The Old American, Ernest Hebert Jan 2000

The Old American, Ernest Hebert

Dartmouth Scholarship

In 1746, Nathan Blake, the first frame house builder in Keene, New Hampshire, was abducted by Algonkians and held in Canada as a slave. Inspired by this dramatic slice of history, novelist Ernest Hebert has written a masterful new novel recreating those years of captivity. Set in New England and Canada during the French and Indian Wars, The Old American is driven by its complex, vividly imagined title character, Caucus-Meteor. By turns shrewd and embittered, ambitious and despairing, inspired and tormented, he is the self-styled "king" of the remnants of the first native tribes that encountered the English. Displaced and …

Biological Science In Conservation, David Johns Jan 2000

Biological Science In Conservation, David Johns

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large-scale wildlands reserve systems offer one of the best hopes for slowing, if not reversing, the loss of biodiversity and wilderness. Establishing such reserves requires both sound biology and effective advocacy. Attempts by The Wildlands Project and its cooperators to meld science and advocacy in the service of conservation is working, but is not without some problems. Scientists and advocates have differences in methods of work, different understandings of the origins and place of values in conservation, and differing expectations about the efficacy of biological information in achieving protection. Despite these differences, successful relationships can be forged where these differences …

Just For Money? : An Exploratory Study Into The Motivations Of Nude Dancers, Elaine Vance Jan 2000

Just For Money? : An Exploratory Study Into The Motivations Of Nude Dancers, Elaine Vance

Dissertations and Theses

Women working as nude dancers have been depicted both in academia and popular literature either as victims of patriarchal exploitation and economic oppression, or as empowered women choosing the most profitable form of work out of the limited options provided for them. This study explores these opposing motivational factors for the entrance and continuance of nude dancing, integrating the theoretical framework of Sex Positive feminism with Strauss and Corbin's (1990) grounded theory approach. Sex Positive feminism asserts that sex work is neither oppressive nor exploitative but rather can be a consensual and legitimate avenue resulting in an increase in women's …

This book was prepared over a period of two years. Most of us have worked together previously as members of an advisory committee for “College Age Youth,” a W.K. Kellogg Foundation initiative to develop leadership abilities in college undergraduates at 31 institutions. That program demostrated that colleges and universities can provide highly effective environments for the development of future leaders (Zimmerman-Oster & Burkhardt, 1999). The idea of writing a book that could address the application of transformative leadership to higher education was first conceived in November 1997. However, work on the book did not begin until the Spring of 1998. …

Chinese Numeratives And The Mass/Count Distinction, David Goodman Jan 2000

Chinese Numeratives And The Mass/Count Distinction, David Goodman

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the mass/count distinction for lexical nouns, and how this is formalized morphosyntactically in language. English is one language in which a grammaticized mass/count distinction can be seen--though there are varying explanations regarding what this distinction actually signifies. Chinese, on the other hand, is a language which might appear to be missing a formalized mass/count distinction. However, I postulate that Mandarin Chinese does in fact have a syntactic-distributional diagnostic available for teasing apart mass nouns from count nouns.

The diagnostic that I propose for finding a mass/count distinction among lexical nouns in Mandarin lies in the distribution of …

Design And Evaluation Of A Specialized Computer Architecture For Manipulating Binary Decision Diagrams, Robert K. Hatt Jan 2000

Design And Evaluation Of A Specialized Computer Architecture For Manipulating Binary Decision Diagrams, Robert K. Hatt

Dissertations and Theses

Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) are an extremely important data structure used in many logic design, synthesis and verification applications. Symbolic problem representations make BDDs a feasible data structure for use on many problems that have discrete representations. Efficient implementations of BOD algorithms on general purpose computers has made manipulating large binary decision diagrams possible. Much research has gone into making BOD algorithms more efficient on general purpose computers. Despite amazing increases in performance and capacity of such computers over the last decade, they may not be the best way to solve large, specialized problems. A computer architecture designed specifically to …

Black Gaius: A Quest For The Multicultural Origins Of The "Western Legal Tradition", P. G. Monateri Jan 2000

Black Gaius: A Quest For The Multicultural Origins Of The "Western Legal Tradition", P. G. Monateri

UC Law Journal

This article is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to reconstructing the historical self-consciousness of the Western Legal Tradition, showing the emergence of a model based on the more or less explicit assumptions of Roman, and subsequently Western, legal originalism and supremacy. In the second part, different areas are investigated--contract, theories of government, dispute settlements, and legal culture-to challenge the same existence of a Roman law at the root of modem Western laws. In this way the package of received ideas in legal scholarship about the history and nature of the Western legal culture is revealed to be …

Republican Mothers, Bastards' Fathers And Good Victims: Discarding Citizens And Equal Protection Through The Failures Of Legal Images, Linda Kelly Jan 2000

Republican Mothers, Bastards' Fathers And Good Victims: Discarding Citizens And Equal Protection Through The Failures Of Legal Images, Linda Kelly

UC Law Journal

In Republican Mothers, Bastards' Fathers and Good Victims: Discarding Citizens and Equal Protection Through the Failures of Legal Images, Professor Linda Kelly uncovers the influence of gender images in immigration law. While in many areas of law gender perceptions have been exposed, in immigration law legal images of gender remain unspoken and unchallenged. In the recent decision of Miller v. Albright, the Supreme Court declared that while a woman becomes a parent immediately upon the birth of her child, a man is not legally considered a parent until he assumes post-birth responsibility for his child. Miller challenged a provision of …

Divining Regulatory Intent: The Place For A "Legislative History" Of Agency Rules, Lars Noah Jan 2000

Divining Regulatory Intent: The Place For A "Legislative History" Of Agency Rules, Lars Noah

UC Law Journal

This Article juxtaposes the recent debates about statutory interpretation and the judicial uses of legislative histories with the relative quiescence over methods for interpreting agency regulations. The latter subject merits more attention than it has received given the relatively greater prevalence and practical import of legislative rules issued by administrative agencies as compared with statutory commands from the legislature. Unlike attempts to understand the legislature's original intent, whether by focusing solely on statutory text or considering extrinsic aids found in various pre-enactment explanatory materials, courts routinely defer to agencies' post-promulgation interpretations of the meaning of their regulations. This grants executive …

Influence Of Public Image Of Nurses On Nursing Practice, Miyuki Takase Jan 2000

Influence Of Public Image Of Nurses On Nursing Practice, Miyuki Takase

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Many researchers believe that nurses live in a dual structure, encompassing both the social and nursing worlds. They contend that these two worlds have contrasting views toward nurses. This is, while nurses are guided to establish professional status, society still expects them to remain in a dependent role. This conflict is assumed to have a negative impact on nurses’ psychological and functional states (Kalisch & Kalisch, 1983 & 1987). However, this assumption has not yet been explored sufficiently. The aim of this descriptive correlational study was therefore to investigate the relationships among the public image of nurses, nurses’ self concept, …

Living With A Transvestite : A Phenomenological Study Of Wives And Committed Partners Of Transvestites, Heather Christine Freegard Jan 2000

Living With A Transvestite : A Phenomenological Study Of Wives And Committed Partners Of Transvestites, Heather Christine Freegard

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Being a man or woman is at the core of human social lives and personal identity, and guides appropriate behaviours such as dress, mannerisms and relationships. Transvestism, or the practice of wearing the clothes of the other gender, challenges societal values and guidelines for behaviour. The attitude of society to this practice has varied from veneration to vilification depending on the period of history and the culture of the people. In western countries, although there is little social or legal repression, transvestism is largely a hidden phenomena. The tradition of comic drag has dominated public recognition of cross-dressing. Hence transvestites …

Target Language Avoidance By Thai Teachers Of English: Thai Teachers' Beliefs, Sasithorn Vacharaskunee Jan 2000

Target Language Avoidance By Thai Teachers Of English: Thai Teachers' Beliefs, Sasithorn Vacharaskunee

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Interactionist theories of second language acquisition (SLA) claim that both comprehensible input and modified interaction in the target language are necessary for language learning. In the foreign language context, little opportunity exists for such input simply through exposure to the target language outside the classroom. Therefore, the quantity as well as quality of input within classrooms is especially important. However in spite of this fact many non-native teachers of second language, including English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers, tend to avoid using the target language in their classrooms. This has serious pedagogic implications. Thai teachers are typical of many …
