensive fluvial action along its base, resulting in an extremely slow rate of retreat (Bird, 1980). The concept that the escarpment is a relict feature therefore pervades the modem literature. The apparent motion of the blocks at the face of the escarpment (Hintz, I997) …

Community Participation And Awareness In Solid Waste Management : A Study Of Sample Communities In Petaling Jaya, Awadiar Vijaya Jan 2000

Community Participation And Awareness In Solid Waste Management : A Study Of Sample Communities In Petaling Jaya, Awadiar Vijaya

Student Works (2000-2009)

An efficient solid waste management could also determine the living standards of the people. In order to render quality solid waste management, communities together play important role in the process. Therefore, a research has been conducted among the selected residents of Petaling Jaya, to know the current awareness and participation levels of the community. Certain Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) in the area of Petaling Jaya have been interviewed to gain a better knowledge of their function and contribution in building awareness of the community toward promoting a systematic waste disposal. In this respect, a research …

Mapping The Boulder City Wetlands Using A Global Positioning System (Gps) And A Geographic Information System (Gis), Jennifer Lea Bishop Jan 2000

Mapping The Boulder City Wetlands Using A Global Positioning System (Gps) And A Geographic Information System (Gis), Jennifer Lea Bishop

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Boulder City Wetlands is a constructed wetlands park located in Boulder City, Nevada, approximately 23 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently, a baseline study of water quality is being conducted in the Boulder City Wetlands. This baseline study of the wetlands is an important step in understanding the development of the Boulder City Wetlands over time. As wastewater is eventually introduced into the existing community tap water running through the wetlands, it is expected that the nitrogen within the water will enhance the growth of vegetation in the surrounding area. Comparing the vegetation growth over time is only …

Communicating The Risks And Hazards Of Methylmercury To The Ojibwe Population, Glenna Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fatal poisonings due to the consumption of fish containing high concentrations of methylmercury have been well documented, and demonstrate that the consumption of mercury-contaminated fish and other organisms can contribute to adverse human health effects. Native Americans of the Great Lakes region are one of the populations potentially subjected to greater concentrations of methylmercury than the general population because fishery is an integral part of their culture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Ojibwe of the Great Lakes region's understanding of the risks and hazards associated with the consumption of fish contaminated with methylmercury and increase their …

Changes To The Distribution Of Posidonia Seagrass Communities Of James Point, In Response To The Development Of Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, Anthony Muscara

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Australia’s oceans provide many economic and environmental benefits both nationally and regionally, and are of particular social, recreational and cultural importance. Western Australia's most intensively used marine embayment is Cockburn Sound, is Cockburn Sound, it supports one of the most extensive Posidoni seagrass communities in Western Australia. The protected coastal waters off the southern metropolitan coastline of Perth arc utilised intensively for industrial, commercial and recreational purposes. Over the past 50 years, wastes have been routinely discharged into Cockburn Sound causing extensive phytoplankton and epiphyte blooms, particularly during the 1960's and 1970's. The development of industrial and naval facilities and …
