Analysis Of The Cabin Canyon Shear Zone In The Virgin Mountains : Implications For An Early Accretionary Province Boundary And Later Transpressional Zone., Jason Ray

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A newly discovered northeast-trending subvertical shear zone, up to 3 kilometers wide, forms the backbone of the Virgin Mountains in southern Nevada. This zone, named for excellent exposure in Cabin Canyon, contains a well-developed mylonitic foliation that records a complex history of movement and strain within the Virgin Mountains. The overall movement history is interpreted to involve a combination of northwest shortening deformation and dextral, northwest-side-up, oblique shear. The mylonites within the zone are comprised of amphibolites, granodiorites, a variety of meta-sedimentary rocks, and leuco-pegmatite dikes. The oldest rocks involved in shearing are similar to ~1.7 Ga of the Grand …

"Bound Together . . . By Blood And Soul": Donald Davidson's Strategic Retreat Into The Myth Of Life In The Old South, Carol Pigg Dec 2000

"Bound Together . . . By Blood And Soul": Donald Davidson's Strategic Retreat Into The Myth Of Life In The Old South, Carol Pigg

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Donald Davidson has often been called stubborn because of his refusal to let go of the Southern past and in his insistence that his writings be based on and in the regional concerns that he saw as fundamental to all Southern literature. In many ways, Davidson's loyalty to the Agrarian and Fugitive causes, which are best defined in these groups interest in keeping the South's history alive and maintaining an agrarian lifestyle, is his greatest contribution to the Southern and American literary canon. Despite this fact, though, Davidson is now, as he was during his lifetime, ignored because of the …

Design Methods For Auger Cip Piles In Compression, Giuliana A. Zelada, Richard Wesley Stephenson

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This Paper Reports on a Study of 43 Compression Load Tests (Five Fully Instrumented) and Ten Pullout Tests of Auger Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Piles in Sand. Eight Design Methods Reported in the Literature Were Used to Predict the Measured Pile Capacities. Ultimate Load Capacities of the ACEP Load Tests Were Determined using Two Different Definitions of Ultimate Capacity and Compared with Predictions. Load Transfer Behavior Was Determined from a Study of the Fully Instrumented Pile Tests and Compared to Predicted Values. Recommendations Are Made Regarding the Design Approach Most Appropriate for These Foundations and the Best Procedure for Estimating Ultimate Capacity …

Collaborative Learning: Principles, Practice And Potential In The English Language Classroom, William Littlewood Dec 2000

Collaborative Learning: Principles, Practice And Potential In The English Language Classroom, William Littlewood

PASAA

Students across a wide range of countries (including Thailand) express their liking for classroom learning activities in which they work purposefully in groups in order to achieve common goals. This mode of learning also lies at the heart of the philosophy and techniques of "collaborative learning." This paper presents briefly the principles which underlie collaborative learning. It describes a range of strategies and techniques which teachers can use in order to organize collaborative learning. Finally, it discusses how collaborative learning tasks fit into an overall framework for language learning and how they relate to the development of learner autonomy.

The Role Of Storytelling In Effective Family Literacy Programs, Barbara C. Palmer, Sara Marie Leiste, Kim D. James, Shirley M. Ellis

The family literacy movement, which emphasizes respect for diversity and the cultural heritage of participants, is gaining momentum. Acknowledging the importance of family-aseducator, researchers have searched for effective strategies to develop children's oral language and literacy more authentically. Bridging Physics And Communications: Experimental Detection And Analysis Of Web Site Users’ Paths In An Environment Of Free Choice, David M. Frye

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

A role for professional communicators to play in a postmodern context is to work as an experimentalist, designing a system that supports users’ free engagement with the content of the system, inviting people to engage that system, observing the ways in which those engagements proceed, and from those observations, learning how to refine the system to support more fruitful future engagements. The role serves to cultivate an environment in which users’ conversations with one another and their interaction with the system’s content may thrive. This thesis purposes that the experimentalist is a useful and practical role for a communicator in the current …
