An Assessment Of The Intellectual Property Rights Provisions Of The Convention On Biological Diversity And The World Trade Organization Agreements, Joel Dantes Adriano
An Assessment Of The Intellectual Property Rights Provisions Of The Convention On Biological Diversity And The World Trade Organization Agreements, Joel Dantes Adriano
Graduate Student's Output
The study assesses the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements. It explains the conflict between the two agreements over IPR and attempts to answer how their differences may be best addressed. The study uses text interpretation, mainly hermeneutics which was originally used for theological studies but which is now an accepted method that emphasizes detailed examination of texts and meanings. The study finds three major areas where CBD and WTO IPR Agreements are not consistent with each other. These are through : (1) national sovereignty over biological resources, (2) …

A Toxicity Assessment Of Total Dissolved Solid Ions In Mine Effluent Using Two Common Bioassays: The 22-Hour Microtox Assay And A S. Carpricornutum Growth Assay, Jane Benton Leblond
Chemistry and Biochemistry
This research evaluated two microassays and a synthetic TDS standard to measure the effects of elevated TDS from mine effluent on biota of freshwater systems. Field samples from Red Dog and Fort Knox mines were tested on Selenastrum capricornutum and the MicroTox assay, and compared to the synthetic standard. Results indicate that the synthetic TDS standard is a poor representation of produced waters with similar total TDS concentrations. Additionally, no correlation was found between the toxicological responses of the two assays. Principle component analysis found the MicroTox assay to be most sensitive to cadmium and chloride. At concentrations present in …

Fisheries Research Report No. 120 - A 12-Month Survey Of Recreational Fishing In The Leschenault Estuary Of Western Australia During 1998, B E. Malseed, Neil R. Sumner, P C. Williamson
Fisheries Research Reports
A survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based fishing in the Leschenault Estuary was conducted between January 1998 and December 1998. The survey estimated the total annual boat-based recreational fishing effort as 33,392 fisher days, with 86% of this effort targeting blue swimmer crabs. The total annual shore-based recreational fishing effort was estimated to be 5,610 fisher days, with 88% of this effort targeting blue swimmer crabs.
The recreational blue swimmer crab catch from the Leschenault Estuary is substantial and exceeds the reported commercial catch. The estimated total recreational catch of blue swimmer crabs was 219,000 crabs or 45.7 tonnes. This …

An Examination Of Gasoline Pollutants From Two-Cycle Marine Engines Within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Brian Carter
An Examination Of Gasoline Pollutants From Two-Cycle Marine Engines Within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Brian Carter
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Jet skis are a very popular "toy" to have in the United States. They account for almost a third of all boat sales, and their numbers are growing rapidly. Unfortunately jet skis use two-cycle engines that pollute at unacceptable levels. Jet ski motors can emit up to 25% of its fuel right back into the water. This alarmed me and I wanted to take a deeper look into how bad jet skis pollute Las Vegas' primary water source. Lake Mead. I looked into how a two-cycle engine differs from a regular engine and I looked at the actual pollutants a …

Responses Of Sphagnum And Carex Peatlands To Ultraviolet-B Radiation, And A Meta-Analysis Of Uv-B Effects On Vascular Plants, Peter S. Searles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The severity of stratospheric ozone depletion in the temperate and polar latitudes has raised concerns about the sensitivity of terrestrial vegetation and ecosystems to solar ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation. This dissertation examined the responses of plants and microbes to solar UV-B for 3 years in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (55° S). This region is under the influence of the Antarctic "ozone hole" during the austral spring. Additionally, a quantitative review of the UV-B literature was conducted using a set of statistical techniques known as meta-analysis.
For the field studies in Tierra del Fuego, plots were established in a Sphagnum moss peatland …
