Dynamical Systems And Mating Decision Rules, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan E. Butner Aug 2000

Dynamical Systems And Mating Decision Rules, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan E. Butner

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Dynamical simulations of male and female mating strategies illustrate how traits such as restrictedness constrain, and are constrained by, local ecology. Such traits cannot be defined solely by genotype or by phenotype, but are better considered as decision rules gauged to ecological inputs. Gangestad and Simpson's work draws attention to the need for additional bridges between evolutionary psychology and dynamical systems theory.

E-Commerce Systems: Architecture, Infrastructure, Model, And Development Methodology, A. Bajaj, Keng Siau Aug 2000

E-Commerce Systems: Architecture, Infrastructure, Model, And Development Methodology, A. Bajaj, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The last decade has seen tremendous growth in the world wide web (WWW) (Berners-Lee, Caillau, Luotonen, Nielsen, & Secret, 1994) and e-commerce, which now offers organizations and consumers a unique channel to deliver and purchase goods and services. E-commerce is popularly classified as B2B (business to business), B2C (business to consumer) and C2C (consumer to consumer). B2B e-commerce, which is currently the fastest growing segment of e-commerce (Fellenstein & Wood, 2000), consists of making more efficient the flow of goods and services across organizations. This efficiency is typically increased using standards for electronic data exchange, automating certain processes across organizations …

E-Business Curriculum In Action At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Keng Siau, S. Davis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Offering e-business/e-commerce courses no longer provides competitive advantages. They are now a competitive necessity. Schools already offering the courses are continuously refining the curriculum to keep up with the innovations in the area. Schools without these courses are frantically trying to put one together. Irrespective of whether a school is a leader or a lagger, all schools face the same problem -- how to keep the ebusiness curriculum up-to-date and relevant to industry. This article looks at the e-business curriculum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It presents our curriculum objectives and the lessons learned.

Distributed Power Control In Cdma Cellular Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Aly El-Osery Aug 2000

Distributed Power Control In Cdma Cellular Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Aly El-Osery

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In wireless cellular communication, it is essential to find effective means for power control of signals received from randomly dispersed users within one cell. Effective power control will heavily impact the system capacity. Distributed power control (DPC) is a natural choice for such purposes, because, unlike centralized power control, DPC does not require extensive computational power. Distributed power control should be able to adjust the power levels of each transmitted signal using only local measurements, so that, in a reasonable time, all users will maintain the desired signal-to-interference ratio. In this paper, we review different approaches for power control, focusing …

Quantifying Decoupling Capacitor Location, Jun Fan, James L. Knighten, Antonio Orlandi, Norman W. Smith, James L. Drewniak Aug 2000

Quantifying Decoupling Capacitor Location, Jun Fan, James L. Knighten, Antonio Orlandi, Norman W. Smith, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Decoupling capacitor location in DC power bus design is a critical design choice for which proven guidelines are not well established. The mutual inductance between two closely spaced vias can have a great impact on the coupling between an IC and a decoupling capacitor. This coupling is a function of the spacing between the IC and capacitor, and spacing between power and ground layers. The impact of the mutual inductance on decoupling, i.e., local versus global decoupling, was studied, using a circuit extraction approach based on a mixed-potential integral equation. Modeling indicates that local decoupling has benefits over global decoupling …

Experimental And Fdtd Study Of The Emi Performance Of An Open-Pin-Field Connector For Modules-On-Backplanes, Xiaoning Ye, Jim Nadolny, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff, Thomas Van Doren, Todd H. Hubing Aug 2000

Experimental And Fdtd Study Of The Emi Performance Of An Open-Pin-Field Connector For Modules-On-Backplanes, Xiaoning Ye, Jim Nadolny, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff, Thomas Van Doren, Todd H. Hubing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental measurements and numerical modeling were used to study the EMI performance of a module-on-backplane connector for various configurations of signal-return pin-outs. A commercially available open-pin-field connector was used in these results to connect between the mother-board and the daughter-card. The experimental techniques, based on measuring |S21|, included both common-mode current measurements and monopole near-field probe measurements. The FDTD method was used to provide numerical support of the near-field measurements and generally agreed with the measured results for frequencies up to 3 GHz. The FDTD method was also used to investigate the relationship between the radiated EMI at …

Aintegumenta Promotes Petal Identity And Acts As A Negative Regulator Of Agamous, Beth A. Krizek, Valerie Prost, Anthony Macias Aug 2000

Aintegumenta Promotes Petal Identity And Acts As A Negative Regulator Of Agamous, Beth A. Krizek, Valerie Prost, Anthony Macias

Faculty Publications

The Arabidopsis AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) gene has been shown previously to be involved in ovule development and in the initiation and growth of floral organs. Here, we show that ANT acts in additional processes during flower development, including repression of AGAMOUS (AG) in second whorl cells, promotion of petal epidermal cell identity, and gynoecium development. Analyses of ap2-1 ant-6 double mutants reveal that ANT acts redundantly with AP2 to repress AG in second whorl cells. The abaxial surface of ant petals contains features such as stomata and elongated, interdigitated cells that are not present on wild-type petals. …

Corporate Name Vs Brand Name: Demystification Of Controversy, B. C. Ghosh, Min Lie Chan, Wee Liang Tan Aug 2000

Corporate Name Vs Brand Name: Demystification Of Controversy, B. C. Ghosh, Min Lie Chan, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The board of directors worry about it, researchers paper it, and ad men talk about it. But few managers really know whether or not image affects the purchase of the company’s products - particularly in the consumer market” [Hardy 1970, pg. 70]. Up till today, there remains a general lack of understanding of the determinants and consequences of corporate associations, though researchers have begun to make inroads [Brown, 1997]. Addressing the above issue, the overall objective of this paper is to determine if there is any congruence between promoting consumer brand name in the FMCG industry and the retailers’ corporate …

A Meta-Analysis On Relationship Modeling Accuracy: Comparing Relational And Semantic Models, Qing Cao, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau Aug 2000

A Meta-Analysis On Relationship Modeling Accuracy: Comparing Relational And Semantic Models, Qing Cao, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic data modeling, such as entity-relationship (ER) modeling and extended/enhanced entity-relationship (EER) modeling, has emerged as an alternative to relational data modeling. The majority of research in data modeling suggests that the use of semantic data models leads to better performance. However the findings are not conclusive and sometimes inconsistent. In this research, we investigate modeling relationship correctness in relational and semantic models. The meta-analysis carried out in this research is an attempt to alleviate inconsistent results in previous studies.

The world is in the midst of a revolution in the way businesses perform commerce. Many industries who were in the past relatively low tech are now finding themselves in a situation where they must embrace technology and prepare to compete head-on using ECommerce. This paradigm shift in thinking and competition is creating opportunities and chaos. This paper examines the innovation capability of organizations in evaluating and deploying their E-Commerce strategies. An Innovation Strategy Model is used in this research as the theoretical foundation. The case study and survey research methodologies were selected. Data gathering and analysis are in progress. …

Telemip: Telecommunications-Enhanced Mobile Ip Architecture For Fast Intradomain Mobility, Subir Das, Archan Misra, Prathima Agrawal, Sajal K. Das Aug 2000

Telemip: Telecommunications-Enhanced Mobile Ip Architecture For Fast Intradomain Mobility, Subir Das, Archan Misra, Prathima Agrawal, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This article first surveys existing protocols for supporting IP mobility and then proposes an extension to the mobile IP architecture, called TeleMIP. Our architecture attempts to achieve smaller handoff latency by localizing the scope of most location update messages within an administrative domain or a geographical region. TeleMIP is intended for use in evolving third-generation wireless networks, and introduces a new logical entity, called the mobility agent, which provides a mobile node with a stable point of attachment in a foreign network. While the MA is functionally similar to conventional foreign agents, it is located at a higher level in …

Nephi And His Asherah, Daniel C. Peterson Jul 2000

Nephi And His Asherah, Daniel C. Peterson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Asherah was the chief goddess of the Canaanites. She was El’s wife and the mother and wet nurse of the other gods. At least some Israelites worshipped her over a period from the conquest of Canaan in the second millennium before Christ to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC (the time of Lehi’s departure with his family). Asherah was associated with trees—sacred trees. The rabbinic authors of the Jewish Mishna (second–third century ad) explain the asherah as a tree that was worshipped. In 1 Nephi 11, Nephi considers the meaning of the tree of life as he sees it …

Centenary Of A Giant, Journal Of Book Of Mormon M. Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

It has been 100 years since George Reynolds published his massive work, A Complete Concordance of the Book of Mormon. Reynolds worked on this project, begun while serving a prison sentence for polygamy, over 21 years of his life. He tabulated virtually every word used in the Book of Mormon except a few of the most common words, and gave a portion of the sentence in which each cited word appeared. He himself paid all the printing costs.

Copper, Bronze, And Brass, W. Revell Phillips Jul 2000

Copper, Bronze, And Brass, W. Revell Phillips

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Although Nephi’s tools were most likely made of iron or steel, bronze remains a possibility. The making of brass or bronze requires the creation of a copper alloy, and examples of such alloys are found in both the Old World and the New World. The nature of the alloys differed depending on the minerals available.
