The Picture Changes Stylistic Variation In Sitting Bull's Biographies, Barbara Risch Oct 2000

The Picture Changes Stylistic Variation In Sitting Bull's Biographies, Barbara Risch

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Until the 1800s Indian warriors of the Plains recorded significant heroic events from their adventures and pursuits in pictographs, on hide. Then, during the nineteenth century, these pictographs began to be produced on paper as well. About the same time that paper was coming into use, canvas and muslin became available, and the drawings that had formerly been composed on hide began to appear on these new materials. Typically, Indian men made use of discarded or captured ledgers, memorandum books, or rosters to render their exploit narratives; the representation of such events on these materials is referred to as ledger …

A Biochemist In Honors, Dail Mullins

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In 1984-quite unlike the depressed protagonist of George Orwell's novel-I found myself happily ensconced as a senior research associate in the department of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). I had received my Ph.D. in biochemistry from the same institution nine years earlier; had left for two years to do a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of cancer biology at Georgetown University and the National Institutes of Health; but had returned to U AB at the invitation of my doctoral mentor, Jim Lacey, to work on a project grant he had been awarded from …

A Humanist In Honors: Another Look At Catherine Cater, Paul Homan

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In 2000 Catherine Cater marks her 55th year of teaching, a career which began in 1945 upon completion of her Ph.D. in English at the University of Michigan. Since 1962 she has taught at North Dakota State University, and although she officially retired from the faculty in 1982, she has continued to teach philosophy, direct humanities tutorials, and advise students on a volunteer basis. When the faculty at NDSU recognized her with the university's most prestigious teaching award, they made note of her role as the embodiment of the teacher-scholar "who has kept alive the tradition of liberal studies at …

An Nsf -Funded Opportunity For Pre-Service Science Teachers, Lillian Mayberry, Jack Bristol

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

During the fall semester of 1995, a unique partnership opportunity was presented to the Colleges of Science and Education at the University of Texas at EI Paso (UTEP). A National Science Foundation Request for Proposals was received from the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE). It required Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Education to form collaboratives involving the improvement in the preparation of K -12 science and mathematics teachers: A Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (CETP). Although unknown at the time, this would result in Honors education opportunities for students seeking teacher certification.

Review Of Landscapes Of The New West: Gender And Geography In Contemporary Women's Writing By Krista Comer, Brigitte Georgi-Findlay Oct 2000

Review Of Landscapes Of The New West: Gender And Geography In Contemporary Women's Writing By Krista Comer, Brigitte Georgi-Findlay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Claiming the New Western History as its most enabling context, Comer's study traces the genealogy of recent female regionalist writing, locating its roots in the civil rights movement, feminism, and postmodernism. This is an obvious challenge to those who claim Western regionalism as the very antidote to postmodernism. Moreover, by including writers of color in her discussion, Comer questions the idea that Western regionalism is only a "white thing."

Through issues of gender, landscape, and geography, Comer focuses in each of her chapters on a different kind of landscape-urban, wild, erotic, national. The Great Plains do not seem to fit …

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell Oct 2000

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Diversity is the hallmark of freethought in Kansas, for freethinkers were never a homogeneous body. The movement was not only religious, or for that matter, anti-religious, although the majority of social and political issues that it addressed had religious grounding. No one specific organized group dominated historical Kansas freethinking. Instead, individuals in the form of editors of various newspapers, journals, and book series became the landmarks by which the course of the movement's history may be most easily traced. Although the attitudes of freethinkers toward religion are the primary concern of this essay, it must be remembered that freethinkers had …

Review Of The Politics Of Hallowed Ground: Wounded Knee And The Struggle For Indian Sovereignty By Mario Gonzalez And Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Rolland Dewing Oct 2000

Review Of The Politics Of Hallowed Ground: Wounded Knee And The Struggle For Indian Sovereignty By Mario Gonzalez And Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Rolland Dewing

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This is an insider's account of the attempt of the Oglala and Minneconjou tribes to establish the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre as a national American monument. The preface states, "This book is neither historiography, biography nor autobiography. It is what might be called a mixed genre, informal anecdotal writing of social and political history." The authors suggest this format is an attempt to present history in a more conversational and anecdotal way, allowing the story to be told against a background of federal laws and historical events that will give the reader a better understanding of Sioux …

Review Of Celluloid Indians: Native Americans And Film By Jacquelyn Kilpatrick, Michael Hilger Oct 2000

Review Of Celluloid Indians: Native Americans And Film By Jacquelyn Kilpatrick, Michael Hilger

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

So far as I know, Jacquelyn Kilpatrick is the first person of American Indian heritage to write a book about the portrayal of Indians in film. Her special commitment to the American Indian community manifests itself in her careful analysis of American Indian historical issues in the chapters on film history and in her attention to parallel images in literature, especially literature by Native Americans. Complementing her unique perspective is a strong knowledge of contemporary film theory and criticism, which enables her to read selected films in ways that diverge from readings found in previous books on this topic.

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan Oct 2000

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In this paper we provide human service professionals with a foundation for understanding the cultural and programmatic issues necessary for effectively addressing the needs of Latinos within a context of demographic transition and decreases in public support for educational attainment, physical and mental health, and occupational success. A long tradition of deficit thinking has shaped many of the current models employed when addressing the needs of Latinos. The authors suggest "community/culturally centered" or "strengths-based" approaches, such as community based organizations (CBOs), as promising alternatives to current practices. Coalitions among CBOs can be the most effective method in creating and sustaining …

Introduction: Latinos On The Great Plains: An Overview, Refugio Rochin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

I am pleased to join co-editors Gus Carlo and Miguel Carranza in this special issue of Great Plains Research, focusing on the "Latino Experience on the Great Plains." As an invited contributor to this issue, I have decided to write from my personal knowledge and experiences as the former director of the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University from July 1994 through July 1998. It was during this time that I worked closely with a number of midwestern scholars to promote the most extensive studies and reports on Latinos of the heartland, including the Great Plains. At …

Attitudes Of Selected Latino Oldtimers Toward Newcomers: A Photo Elicitation Study, D. A. Lopez Oct 2000

Attitudes Of Selected Latino Oldtimers Toward Newcomers: A Photo Elicitation Study, D. A. Lopez

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Latino population in the Midwest has been increasing rapidly. Latinos have been in Omaha, Nebraska, since the late 1800s. However, the development of modern meatpacking plants and a low unemployment rate have resulted in a large population of "newcomers" to the city. Latino "oldtimers" differ from newcomers in their experiences. I examine, through photo elicitation, attitudes of a selected population of Latino oldtimers toward newcomers as contextualized through segmented assimilation. Results indicate oldtimers in this sample have some misgivings about newcomers. Furthermore, I argue that downward assimilation of Latino newcomers is likely given the conditions to which they migrate.

Health Care Utilization And The Status Of Latinos In Rural Meat Processing Communities, Joe Blankenau, Joni Boye-Beaman Oct 2000

Health Care Utilization And The Status Of Latinos In Rural Meat Processing Communities, Joe Blankenau, Joni Boye-Beaman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Using interviews conducted in two Nebraska communities, we illustrate health-care challenges for Latinos in meat-processing communities. Two hundred twenty-one Latinos (48% male), primarily of Mexican descent, were interviewed face-to-face by bilingual interviewers. Fifteen percent of the respondents are between the ages of 20 and 24, 75% are between 25 and 44, and 10% are between 45 and 64. Nearly half have lived in the United States for five or fewer years. Aday's (1993) framework for predicting populations at risk is used to identify factors affecting health status and utilization. These factors include measures of human capital, social status, and social …

The Role Of Research And Scholarship In Enhancing The Quality Of Life For Latinos On The Great Plains, Miguel A. Carranza, Gustavo Carlo, Maria Rosario De Guzman Oct 2000

The Role Of Research And Scholarship In Enhancing The Quality Of Life For Latinos On The Great Plains, Miguel A. Carranza, Gustavo Carlo, Maria Rosario De Guzman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The preamble to The Convention on the Rights of the Child, "recalls the basic principles of the United Nations and specific provisions of certain relevant human rights treaties and proclamations; reaffirms the fact that children, because of their vulnerability, need special care and protection; and places special emphasis on the primary caring and protective responsibilities of the family, the need for legal and other protection of the child before and after birth, the importance of respect for the cultural values of the child's community, and the vital role of international cooperation in achieving the realization of children's rights" (UNICEF 2001). …

Natural Rights And The Second Amendment, Steven J. Heyman Oct 2000

Natural Rights And The Second Amendment, Steven J. Heyman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

A growing body of scholarship claims that the Second Amendment was intended to enable individuals to exercise their natural right to self-defense against violence. In this Article, Heyman shows that this view is based on a misunderstanding of the natural rights tradition, as reflected in the works of Locke and Blackstone, the post-Revolutionary state declarations of rights, and the debates over the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Natural rights theory held that, when individuals entered society, they largely gave up their right to use force against others in return for the protection that they received under the law. And …

Lost And Found: Researching The Second Amendment, Robert J. Spitzer Oct 2000

Lost And Found: Researching The Second Amendment, Robert J. Spitzer

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The recent proliferation of writings on the Second Amendment makes numerous claims including: (1) there has been little or no legal scholarship on the Second Amendment until recent times; (2) the "individualist" view of the Second Amendment is the dominant or mainstream paradigm; (3) the courts have committed a "dereliction of duty" insofar as they have been silent on, or indifferent to, interpretation of the Second Amendment; and (4) since three of the four Supreme Court cases concerning the Second Amendment were decided in the nineteenth century, the court doctrine is somehow defective, irrelevant, outdated, unclear, or "embarrassing." In this …

A Jewel In The Gardens Of Paradise: The Art And Architecture Of The Hawai'i Temple, Paul L. Anderson Oct 2000

A Jewel In The Gardens Of Paradise: The Art And Architecture Of The Hawai'i Temple, Paul L. Anderson

BYU Studies

For seventy years, the Hawai'i Temple (now called the La'ie Hawai'i Temple) has stood like a timeless vision of paradise, white and gleaming between emerald mountains and a sapphire sea. Some visitors have seen in its noble form and lush gardens a resemblance to the Taj Mahal or some wonder of the ancient world. However, my own reaction upon approaching the temple for the first time was surprise. My lifelong familiarity with the building had come from handsome and exotic color photographs in Church magazines, and I was amazed to discover how much smaller the temple is than I had …
