The Relationship Of Biomass Allocation And Nutrient Dynamics In Loblolly And Slash Pine Forests., Christopher Ashley Dicus Jan 2000

The Relationship Of Biomass Allocation And Nutrient Dynamics In Loblolly And Slash Pine Forests., Christopher Ashley Dicus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aboveground biomass allocation and its effect on various aspects of N and P dynamics were investigated in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) stands planted at different spacings. Further, the relationship of nutrient demand and root production was investigated to validate the functional balance hypothesis in forest stands. N mineralization was greater in loblolly pine stands than slash pine, corresponding with greater needle litter N concentration. Both N and P mineralization increased in loblolly pine stands with increasing stand density, the result of greater nutrient input through increased litterfall. There were no species differences in …

Structure And Function Studies Of De Novo Peptides Containing Novel Amino Acids., Ted Joseph Gauthier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A series of amphipathic peptides rich in alpha,alpha-disubstituted amino acids (alphaalphaAA's) was synthesized and studied for antimicrobial activity and helix preferences in various solvent systems. In addition, a constrained lactam dipeptide amino acid was synthesized and incorporated into a peptide to examine beta-sheet dimer formation. Several short, amphipathic, 310- and alpha-helical peptides containing 80% alphaalphaAA's were synthesized using various combinations of 1-aminocyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid, alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, and 4-aminopiperidine-4-carboxylic acid. The peptides showed direct antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. In addition, several of the peptides showed in vivo and in vitro activity against Brucella abortus and Mycobacterium chelonei. Studies …

A Narrative Study Of Selected Introductory College Biology Students' Struggles To Gain An Understanding Of Scale And Measurement., Juliana Guillory Hinton Jan 2000

A Narrative Study Of Selected Introductory College Biology Students' Struggles To Gain An Understanding Of Scale And Measurement., Juliana Guillory Hinton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Case studies, developed with criteria from Yin's Case Study Research: Design and Methods (1994), probed single mental constructs of four introductory college biology students who were recent high school graduates. Data sources included autobiographical essays, interviews, coconstructed concept maps (Wandersee & Abrams, 1993), a videotape questionnaire, and graphics. A multisensory microscopy experiment provided the setting for the construction of shared meanings by the participants. Concept maps were used then to explore the existing cognitive framework of the participants. This research affirmed the value of supporting graphic organizers for understanding science (Good & Berger, 1998; Hyerle, 1996; Trowbridge & Wandersee, 1998). …

A Spatial Inquiry Of Infant Low Birthweight And Cancer Mortality In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Esra Ozdenerol

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Infant low birthweight rate in East Baton Rouge Parish is higher compared to the nation. Cancer is one of the most serious health problems in Louisiana. A few studies have indicated a relationship between the two health outcomes and their environment, but conclusions from these studies have not always been consistent. The spatial and temporal scales of the data and the methods used in these studies contribute to the inconsistent and uncertain results. The spatial patterns of infant low birthweight and cancer mortality in East Baton Rouge Parish from 1993 to 1996 and their relationships with environmental factors at three …

Study Of The Energy Spectrum Of Solar Neutrinos Above 5.5 Mev., Erik Karl Blaufuss Jan 2000

Study Of The Energy Spectrum Of Solar Neutrinos Above 5.5 Mev., Erik Karl Blaufuss

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Data collected at the Super-Kamiokande detector have been used to make observations of the flux and spectrum of neutrinos that originate in the fusion reactions inside the center of the Sun. Previous observations of solar neutrinos have resulted in fluxes that are one third to one half the values predicted by solar models, a situation that has been labeled "the solar neutrino problem". The phenomena of neutrino oscillations is investigated as a possible solution to this problem. The Super-Kamiokande detector, located in Gifu, Japan, is a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector that detects the scattered electrons from neutrino-electron elastic scattering in the …

Understanding The Biological Concept "Bird": A Kindergarten Case Study., Dilek Buchholz Jan 2000

Understanding The Biological Concept "Bird": A Kindergarten Case Study., Dilek Buchholz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study of 14 students in a metropolitan public school in the Deep South was to find out, during a period of three months, what these kindergarten-aged children knew about birds, whether this knowledge represented current scientific thought, if such science instruction meaningfully affected their prior knowledge, and if so, what the factors during instruction that seemed to influence their understanding of the concept of bird were. The research was conducted in three phases; preinstruction interviews, instruction, and postinstruction interviews. The theoretical framework for this research was based on the Human Constructivism theory of …

Efficient Checkpointing For Heterogeneous Collaborative Environments: Representation, Coordination, And Automation., Kasidit Chanchio Jan 2000

Efficient Checkpointing For Heterogeneous Collaborative Environments: Representation, Coordination, And Automation., Kasidit Chanchio

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Checkpointing can be used to adapt resource utilization in heterogeneous distributed environments. In checkpointing, the state of a process is captured and later restored on a computer to restart execution from the point where the state capturing had occurred. Such capability can be applied to process migration for which resource utilization is adapted toward high-performance by moving a running process from one computer to another. For a heterogeneous environment, problems in checkpointing can be categorized into three domains regarding mechanisms to capture and restore the execution state, memory state, and communication state of a process. Although a few solutions have …

A Case Study In Amazonian Biogeography: Vocal And Dna -Sequence Variation In Hemitriccus Flycatchers., Mario Cohn-Haft

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Ongoing debate about the evolutionary history of the Amazonian avifauna suffers from a shortage of data. Especially needed are thorough geographic sampling, sensitive markers of genetic diversity, and historical data in the form of explicit phylogenies. I examined patterns of geographic variation in three widespread species complexes of nearly identical Amazonian flycatchers in the genus Hemitriccus, based on spectrographic analysis of vocalizations and phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences (1026 base pairs of cytochrome b from 44 individuals) from throughout Amazonia. Although members of the three complexes are extremely difficult to distinguish morphologically and have long been confused by taxonomists, they …

Molecular Systematics And Historical Biogeography Of The Tree Shrews (Tupaiidae)., Kwai Hin Han Jan 2000

Molecular Systematics And Historical Biogeography Of The Tree Shrews (Tupaiidae)., Kwai Hin Han

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examined the molecular systematics and historical biogeography of tree shrews (Tupaiidae). Comparison of cytochrome b sequences and DNA hybridization data suggests that cytochrome b sequences evolved 7.9 to 13.4 times faster than single-copy nuclear DNA. These two data sets are taxonomically congruent. They indicate that the Mindanao tupaiid Urogale everetti is a member of Tupaia, and that there is lineage-based variation in rates of evolution among the tupaiids. A new species of Tupaia from Sarawak (Malaysia), T. stuebingi, was described using morphological, ecological, and cytochrome b sequence data. This lowland species is generally similar in size to the …

Workplace Whining: Antecedents And Process Of Noninstrumental Complaining., Anita Konieczka Heck Jan 2000

Workplace Whining: Antecedents And Process Of Noninstrumental Complaining., Anita Konieczka Heck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a conceptual scheme that advances understanding of workplace whining. It reports an investigation into eight theoretically relevant antecedents to workplace whining, classified into four categories (i.e., dispositional, attitudinal, relational, behavioral). Additionally, it explores the role of organization-based self-esteem in mediating the link between each antecedent and workplace whining. Kowalski's (1996) theory of complaining and self-esteem theory (Coopersmith, 1967, Epstein, 1973; Jones, 1973; Leary & Downs, 1995, Mruk, 1995; Pierce et al., 1989) provided the primary theoretical underpinnings for a series of hypothesized relationships. Data on 471 schoolteachers and their immediate supervisors from …

A Methodology To Support The Maintenance Of Object -Oriented Systems Using Impact Analysis., Michael Alan Hoffman Jan 2000

A Methodology To Support The Maintenance Of Object -Oriented Systems Using Impact Analysis., Michael Alan Hoffman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Object-Oriented (OO) systems are difficult to understand due to the complex nature of the relationships that object-orientation supports. Inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, information hiding, aggregation, and association combine to make maintenance of OO systems difficult. Due to the presence of these characteristics in OO systems, maintenance activities on OO systems often have unexpected or unseen effects on the system. These effects can ripple through system components, complicating maintenance and testing of the system. The ability to trace the effects of maintenance provides the maintainer with knowledge that assists in debugging and testing modified and affected components. In this research, we show …

Floral Ontogeny And Phylogeny In Malvaceae., Teresa Shuff Crozier Jan 2000

Floral Ontogeny And Phylogeny In Malvaceae., Teresa Shuff Crozier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Floral ontogeny in representatives of Malvaceae was compared using scanning electron microscopy. Many aspects of floral development have been resolved by this research, including the presence of a petal-stamen ring meristem in malvaceous taxa. There are several ontogenetic pathways to the formation of this ring meristem; in addition, common petal-stamen mounds are usually present during some stage of development. Stamen proliferation is achieved by partitioning of the ring meristem and furcation of common stamen primordia. Time of initiation overlaps between the corolla and the androecium, and between the androecium and the gynoecium. Helical initiation occurs in the outer organ whorl …

The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston Jan 2000

The Effect Of Phytase On Nutrient Availability In Diets For Swine And Poultry., Sara Leann Johnston

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effect of increasing phytase coefficient of variation (CV) in chick diets, and to determine the effect of phytase addition on nutrient availability in diets for swine and poultry. The first experiment (EXP) simulated varying mix uniformity of phytase by alternately providing two diets with two different concentrations of microbial phytase (FTU). Increasing phytase CV had little effect on growth performance, whereas bone ash and breaking strength and Ca and P retention and excretion decreased only at the most extreme CV. These data suggest that a phytase CV of between 34 and …

Hydrodynamics, Bottom Boundary Layer Processes And Sediment Transport On The South-Central Louisiana Inner Shelf: The Influence Of Extratropical Storms And Bathymetric Modification., David Alton Pepper Jan 2000

Hydrodynamics, Bottom Boundary Layer Processes And Sediment Transport On The South-Central Louisiana Inner Shelf: The Influence Of Extratropical Storms And Bathymetric Modification., David Alton Pepper

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The south-central Louisiana inner shelf has several distinctive characteristics that are not well accounted for by common hydrodynamic and sediment transport models, including a high-frequency wave regime, low fair-weather hydrodynamic energy levels, a coastal orientation parallel to most storm approaches, and a prominent submerged sand body (Ship Shoal). To address these unique considerations, inner-shelf processes were studied using three instrumentation systems deployed on the seaward and landward sides of the shoal between November, 1998 and January, 1999. These instruments were designed to measure hydrodynamic characteristics, suspended sediment concentration, and bed level, which were used to calculate bottom boundary layer parameters …

Two experiments were designed for this purpose: one to study the effect of supplementation on weight gain and body composition, and a second to determine the effect of coating on absorption efficiency and utilization of crystalline methionine. Five isonitrogenous (26% …

Evaluating Alternative Instructional Strategies To Improve Sixth Graders' Reading Comprehension., Emma Mccall Schorzman Jan 2000

Evaluating Alternative Instructional Strategies To Improve Sixth Graders' Reading Comprehension., Emma Mccall Schorzman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although little empirical evidence supporting various instructional strategies for teaching reading comprehension exists, many educators utilize particular strategies assuming their effectiveness. Because difficulties with comprehension are intensified as students reach the intermediate grades, it is necessary that middle school educators instruct using strategies empirically supported through research. This mixed-method study examined the effectiveness of the Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (Stauffer, 1969), the PreP technique (Langer, 1981), and graphic organizers (Barron, 1969), three popular strategies among middle school teachers. Six teachers participated in the two-group design, pretest/posttest study; over a seven-week period, three of the teachers instructed their sixth-grade students using lessons …

Structure Determination Of Derivatized Disaccharides By Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Molecular Modeling., Sanford Louis Mendonca

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research entails the synthesis of derivatized disaccharides, mass spectrometry studies for structural elucidation of the synthetic disaccharides and molecular modeling of the native and derivatized disaccharides. Peralkylated (methyl to pentyl), peresterifed and tert-butyl-dimethyl silylated linkage isomeric glucose-glucose disaccharides were synthesized to eventually be used in mass spectrometry studies. In this dissertation, mass spectrometry was used to examine anomeric pair discrimination of two sets of peralkylated (methyl to pentyl) disaccharides (maltose/cellobiose and isomaltose/gentiobiose). This was carried out by electrospray ionization and collision experiments on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. In addition, effects of alkyl substitution on cleavage of the glycosidic …

Structure, Expression And Promoter Activity Of Ubiquitin Genes From Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Jianlin Wang Jan 2000

Structure, Expression And Promoter Activity Of Ubiquitin Genes From Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Jianlin Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Successful transgenic plant production is largely dependent on the use of suitable promoters. In this study, we described isolation of rice ubiquitin genes, and demonstrated the potential utility of the rice ubiquitin promoters in plant transformation systems. Two polyubiquitin genes (RUBQ1 and RUBQ2) and two ubiquitin extension/fusion genes (RUBQ3 and RUBQ4) have been isolated from a rice genomic BAC library. DNA sequence data revealed that both RUBQ1 and RUBQ2 contained an open reading frame encoding a hexameric precursor ubiquitin and an intron immediate upstream of the initiation codon. The two ubiquitin fusion/extension genes RUBQ3 and RUBQ4 contained one repeat of …

Locally Owned And Operated: Opposition To Chain Stores, 1925--1940., Cory Lewis Sparks Jan 2000

Locally Owned And Operated: Opposition To Chain Stores, 1925--1940., Cory Lewis Sparks

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the 1920s, chain stores exploded in numbers throughout the country. Chains claimed to provide mass distribution for a mass production age. According to their executives, traditional retailing raised the cost of living and interfered with prosperity. Small retailers countered these claims by arguing that corporate retailing endangered prosperity because it concentrated ownership in the hands of a few and stripped wealth from the local community. In 1929 and 1930, anti-chain radio broadcasts sparked popular interest in the chains. Critics accused the chains of using their financial might to sell products below cost and drive competitors out of business. They …

Efficient Iterative Synthesis Of Oligophenylene Rods And Methodology Studies Involving Aryldiazonium Tetrafluoroborate Salts And Arylboronic Esters., Douglas Macarthur Willis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Suzuki coupling protocols were applied towards the design and subsequent iterative synthesis of oligophenylene rods bearing polar functional groups. These well-defined, polar-functionalized rigid rods were ultimately constructed using an efficient iterative molecular doubling approach without using protecting groups, boronic acid isolations, Grignard or organolithium reactions or preparative chromatographic methods. Currently, these rods are being appended to resorcinarene macrocyclic scaffolds in efforts towards achieving a controlled synthesis of novel, uniform, three-dimensional, electronic directional materials with extended, highly functional lower aromatic cavities. Unique methodology studies involving aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborate salts and arylboronic esters were also contrived and investigated. A novel procedure for the …

An Information Theoretic Approach To Content Based Image Retrieval., John Morris Zachary Jr Jan 2000

An Information Theoretic Approach To Content Based Image Retrieval., John Morris Zachary Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We propose an information theoretic approach to the representation and comparison of color features in digital images to handle various problems in the area of content-based image retrieval. The interpretation of color histograms as joint probability density functions enables the use of a wide range of concepts from information theory to be considered in the extraction of color features from images and the computation of similarity between pairs of images. The entropy of an image is a measure of the randomness of the color distribution in an image. Rather than replacing color histograms as an image representation, we demonstrate that …

A Study Of The Potential Use Of Asphalt Containing Synthetic Polymers For Asphalt Paving Mixes., Pei-Hung Yeh Jan 2000

A Study Of The Potential Use Of Asphalt Containing Synthetic Polymers For Asphalt Paving Mixes., Pei-Hung Yeh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Chemically modified polymer derivatives of potentially useful polymer modifiers from solid wastes, i.e. polyolefins or EPDM, were prepared by chlorination or maleation to improve asphalt blend compatibility. Chlorination of polyethylene can be controlled to convert crystalline HDPE into semicrystalline polymeric additives. Environmental scanning electron microscopy shows that dispersed CPE rich phase was larger than the HDPE rich phase in asphalt blends. Introducing chlorine atoms on polyethylene chains can improve compatibility of the asphalt-polymer blends through adjusting interaction between the components of asphalt and polymer. The grafting of maleic anhydride to polyolefins or EPDM was carried out either in solution or …
