Measurement Of Soot And Char In Pulverized Coal Fly Ash, John M. Veranth, Thomas H. Fletcher, David W. Pershing, Adel F. Sarofim Jan 2000

Measurement Of Soot And Char In Pulverized Coal Fly Ash, John M. Veranth, Thomas H. Fletcher, David W. Pershing, Adel F. Sarofim

Faculty Publications

The unburned carbon in the fly ash produced by low-NOx pulverized coal combustion has been shown by electron microscopy to be a mixture of porous coal char particles and aggregates of submicron particles, which are thought to be soot. The carbon is bimodally distributed with large soot aggregates mixed with the char in the particles larger than 10 microns and dispersed soot found with the submicron particles. A method for determining the mass of soot and char by liquid-suspension gravity separation was used with both laboratory-scale and power plant fly ash samples. For low-NOx, staged, pilot-scale combustion of bituminous coal …

Black Gaius: A Quest For The Multicultural Origins Of The "Western Legal Tradition", P. G. Monateri Jan 2000

Black Gaius: A Quest For The Multicultural Origins Of The "Western Legal Tradition", P. G. Monateri

UC Law Journal

This article is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to reconstructing the historical self-consciousness of the Western Legal Tradition, showing the emergence of a model based on the more or less explicit assumptions of Roman, and subsequently Western, legal originalism and supremacy. In the second part, different areas are investigated--contract, theories of government, dispute settlements, and legal culture-to challenge the same existence of a Roman law at the root of modem Western laws. In this way the package of received ideas in legal scholarship about the history and nature of the Western legal culture is revealed to be …

An Empirical Study Of Sample-Selection Bias In Indices Of Commercial Real Estate, Henry J. Munneke, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2000

An Empirical Study Of Sample-Selection Bias In Indices Of Commercial Real Estate, Henry J. Munneke, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

Real estate price indices based solely on samples of sold properties may not accurately represent the population of properties due to potential sample-selection bias. This study addresses this potential for sample-selection bias in the construction of commercial price indices within the context of the Phoenix area of®ce market. The empirical analysis con®rms the presence of sample-selection bias in the estimation of the total price equation. However, within this sample, the price indices generated after correcting for sample-selection bias do not appear signi®cantly different from those that do not consider selectivity bias.

Career And Family: A Qualitative Study Of Working Mothers, Barbara Crummer Lincoln Edd Jan 2000

Career And Family: A Qualitative Study Of Working Mothers, Barbara Crummer Lincoln Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the lives of working mothers. The dramatic increase of mothers in the workforce in the past 40 years has led to an increasingly common lifestyle: women filling the roles of mother and professional concurrently. This dissertation used the personal narrative qualitative methodology to examine the lives of working mothers. Ten female graduates of the University of San Diego's Law School (JD), Business School (MBA) and Educational Administration Programs were interviewed by the researcher. These women have been in the workplace for an extended period of time, are currently raising at least one …

A Cross-Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Program Design And Teaching Efficacy: The Seaview Reading Support Program, Susan L. Bowers Smith Edd Jan 2000

A Cross-Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Program Design And Teaching Efficacy: The Seaview Reading Support Program, Susan L. Bowers Smith Edd

Dissertations

Teachers at Seaview Elementary School developed an innovative reading support program delivered by classroom teachers to increase the achievement of children who struggled to read literature in the district's core curriculum. Although studies of the program's impact on student achievement indicated that many of the children who received services in the classroom were able to fluently read grade level materials and improve their scores on standardized tests, issues created by the additional burden of this instruction on some teachers prevented the integration of the program into other grade levels and schools in the Seaview School District and Seaview Elementary School. …

The Pursuit Of The Hunt, Interrupted: Changing Literary Image Of Law, William J. Wagner Jan 2000

The Pursuit Of The Hunt, Interrupted: Changing Literary Image Of Law, William J. Wagner

Scholarly Articles

In the course of reaching its substantive conclusions, this article seeks to shed light on the theoretical and methodological requisites of a valid and fruitful application of literary sources in jurisprudence.

The article begins by explicating the original literary image of the pursuit of the hunt interrupted, within its thematic setting in Aeschylus. It then offers theoretical and methodological postulates for drawing out the fuller meaning for law and legal studies of the image. It explores variations on the same pattern of imagery in subsequent works of Western literature, and offers reflections on how these variations can enrich our understanding …

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This study, the Economic Impact of Wright State University International Students on the Dayton Local Economy, examines the financial contributions of international students at both the graduate and undergraduate level to the Dayton area. The study was conducted in the fall of 1998 among 120 students drawn from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The study agrees with similar research findings. International students are a source of economic benefits in the regions where they reside. International students at Wright State University received grants and income from Dayton area residents. Consequently, it recommends that universities should take steps to recruit and retain …

Geologic Factors Controlling Patterns Of Small‐Volume Basaltic Volcanism: Application To A Volcanic Hazards Assessment At Yucca Mountain, Nevada, Charles B. Connor, John A. Stamatakos, David A. Ferrill, Brittain E. Hill, Goodluck I. Ofoegbu, Michael Conway, Budhi Sagar, John Trapp Jan 2000

Geologic Factors Controlling Patterns Of Small‐Volume Basaltic Volcanism: Application To A Volcanic Hazards Assessment At Yucca Mountain, Nevada, Charles B. Connor, John A. Stamatakos, David A. Ferrill, Brittain E. Hill, Goodluck I. Ofoegbu, Michael Conway, Budhi Sagar, John Trapp

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The proposed high‐level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, is located within an active volcanic field. Probabilistic volcanic hazard models for future eruptions through the proposed repository depend heavily on our understanding of the spatial controls on volcano distribution at a variety of scales. On regional scales, Pliocene‐Quaternary volcano clusters are located east of the Bare Mountain fault. Extension has resulted in large‐scale crustal density contrast across the fault, and vents are restricted to low‐density areas of the hanging wall. Finite element modeling indicates that this crustal density contrast can result in transient pressure changes of up to 7 …

Gps Geodetic Constraints On Caribbean-North America Plate Motion, Charles Demets, Pamela E. Jansma, Glen S. Mattioli, Timothy H. Dixon, Fred Farina, Roger Bilham, Eric Calais, Paul Mann Jan 2000

Gps Geodetic Constraints On Caribbean-North America Plate Motion, Charles Demets, Pamela E. Jansma, Glen S. Mattioli, Timothy H. Dixon, Fred Farina, Roger Bilham, Eric Calais, Paul Mann

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We describe a model for Caribbean plate motion based on GPS velocities of four sites in the plate interior and two azimuths of the Swan Islands transform fault. The data are well fit by a single angular velocity, with average misfits approximately equal to the 1.5–3.0 mm yr−1 velocity uncertainties. The new model predicts Caribbean-North America motion ∼65% faster than predicted by NUVEL-1A, averaging 18–20±3 mm yr−1 (2σ) at various locations along the plate boundary. The data are best fit by a rotation pole that predicts obliquely convergent motion along the plate boundary east of Cuba, but are …

Neotectonics Of Puerto Rico And The Virgin Islands, Northeastern Caribbean, From Gps Geodesy, Pamela E. Jansma, Glen S. Mattioli, Alberto Lopez, Charles Demets, Timothy H. Dixon, Paul Mann, Eric Calais

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates is characterized primarily by left-lateral motion along predominantly east-west striking faults. Seismicity and marine geophysical survey data are consistent with at least two, and possibly three, microplates in the diffuse boundary zone in the northeastern Caribbean: (1) the Gonave, (2) the Hispaniola, and (3) the Puerto Rico-northern Virgin Islands (PRVI). We discuss results from GPS geodetic measurements acquired since 1994 to test the microplate hypothesis, define PRVI translation and rotation within the boundary zone, and constrain PRVI neotectonics. GPS-derived velocities are analyzed with respect to both North American and Caribbean plate …

Precedent And Judicial Power After The Founding, Polly J. Price Jan 2000

Precedent And Judicial Power After The Founding, Polly J. Price

Faculty Articles

A recent decision by a panel of the Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit enlivened the controversy over court rules that prevent citation to unpublished opinions when it held that the Circuit's non-citation rule violates Article III of the United States Constitution. This Article affirms the view that judicial power includes a doctrine of precedent, without relying solely upon an originalist interpretation of Article III. This approach identifies a consistent "core idea" of precedent that courts must consider how a similar case was decided in the past, even where there are varying ideas about the binding nature of that …

Lifting The Veil: The Arts, Broadcasting And Irish Society, Brian O'Neill Jan 2000

Lifting The Veil: The Arts, Broadcasting And Irish Society, Brian O'Neill

Articles

This article examines the role played by broadcasting in Irish artistic and cultural life from independence in 1922 to 1960 with the onset of formal modernization. It examines the cultural context for the arts in early independent Ireland in which a mood of ambivalence and sometimes outright hostility to high culture prevailed. Rather than a profound disjunction between pre- and post-modernizing phases of Irish history, however, this article argues that there were important lines of continuity in cultural experience, in particular middle-class experience of the arts, which continue to inform Irish cultural life up to the present. Such cultural experience …

Nlrb Remedies: Where Are They Going?, Leanord Page

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The National Labor Relations Board's remedies are the vehicles through which the policies of the National Labor Relations Act are realized, and the means by which rights conferred by the Act are protected. Through the appropriate remedies, the Board ensures that conditions at the workplace are restored to those which existed before the onset of unlawful conduct. Effective remedies also deter unlawful conduct and promote voluntary compliance with the Act. Congress chose not to specify the precise remedies that would be available to the Board, understanding the Board's need for flexibility to meet diverse situations and those which Congress did …

History, Law, And Indian Claims: An Introduction, Kent Mcneil, Jill Martin Jan 2000

History, Law, And Indian Claims: An Introduction, Kent Mcneil, Jill Martin

Articles & Book Chapters

In the past 25 years, interest in Indian history has increased dramatically. This is part of a more general shift in historical focus, as many historians have realized that their predecessors tended to undervalue the roles and contributions of women, racial minorities, and other marginalized groups in the social, economic, and political development of North American society. In the American West, this shift in perspective has spawned a "new Western history" that has revitalized historical inquiry and deepened our understanding of the region's unique past.Originally published in Journal of the West 39:3 (Summer 2000). Making Sense Of Aboriginal And Treaty Rights, Brian Slattery Jan 2000

Making Sense Of Aboriginal And Treaty Rights, Brian Slattery

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper proposes a basic framework for understanding the decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada relating to aboriginal and treaty rights. It argues that the foundations of these rights lie in the common law doctrine of aboriginal rights, which originated in ancient custom generated by historical relations between the Crown and indigenous peoples, as informed by basic principles of justice. This sui generis doctrine is par t of the common law of Canada and operates uniformly across the country, it also provides the context for interpreting section 35(1) of the Constitution Act, 1982. The doctrine of aboriginal rights has …

The Strategic Organization Of Global Law Firms : Perceptions From Inside And Outside The Firm, Carol M. Sanchez Jan 2000

The Strategic Organization Of Global Law Firms : Perceptions From Inside And Outside The Firm, Carol M. Sanchez

Peer Reviewed Articles

During the past decade, the legal services industry has undergone a sea change, in large part due to the globalization of business. Law firms, especially those headquartered in major financial centers, are expanding overseas at a fast and furious pace in an attempt to accommodate their clients’ needs and to capture a share of new and emerging markets for legal services. The increasing importance of the European Union as a new source of pan-European or “federal” law, and the establishment of a common currency, the Euro, has spurred many firms to open offices in Brussels, Frankfurt and other centers of …
