Latino Agenda 2000, Leslie Bowen, Lillian Hirales, Mary Jo Marion, Giovanna Negretti, Andrés Torres Oct 2000

Latino Agenda 2000, Leslie Bowen, Lillian Hirales, Mary Jo Marion, Giovanna Negretti, Andrés Torres

Gastón Institute Publications

Few would argue that our community's position is precarious. On the one hand, we are a growing presence in the Commonwealth. In 1995, there were an estimated 344,068 Latinos living in Massachusetts, representing 5.6% of the total state population, a 20% increase since 1990. It is expected that the 2000 census will confirm that Latinos are indeed the largest minority group in the state. Latinos make up an even larger proportion of the total population of a number of key cities, including Lawrence (48%), Chelsea (39%), Holyoke (37%), Springfield (20%), and Boston (12%). Latino youth have formed the largest minority …

Property Ownership By Married Women In Victorian Ontario, Susan Ingram, Kris Inwood Oct 2000

Property Ownership By Married Women In Victorian Ontario, Susan Ingram, Kris Inwood

Dalhousie Law Journal

This paper reports patterns of property holding by women and men in late nineteenth-century Ontario. We focus on the town of Guelph immediately before and after legislation in 1872 and 1884 which permitted married women to hold property in their own name. The female-held share of all property and the female share of all owners in the town increased sharply. The gains were made by married women, and even more strongly by single women and widows. However, there was little or no shift of property in nearby rural townships. We argue that an induced change in inheritance practice amplified the …

Three Inches Of Night, Rebecca Eldridge Hurst Oct 2000

Three Inches Of Night, Rebecca Eldridge Hurst

English Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine through the medium of short story moments of the unsaid, and how those moments keep us from true, pure communication with ourselves and with one another. Moments of the unsaid are those that make up the hours that make up the days of our lives„ those in which experience cannot be conveyed through language, those, in fact, in which using language to convey experience lessens such. And it is in these moments of the unsaid—where language (written, spoken, or thought) cannot capture truths, cannot link body to body, heart to heart, soul …

False Starts, Evelyn Jill Coley Oct 2000

False Starts, Evelyn Jill Coley

English Theses & Dissertations

False Starts depicts a variety of characters—a single mother, a dishwasher, a philosophy student—who discover the mendacious nature of their world views and concepts of self. The worlds they inhabit are not as sensible as they supposed. Some quietly acquiesce to the chaos, like the single mother in "Still Tank," who gently continues in her role despite the death of her pet jellyfish. Some fight this revelation like Lea in "Another Love Story." Lea assaults her ex-boyfriend, a dishwasher who broke up with her for no fathomable reason. In "Fly Trap," the anchor of False Starts, Allison, a college …

False Cape, Katherine Jackson Oct 2000

False Cape, Katherine Jackson

English Theses & Dissertations

Set at False Cape on the coast of Virginia in the year 1912, this story is about a shipwreck, but it is also a story about choices--between love and honor and betrayal--that face a woman and two men who serve in the U.S. Life-saving Service: Rachel Grey, a widow from Princess Anne County who marries and moves to the desolate beach at False Cape; Robert Grey, keeper of the False Cape Station; and Michael Midgett, a surfman under Grey's command. When the three-masted Italian schooner Francesca da Rimini fetches up on the shoals of False Cape, the relationships of the …

Telling Stories About Cases And Clients: The Ethics Of Narrative, Binny Miller Oct 2000

Telling Stories About Cases And Clients: The Ethics Of Narrative, Binny Miller

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In recent years, narrative has achieved great prominence in legal scholarship and in much other academic work, although the concept is not new. The legal realists always have emphasized the importance of stories; as long ago as 1941, Karl Llewellyn published case studies of the Cheyenne and their dispute settlement practices. In step with the popularity of narrative in legal scholarship, stories about the individuals behind the legal doctrine are increasingly common. While the terms "narrative" and "story" are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not quite the same thing.

Review Of The Politics Of Hallowed Ground: Wounded Knee And The Struggle For Indian Sovereignty By Mario Gonzalez And Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Rolland Dewing Oct 2000

Review Of The Politics Of Hallowed Ground: Wounded Knee And The Struggle For Indian Sovereignty By Mario Gonzalez And Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Rolland Dewing

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This is an insider's account of the attempt of the Oglala and Minneconjou tribes to establish the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre as a national American monument. The preface states, "This book is neither historiography, biography nor autobiography. It is what might be called a mixed genre, informal anecdotal writing of social and political history." The authors suggest this format is an attempt to present history in a more conversational and anecdotal way, allowing the story to be told against a background of federal laws and historical events that will give the reader a better understanding of Sioux …

Review Of Landscapes Of The New West: Gender And Geography In Contemporary Women's Writing By Krista Comer, Brigitte Georgi-Findlay Oct 2000

Review Of Landscapes Of The New West: Gender And Geography In Contemporary Women's Writing By Krista Comer, Brigitte Georgi-Findlay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Claiming the New Western History as its most enabling context, Comer's study traces the genealogy of recent female regionalist writing, locating its roots in the civil rights movement, feminism, and postmodernism. This is an obvious challenge to those who claim Western regionalism as the very antidote to postmodernism. Moreover, by including writers of color in her discussion, Comer questions the idea that Western regionalism is only a "white thing."

Through issues of gender, landscape, and geography, Comer focuses in each of her chapters on a different kind of landscape-urban, wild, erotic, national. The Great Plains do not seem to fit …

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell Oct 2000

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Diversity is the hallmark of freethought in Kansas, for freethinkers were never a homogeneous body. The movement was not only religious, or for that matter, anti-religious, although the majority of social and political issues that it addressed had religious grounding. No one specific organized group dominated historical Kansas freethinking. Instead, individuals in the form of editors of various newspapers, journals, and book series became the landmarks by which the course of the movement's history may be most easily traced. Although the attitudes of freethinkers toward religion are the primary concern of this essay, it must be remembered that freethinkers had …

Review Of Women And Nature: Saving The "Wild" West By Glenda Riley, Diane Glancy Oct 2000

Review Of Women And Nature: Saving The "Wild" West By Glenda Riley, Diane Glancy

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Women and Nature begins with the statement that generations of women have revered nature and explored their relationships with it. Why have they been overlooked? The book is not so much the story of nature and the women in it, but a listing of particular women and their efforts in writing, drawing, and promoting environmental awareness, preservation, and activism.

Many have been aware of the strong ties among women, animals, and nature. As one pamphlet states: "Nature is no mere mechanism, inanimate and insensible. But nature is more like women, whose real law is sympathy." Thus, the book sets out …

Wrong Turn In Cyberspace: Using Icann To Route Around The Apa And The Constitution, A. Michael Froomkin Oct 2000

Wrong Turn In Cyberspace: Using Icann To Route Around The Apa And The Constitution, A. Michael Froomkin

Duke Law Journal

The Internet relies on an underlying centralized hierarchy built into the domain name system (DNS) to control the routing for the vast majority of Internet traffic. At its heart is a single data file, known as the "root." Control of the root provides singular power in cyberspace. This Article first describes how the United States government found itself in control of the root. It then describes how, in an attempt to meet concerns that the United States could so dominate an Internet chokepoint, the U. S. Department of Commerce (DoC) summoned into being the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and …

Varying The Abundance Of O Antigen In Rhizobium Etli And Its Effect On Symbiosis With Phaseolus Vulgaris, K. Dale Noel, Lennart Scott Forsberg, Russell W. Carlson Oct 2000

Varying The Abundance Of O Antigen In Rhizobium Etli And Its Effect On Symbiosis With Phaseolus Vulgaris, K. Dale Noel, Lennart Scott Forsberg, Russell W. Carlson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Judged by migration of its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in gel electrophoresis, the O antigen of Rhizobium etli mutant strain CE166 was apparently of normal size. However, its LPS sugar composition and staining of the LPS bands after electrophoresis indicated that the proportion of its LPS molecules that possessed O antigen was only 40% of the wild-type value. Its LPS also differed from the wild type by lacking quinovosamine (2-amino-2,6-dideoxyglucose). Both of these defects were due to a single genetic locus carrying a Tn5 insertion. The deficiency in O-antigen amount, but not the absence of quinovosamine, was suppressed by transferring into …

Constructing The Criollo Archive: Subjects Of Knowledge In The Bibliotheca Mexicana And The Rusticatio Mexicana, Antony Higgins Oct 2000

Constructing The Criollo Archive: Subjects Of Knowledge In The Bibliotheca Mexicana And The Rusticatio Mexicana, Antony Higgins

Purdue University Press Books

This book constitutes an attempt to theorize the process of the emergence, in eighteenth-century New Spain, of a position of intellectual subjectivity differentiated from that established by the regime of Spanish imperial authority. The principal concern has been to trace how certain groups of Criollo intellectuals try to construct such discourses, paradoxically, out of the framework of available European systems of knowledge and representation. In this fashion, it was sought to discern the outline of an ideological program for Criollo political and cultural hegemony in the eighteenth-century.

Statcom Control For Power System Voltage Control Applications, Pranesh Rao, Zhiping Yang, Mariesa Crow Oct 2000

Statcom Control For Power System Voltage Control Applications, Pranesh Rao, Zhiping Yang, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A static compensator (STATCOM) is a device that can provide reactive support to a bus. It consists of voltage sourced converters connected to an energy storage device on one side and to the power system on the other. In this paper the conventional method of PI control is compared and contrasted with various feedback control strategies. A linear optimal control based on LQR control is shown to be superior in terms of response profile and control effort required. These methodologies are applied to an example power system

Laboratories Teaching Concepts In Microcontrollers And Hardware-Software Co-Design, Daryl G. Beetner, Hardy J. Pottinger, Kyle Mitchell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hardware software co-design is becoming increasingly important to the embedded systems industry. It will soon be fundamental to digital systems design. As such, students in electrical and computer engineering and in computer science should be introduced to hardware-software co-design early in their undergraduate education.

We are designing laboratory modules which introduce concepts of hardware-software co-design in an undergraduate's first course on microcontrollers and digital systems design. Students use design automation tools to develop FPGA-based hardware for use with an 8051-microcontroller and use common software development tools to develop microcontroller software in C or assembly language. Co-simulation of hardware and software …

Dc Power Bus Design With Fdtd Modeling Including A Dispersive Media, Xiaoning Ye, Jun Fan, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak Oct 2000

Dc Power Bus Design With Fdtd Modeling Including A Dispersive Media, Xiaoning Ye, Jun Fan, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

DC power-bus modeling in high-speed digital design using the FDTD method is reported here. The dispersive medium is approximated by a Debye model to account for the loss. A wide band frequency response (100 MHz-5 GHz) is obtained through a single FDTD simulation. Favorable agreement is achieved between the modeled and measured results for a typical DC power-bus structure with multiple SMT decoupling capacitors mounted on the board. The FDTD tool is then applied to investigate the effects of local decoupling on a DC power-bus. The modeled results agree with the results from another modeling tool, the CEMPIE (a circuit …

Why Urban Parents Resist Involvement In Their Children’S Elementary Education, Peter Mcdermott, Julia J. Rothenburg Oct 2000

Why Urban Parents Resist Involvement In Their Children’S Elementary Education, Peter Mcdermott, Julia J. Rothenburg

The Qualitative Report

We examined the perceptions of teachers and parents about family involvement in urban schools. The study generated from several others that we have been conducting about teaching in high poverty, urban schools. Using focus groups, our purpose was to learn how we could better prepare teachers for urban schools. The data revealed that teachers are frustrated with a lack of parental involvement in literacy activities at home and at school. Parents, however, expressed distrust toward the local elementary school because they felt the faculty has been biased against African American and Latino children and their families. Consequently, the parents said …

Dc Power Bus Modeling Using A Circuit Extraction Approach Based On A Mixed-Potential Integral Equation Formulation And An Iterative Equation Solver, Jun Fan, James L. Drewniak, James L. Knighten Oct 2000

Dc Power Bus Modeling Using A Circuit Extraction Approach Based On A Mixed-Potential Integral Equation Formulation And An Iterative Equation Solver, Jun Fan, James L. Drewniak, James L. Knighten

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A quick and simple approach is developed to perform circuit simulations for an equivalent circuit extracted from a first principles formulation for DC power bus structures. The simulations are done by solving the system equation using an iterative method. Good agreement between modeling and measurements demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, which is very suitable and computationally efficient for frequency-domain DC power modeling.

Building For The Future: Worldview Foundations Of Sand And Rock, Michael Goheen

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The good news of Jesus Christ is a message about the revelation and accomplishment of the goal of history-the restoration of the entire creation from sin. Thus, the Christian faith is not a religion that can be slotted into the private domain of human life. Rather it is a comprehensive worldview embodied by the Christian community. The Christian community has always had to embody the gospel of the kingdom in the context of a culture that holds other comprehensive beliefs. Three cultural contexts can be discerned in church history, all of which bring possibilities for and dangers to a faithful …
