Web Schemas In Whoweda, Sourav S. Bhowmick, Wee Keong Ng, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The term schema denotes whatever way a data model chooses to model its data. In this paper we discuss schemas of a set of HTML or XML documents retrieved from the Web in the context of our web warehousing system called WHOWEDA (Warehouse of Web Data). Web schemas are used to bind a web table that contains a collection of interlinked web documents called web tuples. These schemas specify some of the metadata, content and structural properties (in the form of predicates) shared by some of the Web documents and hyperlinks in the web table. They also summarize the hyperlink …

Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder Nov 2000

Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) has been subject to ongoing modifications since its full introduction in 1992. These changes were largely driven by vocal opponents of this educational reform. In this paper we give voice to teachers charged with implementing the curriculum and assessment directives of the VCE. Specifically, we draw on the experiences of close to 500 senior mathematics teachers – through interview and survey data - to consider the impact on them of the evolution of the VCE.

Adaptive Response Of Scaphyglottis Acostaei (Orchidaceae) To Microhabitat Variability, November 2000, Andrew Fisher Nov 2000

Adaptive Response Of Scaphyglottis Acostaei (Orchidaceae) To Microhabitat Variability, November 2000, Andrew Fisher

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Orchids exhibit many adaptations, including pseudobulbs which store water and root velamen, which assists in water uptake, to deal with the harsh, water stressed conditions that are an integral part of epiphytic life. Within a single host tree the intensity of water stress varies between microhabitats caused by presence of moss and bark fissures to reduce evaporation of water, and positions that increase or decrease exposure to wind, precipitation and sun. The orchid, Scaphyglottis acostaei exhibits variable pseudobulb sizes and water holding potential of velamen, possibly as a result of different levels of water stress and water availability. In this …

Acidic Environments Within Tank Bromeliads And Its Effect On Microorganism Community Richness, November 2000, Jennifer Wade Nov 2000

Acidic Environments Within Tank Bromeliads And Its Effect On Microorganism Community Richness, November 2000, Jennifer Wade

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Elfin forest tank bromeliads were shown to have lower pH when positioned below mats of epiphytic bryophyte than in open gaps. The effect of lower pH was studied to see if it influenced microorganism community abundance, species richness, evenness and diversity. It was found that increasing levels of pH over a range of 4.3 – 5.8, increased population sizes of most microorganisms. In fact abundance of individuals in the entire community spanned over an order of magnitude (82- 1936 individuals). Species richness also increased with pH but only as a function of increased abundance of individuals. One species richness was …

Dancing Around Employment At-Will: Can Fraud Provide Plaintiffs A Way To Hold Their Employers Liable, James E. Meadows Nov 2000

Dancing Around Employment At-Will: Can Fraud Provide Plaintiffs A Way To Hold Their Employers Liable, James E. Meadows

Missouri Law Review

For over a century, the employment at-will doctrine has formed an important part of American jurisprudence. The doctrine, and what some see as its potentially harsh results, have received strong criticism. In some states, courts have used their ability to modify the common law to alter the employment at-will doctrine by creating exceptions based on public policy, the use of employee handbooks, and face-to-face statements by managers that imply a promise of employment. The Missouri Court of Appeals for the Eastern District of Missouri recently gave discharged employees a new way to avoid the almost absolute bar of the employment …
