Cleaning Up The Junkyard: An Exploration In Developing An Online Course, Wendi Milam Oct 2000

Cleaning Up The Junkyard: An Exploration In Developing An Online Course, Wendi Milam

Theses and Dissertations

As America enters the 21st century, our systems of education must adapt to the changes in culture and technology. Our visions of the modern classroom are no longer limited to a room on a campus with a professor and a blackboard Many classes are going fully online, some are meeting only once a semester if at all. This type of learning and teaching opens the door for many complex questions: What is the most effective style of web site to use? How should the instructor form the requirements of the class? What should the instructor use for academic evaluation …

“The History Of Us”: Social Science, History, And The Relations Of Family In Canada, Cynthia Comacchio Oct 2000

“The History Of Us”: Social Science, History, And The Relations Of Family In Canada, Cynthia Comacchio

History Faculty Publications

This essay provides a selective overview of the Canadian historiography on family. The roots of family history not only extend backwards much further than the “new social history,” bom of the tumultuous 1960s, they are buried deep in several other disciplines, most notably sociology, anthropology, and demography, whose practitioners were concerned as much with the historical process of family change as with the state of families contemporary to their times. I consider how pioneering social scientists, by grappling with the family's relationship to structural change, historicized early 20th century family studies and offered up many of the questions, concepts, theories, …

The Use Of Legislative History In A System Of Separated Powers, Jonathan R. Siegel Oct 2000

The Use Of Legislative History In A System Of Separated Powers, Jonathan R. Siegel

Vanderbilt Law Review

Legislative history is the ultimate bugaboo of the textualists-those judges and scholars who assert that in statutory interpretation, "[w]e do not inquire what the legislature meant; we ask only what the statute means." The textualists have unleashed argument after argument against legislative history. Textualists assert that judicial use of legislative history seeks a collective legislative intent that does not exist and that would not be law if it did exist. They claim that congressional committees deliberately manipulate legislative history in order to influence statutory interpretation. They argue that legislative history is more ambiguous than the statutes it supposedly clarifies, that …

Lower Columbia College Enrollment Forecast, 2000 – 2010, Barry Edmonston, Risa Proehl

Publications, Reports and Presentations

This report provides a student enrollment forecast, including background demographic information and analysis, for Lower Columbia College (LCC). The report considers several factors that are likely to affect the College’s enrollment between 2000 and 2010, including and the geographical areas within and surrounding the service district (Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties, the cities of Longview, Kelso, Woodland and others in the vicinity). Three scenarios rely on different rates of housing and population growth, and two depend on changes of enrollment participation in the …

Immigration: An Overview Of Information Resources, Bert Chapman Oct 2000

Immigration: An Overview Of Information Resources, Bert Chapman

Libraries Research Publications

Immigration has been a subject of intense historical and contemporary debate in US political life. Proponents of immigration cite the important contributions immigrants have made and continue to make to the USA’s national development and evolution. Advocates of more restrictive immigration policies stress concerns over the USA’s ability to support immigrant residents and whether newer immigrants threaten the US national identity and social cohesion. Proponents and opponents of current US immigration policy will use figures from the 2000 census to justify their respective arguments in upcoming debates on this subject. This article examines a variety of immigration literature resources such …

Women's Work And Economic Development, Kristin Mammen, Christina Paxson Oct 2000

Women's Work And Economic Development, Kristin Mammen, Christina Paxson

Publications and Research

Using a cross-country dataset and microdata from India and Thailand, we examine how women's work status changes with economic development. Several clear patterns emerge: women's labor force participation first declines and then rises with development; women move from work in family enterprises to work as paid employees; fertility declines; and gender gaps in education narrow. Women's education levels, and those of their spouses, appear to be important determinants of women's labor market activities. Broad welfare indicators, such as mortality rates and education levels, indicate that women's well-being improves on average with development, both in absolute terms and relative to men.
