I Saw Another Angel Fly, J. Michael Hunter Jan 2000

I Saw Another Angel Fly, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

This photo essay provides an overview of the history of the Angel Moroni statues, beginning with the angel atop the Nauvoo Temple and continuing through to designs used on the Salt Lake Temple, the Washington D.C. Chapel, the Los Angeles California Temple, the Washington D.C. Temple, and other temples built through 2000. Angel Moroni statues have come to symbolize for Latter-day Saints the restoration of the gospel in the latter days. For Mormons, the Moroni statues herald the gospel being preached “to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people” (Rev. 14:6). “I Saw Another Angel Fly” discusses …

Electronic Records And Signatures Under The Federal E-Sign Legislation And The Ueta, Robert A. Wittie, Jane K. Winn Jan 2000

Electronic Records And Signatures Under The Federal E-Sign Legislation And The Ueta, Robert A. Wittie, Jane K. Winn

Articles

Federal legislation establishing legal parity between electronic records and signatures and their paper and ink counterparts was signed into law June 30, 2000, and became effective, at least for most purposes, on October 1. The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-SIGN or the Act) effectively sweeps away a myriad of anachronistic and inconsistent state and federal requirements for paper and ink documents and signatures. In so doing, E-SIGN eliminates many of the legal uncertainties that have surrounded the use of electronic media in commerce and should enable businesses and consumers alike to more fully realize the cost …

Effects Of The Entomopathogenic Fungus Metarhizium Anisopliae On Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes In Lake Victoria Island, Marco Brese Jan 2000

Effects Of The Entomopathogenic Fungus Metarhizium Anisopliae On Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes In Lake Victoria Island, Marco Brese

All Master’s Theses

Glossina spp. Commonly known as tsetse flies are vectors of trypanosomes which can cause african human and animal trypanosomiases. The control of those diseases and their vector has shown some limitations. The 'dissemination technique' was considered to become a suitable method for tsetse control. It involves the contamination of flies with a lethal or sterilising agent and is based on the spread of the agent through natural contact events between tsetse flies. In the first part of the study, fluorescent pigment powder was used to detect whether there are regular contact events between specimens of g. Fuscipes fuscipes in the …

Respa - Questioning Its Effectiveness, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod Jan 2000

Respa - Questioning Its Effectiveness, Eloisa Rodriguez-Dod

Faculty Publications

Purchasing real estate is a complicated process, especially for the average consumer. The closing procedure alone involves fees and documents that can be confusing to a borrower. The Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) was enacted in 1974 in order to ease some of this confusion.

This article discusses the enactment of RESPA and its purpose, which is mainly to "insure that consumers... are provided with greater and more timely information on the nature and costs of the settlement process and are protected from unnecessarily high settlement charges caused by certain abusive practices." The article also discusses disclosure requirements that …

Who Exactly Is Living La Vida Loca: The Legal And Political Consequences Of Latino-Latina Ethnic And Racial Stereotypes In Film And Other Media, Ediberto Román Jan 2000

Who Exactly Is Living La Vida Loca: The Legal And Political Consequences Of Latino-Latina Ethnic And Racial Stereotypes In Film And Other Media, Ediberto Román

Faculty Publications

This piece, however, will not simply expose the insidious stereotypes of Latinas and Latinos. It will undertake the more involved task of drawing a nexus between the societal prejudice which leads to the stereotyping and the legal and political consequences that result from it. Specifically, I argue that these media images, myths, metaphors, and stereotypes play a critical role in establishing society's vision of Latinas and Latinos. In other words, these stereotypes serve to reinforce both the characterizations of Latinas and Latinos from the perspectives of both the dominant and the dominated. These stereotypes, in turn, foster and perpetuate two …

Banking And Insurance: Before And After The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, Jerry W. Markham, Lissa L. Broome Jan 2000

Banking And Insurance: Before And After The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, Jerry W. Markham, Lissa L. Broome

Faculty Publications

This article traces the growth of insurance in America and describes how its regulatory structure developed separately from the regulatory structure of other financial services. The authors describe how banks became involved in insurance activities as a way to expand their traditional banking services. Although regulatory restrictions at first impeded this effort, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 has now opened the door more widely to the combination of banking and insurance. Nevertheless, banks will continue to face regulatory hurdles and restrictions under GLB that will impair their ability to compete in the insurance business. The article examines the landscape for …

Empirical Insight And Some Thoughts On Future(S) Investigation: Comments On Mark West's 'Private Ordering At The World's First Futures Exchange', A.W. Brian Simpson

Michigan Law Review

Some considerable number of years ago, when I was in Chicago, I had a plan to undertake a general study of the origins of futures markets. They fascinated me for a variety of reasons, one being their bizarre nature: traders meeting together, usually in some form of ring, in order to sell, on a huge scale, quantities of commodities which they neither possess, nor intend to possess, to other traders, who have not the least wish to receive such commodities, and nowhere to put them if they did. At first sight it appears a weird perversion of the institution of …

Interactive Televised Instruction: Factors That Influence Student Evaluations Of Business Courses., Lorraine P. Anderson Jan 2000

Interactive Televised Instruction: Factors That Influence Student Evaluations Of Business Courses., Lorraine P. Anderson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined levels of student satisfaction in business courses offered at Marshall University through an interactive television delivery system to determine whether the delivery method influenced student satisfaction. Based on Clow's (1999) contention that remote-site students might bias their answers to specialized survey instruments that assess student attitudes in ITV classes, standardized student course evaluations completed at the end of the semester at traditional classroom based sites, host ITV sites and remote sites were used to measure student satisfaction. Responses to the instrument were analyzed for 3,282 students who enrolled in business courses during the Fall 1997 semester through …

A Burkean Analysis Of Aung San Suu Kyi's Leadership Role In The Political Development Of Burma, Jayshri H. Patel

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The focus of this thesis is the historical and analytical role, influence and effect of Aung San, U Nu, and Ne Win in the struggle of independent post-war Burma between the philosophy of Buddhism and the aims of a Socialist welfare-state and its effect on Aung San Suu Kyi's struggle for democracy in present day Burma. There has not been any rhetorical analysis of Aung San Suu Kyi as of yet. Chapter 1 covers the political history of Burma in detail; it will cover the monarchy period, the British colonization, and the struggle for independence. Chapter 2 will concentrate on …

Book Clubs And Their Effect On Mother-Daughter Relationships, Kimberly Wise Jan 2000

Book Clubs And Their Effect On Mother-Daughter Relationships, Kimberly Wise

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this research paper was to examine book clubs and how they affect the mother/daughter relationship. Thirteen seventh grade girls and their mothers began participating in the book club. The members were surveyed during the initial organizational meeting as to their conversational habits with one another as well as their perceptions of the quality of their mother/daughter relationship. The members then participated in several book club meetings. During the meetings discussions were held which included topics such as characterization, plot, theme, climate, tone, and voice. Mothers and daughters were asked to reflect upon their own life experiences in …

Writing Portfolios In A Second Grade English As A Second Language Classroom, Adriana Vargas Jan 2000

Writing Portfolios In A Second Grade English As A Second Language Classroom, Adriana Vargas

Graduate Research Papers

Student reflection in collaboration with the teacher is an important element in the describing children's involvement in the writing process and their instructional needs. Such description, or qualitative assessment, is necessary as language is a process. Several qualitative assessment techniques that support each other can further children's self-reflection, or self-evaluation, such as journaling, conferencing, and portfolio construction. These techniques can closely relate instruction and assessment. This article describes the implementation of portfolios in a second grade classroom in which English is a second language. Two students, each with different English language abilities, were selected to focus in this implementation stage.

International Journal of Speleology

The luminescence of calcite speleothems displays an exponential dependence on soil temperature unless there is a dense cover of forest over the cave to dampen it. This relationship is determined primarily by the strength of solar visible and infrared radiation. It is suggested that, as a consequence, the microzonal variations of luminescence often found in speleothems can be used as a proxy index of Solar Insolation. The luminescence solar insolation proxy record of a speleothem from Jewel Cave, South Dakota, USA, was found to display millenial and centennial cycles in the record. It exhibits a rapid increase in solar insolation …

Is It Always Dark In Caves?, Giovanni Badino Jan 2000

Is It Always Dark In Caves?, Giovanni Badino

International Journal of Speleology

Underground natural sources of visible light are considered. The main light producer is Cerenkov radiation emitted in air, water and rock by cosmic ray muons, that depends, in a complex way, on shape of mountain and of caves. In general the illumination increases linearly with the cavity dimensions. Other light sources are from secondary processes generated by radioactive decays in rock from minerals luminescence. The natural light fluxes in caves are in general easy to detect but are not used from underground life.

Improving The Accuracy Of Predicting Effectiveness Factors For Mth Order And Langmuir Rate Equations In Spherical Coordinates, Jianhui Hong, William C. Hecker, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2000

Improving The Accuracy Of Predicting Effectiveness Factors For Mth Order And Langmuir Rate Equations In Spherical Coordinates, Jianhui Hong, William C. Hecker, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Char oxidation is often modeled using an mth order intrinsic reaction rate in conjunction with an effectiveness factor to account for intraparticle diffusion of gas species. This approach involves the use of a general modulus (MT) and using the first-order curve of effectiveness factor vs MT. This method was originally referred to as the general asymptotic solution. It has been suggested that a simple Langmuir rate equation is more suitable for modeling the effects of pressure on char reactivity. Therefore, several methods of developing general moduli for the Langmuir rate expression are shown. The general asymptotic …
