A Comparative Study Of Indiana Superintendent's Perceptions Of Principal Evaluation Instruments, Ginger Lee Studebaker Jan 2000

A Comparative Study Of Indiana Superintendent's Perceptions Of Principal Evaluation Instruments, Ginger Lee Studebaker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the difference between formative or summative principal evaluation instruments used by large and small school districts in the state of Indiana, (2) to determine which outcomes are used to for principal evaluations, (3) to compare school districts' use of administrative evaluation instruments based on the skills necessary for effective leaders, and (4) to compare the perceptions of superintendents regarding their principal evaluation instruments. Surveys were sent to 69 Indiana public school superintendents. Thirty-one school districts had a student enrollment over 7000, and thirty-eight districts had a student enrollment of less than …

Sources Of Information For Commercial Farms: Usefulness Of Media And Personal Sources, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge, Linda D. Whipker Jan 2000

Sources Of Information For Commercial Farms: Usefulness Of Media And Personal Sources, Brent A. Gloy, Jay Akridge, Linda D. Whipker

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The usefulness of several information sources is examined for U.S. farms with sales in excess of $100,000. The results indicate that crop/livestock-specific magazines and general farm magazines are the most useful information sources. Analyses indicate that the types and number of different commodities that the farm produced, as well as Internet use, are the most consistent predictors of attitudes toward various information sources. However, characteristics that explain attitudes toward different information sources vary substantially across the information sources considered.

Evaluating A Change To Seminar-Style Teaching, Kirsten Anker, Catherine Dauvergne, Mark Findlay, Jenni Millbank Jan 2000

Evaluating A Change To Seminar-Style Teaching, Kirsten Anker, Catherine Dauvergne, Mark Findlay, Jenni Millbank

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

While the use of small to medium-sized seminar-style groups has long been a feature of some Australian law faculties, such as the University of New South Wales, it is a recent innovation in others, including the University of Western Australia and the University of Adelaide. In March 1996 the Faculty of Law at the University of Sydney made a decision to move from a traditional lecture and tutorial structure to seminar-style classes of limited size. This article discusses the reasons for the move away from a traditional lecture/ tutorial format to an interactive seminar-style model of teaching. The paper explains …

Resource Allocation And Efficiency In Public Sector Audits, Kar M. Chong Jan 2000

Resource Allocation And Efficiency In Public Sector Audits, Kar M. Chong

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In recent years, the push for reform in the Australian public sector audit has placed the Office of the Auditor-General (hereafter OAG) in a more contestable or market- like environment, where the OAG is accountable for an efficient and effective provision of public sector audit. The purpose of this study is to compare the cost efficiency of in-house and contract-out arrangements to deliver financial audits in the public sector. It empirically tests whether there are audit cost and audit fee differences between in-house providers (i.e., the OAG) and contractors (i.e., public accounting firms). The secondary aims of this study are …

Prisoners' Use Of Social Support, Gaynor S. Hobbs Jan 2000

Prisoners' Use Of Social Support, Gaynor S. Hobbs

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Manuscript 1: It is generally acknowledged that prison is often a stressful environment, yet little is known of the coping processes employed by prisoners. This paper aims to examine the question of what facilitates and frustrates prisoners' use of social support whilst imprisoned. This question is examined with regards to both informal (family and friends, other prisoners) and 'formal sources of support (professional support services, peer support prisoners, prison officers). The conclusion that was drawn from this review of the literature is that the role of social support in correctional environments is largely unknown and current thinking is based primarily …

Mechanical Supported Adaptable Wing, Cory Pike Jan 2000

Mechanical Supported Adaptable Wing, Cory Pike

Theses

There are several advantages to the incorporation of an adaptable wing on an aircraft. Among these are increased fuel efficiency, greater maneuverability, and an improved ability to negotiate adverse conditions. This thesis explores the concept of a mechanically supported adaptable wing, where the supports are in the form of virtual spars running lengthwise along a wing of uniform cross-section. With no cross-sectional support to the wing, the skin spanning the area between the virtual spars experiences a certain amount of deflection due to the various aerodynamic forces acting on the wing. This thesis develops a process for optimizing (minimizing) the …

Limited Liability And Creditors' Rights: The Limits Of Risk Shifting To Creditors, Frederick Tung Jan 2000

Limited Liability And Creditors' Rights: The Limits Of Risk Shifting To Creditors, Frederick Tung

Faculty Scholarship

In this Symposium, we were asked to identify and articulate the nature of our passion for teaching corporate law. My passion-a bit odd in this context, perhaps-is bankruptcy. In addition to teaching the basic Corporations course, I also teach Corporate Reorganization and Bankruptcy, and my research has focused primarily on corporate reorganization issues. As I say, my particular passion may seem out of place in the context of this Symposium. The corporation is an engine for maximizing wealth. Yet we bankruptcy types obsess about financial ruin. We pray for the next recession. We sell short. Our chips sit on the …

When Fathers' Rights Are Mothers' Duties: The Failure Of Equal Protection In Miller V. Albright, Kristin Collins Jan 2000

When Fathers' Rights Are Mothers' Duties: The Failure Of Equal Protection In Miller V. Albright, Kristin Collins

Faculty Scholarship

The history of coverture and the transmission of American citizenship brings an elementary point into focus: The allocation of parental rights is always correlated with the allocation of parental responsibility. This basic legal truism, and its numerous implications for citizenship law, suggests that the principal gender injustice caused by § 1409 is not its truncation of fathers' rights, but its creation and perpetuation of a legal regime in which mothers assume full responsibility for foreign-born nonmarital children. Once we recognize this gendered operation of § 1409, broader failures of equal protection analysis come into relief. First, while the jurisprudential understanding …

An Assessment Of On-Line Package Customization For Sheet Size Products Packaged In Paperboard Envelopes, Kevin Kennedy Jan 2000

An Assessment Of On-Line Package Customization For Sheet Size Products Packaged In Paperboard Envelopes, Kevin Kennedy

Theses

This study evaluates the on-line printing of paperboard envelopes as a means of supporting the need to provide customized packaging. Market forces and new business models are contributing to the need for customized packaging and rapid response to orders. Large retailers are demanding unique packaging presentations and global marketing requires localized packaging for different regions of the world. A business environment ofjust-intime delivery and minimal inventory levels demand flexibility to react to unpredictable product mix and volumes. These conditions require customized packaging within short cycle times. The traditional carton printing process using offset lithography does not respond quickly enough to …

Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske Jan 2000

Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske

Theses

This thesis discusses the current controversial issue of traditional classroom vs. distance learning approaches in higher education institutions using a case study in the College of Applied Science and Technology at RIT. The most important question addressed in the thesis is, "Are distance learning methods effective for addressing university-level learning goals?" (Kathleen Davey, 1999, p. 45). There are currently many disputes between educational researchers on this issue. The first four chapters cover details of the proposal stage as previously approved by the Thesis Committee. Chapter One briefly introduces this issue and several important terms used throughout the thesis (e.g., distance …

A Comparative Study Of The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers And Corrugated Board, Based On Different Corrugation Directions, Richard Curatalo Jan 2000

A Comparative Study Of The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers And Corrugated Board, Based On Different Corrugation Directions, Richard Curatalo

Theses

This study evaluates compression damage to corrugated shipping containers used in the small parcel delivery system. A client is experiencing an unacceptable level of end-to-end compression resistance during shipment through small parcel companies, while never experiencing any top-to-bottom compression damage. According to small parcel company workers, there is a need for more end-to-end compression strength in corrugated shipping containers. This study examines the effect of corrugation direction on corrugated shipping containers and corrugated board. Box compression testing (BCT) is performed on regular-slotted containers with different corrugation directions. Edgewise compression testing (ECT) is also used in comparing the compression strengths of …

That Bitter Spring, Erin V. Cunningham Jan 2000

That Bitter Spring, Erin V. Cunningham

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of writing this novel was to see if I could write something longer than fifteen pages. It is a melodrama. It is a romance. It is a gothic horror that I never intended to create, but then one never intends to end up with their own Frankenstein, do they?

The story is set in a small town in North Carolina in the summer of 1941. It is the same as every tired plot; boy meets girl, boy loses girl, but this time girl decides that life is better off without him anyway.

Images and the concept of time …

The Influence Of Cultural Backgrounds On The Interpretations Of Literature Texts Used In The Esl Classroom, Barbara Jostrom Gates Jan 2000

The Influence Of Cultural Backgrounds On The Interpretations Of Literature Texts Used In The Esl Classroom, Barbara Jostrom Gates

Dissertations and Theses

This study was a detailed descriptive investigation into the different interpretations and perceptions that are evoked by readers of United States literature, based on their cultural backgrounds and experience. Grounded in research that advocates for the convergence of culture and literature in the language classroom and a research design based on reader-response theory, this study explored the responses of two groups of students from the University of Portland: international students, the majority of whom were English as a Second Language (ESL), and U.S. citizens, all of whom were native speakers of American English.

Through a reader-response style questionnaire modeled after …

Rules For Research On Human Genetic Variation: Lessons From Iceland, George J. Annas Jan 2000

Rules For Research On Human Genetic Variation: Lessons From Iceland, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

Research on genetic variation aims to understand how genes function and requires the comparison of DNA samples from groups of individuals to identify variations that might have importance for health or disease. This work is easier if the samples are linked to accurate medical records and genealogic information. Iceland has medical records for all its citizens going back to World War I and detailed genealogic information going back even further. Because Iceland's small population (270,000) has long been isolated and homogeneous, it is thought by many to be an ideal place to search for disease-related genes. Journalists have cavalierly labeled …

The Prosecutor's Ethical Duty To Seek Exculpatory Evidence In Police Hands: Lessons From England, Stanley Z. Fisher Jan 2000

The Prosecutor's Ethical Duty To Seek Exculpatory Evidence In Police Hands: Lessons From England, Stanley Z. Fisher

Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court in Kyles v. Whitley affirmed the prosecutor's duty under Brady v. Maryland to disclose exculpatory evidence to the defense, even if the police have not revealed the evidence to the prosecutor. According to the Court, prosecutors are responsible for ensuring that police communicate relevant evidence to her office. How should prosecutors implement that responsibility? Both England and the United States require prosecutors to disclose exculpatory evidence known to the police, but they take radically different approaches to implementing the prosecutor's duty. The English have legislated a comprehensive regulatory framework for police record keeping and revelation of case …

A Reflective Rhetorical Model: The Legal Writing Teacher As Reader And Writer, Linda L. Berger Jan 2000

A Reflective Rhetorical Model: The Legal Writing Teacher As Reader And Writer, Linda L. Berger

Scholarly Works

Like most writing teachers, the legal writing teacher believes that his reading and response to student work is the most important thing he does, an importance that is underscored by the amount of time it takes. Yet, despite its importance and the hours it consumes, the rhetoric of teacher reading and writing remains relatively unexplored. This article proposes that we begin to apply what we have learned about student reading and writing to our own reading and writing. Our process of reading and responding to student work should be as reflective and rhetorical as the reading and writing process that …

Globalization And The U.S. Market In Legal Services: Shifting Identities, Carole Silver Jan 2000

Globalization And The U.S. Market In Legal Services: Shifting Identities, Carole Silver

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The article examines the international activities of various segments of the U.S. legal profession and analyzes the impact of these activities on the domestic market in legal services. It takes an empirical approach to the question of how international activities have shaped the profession by chronicling the foreign office activity of more than 70 of the largest U.S. firms. The data presented facilitates new insight into the ways in which U.S. lawyers participate in the international market in legal services. The article reveals that internationalization has resulted in the homogenization of the largest U.S. firms, as they increasingly compete for …

Disappearing Acts: The State And Violence Against Women In The Twentieth Century, Michelle Fine, Lois Weis Jan 2000

Disappearing Acts: The State And Violence Against Women In The Twentieth Century, Michelle Fine, Lois Weis

Publications and Research

As children we held our breath, our senses filled with the musty smells of elephants, the staccato flashes of twirling plastic flashlights, the terrors of trapeze. With mystery, moustache, and elegance, the magician waved a wand, invited a woman, usually White, seemingly working class, into a box. She disappeared or was cut in half. Applause. Our early introduction to the notion of the sponsored disappearing act. So, too, at the end of the twentieth century, we witness poor and working-class women shoved into spaces too small for human form, no elegance, no wand. And they too disappear. Disappearing from welfare …
