Test Result Use In The Elementary Classroom, Kevan Eileen Ommen
Test Result Use In The Elementary Classroom, Kevan Eileen Ommen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examines elementary teacher use of district curriculum-based test results in making instructional decisions. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to elementary teachers asking about their routine practices when using test results, their comfort level in doing so, and training they have received. Returns from 944 teachers were analyzed, and it was determined some concerns exist related to the interpretation and use of test information by elementary teachers. It was concluded that teachers may need training to improve their skills in test result interpretation, and the formats used by school districts to distribute test results may need modification. In …

Sequence Stratigraphy And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Member Of The Deep Spring Formation: Implications For The Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Boundary In The Basin And Range Province, Western United States, Shannon Michelle Parsons
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Deep Spring Formation of the southern Basin and Range Province provides information valuable in locating and correlating the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary in western North America. Sequence-stratigraphic analysis of the lower Deep Spring Formation revealed three sequence boundaries. The proposed sequence-stratigraphic model includes early highstand slumps, a feature interpreted to be unique to mixed systems, which form at the onset of the Highstand Systems Tract; This study identified the small shelly fossil Cloudina in the lower Deep Spring Formation. Cloudina was previously unrecognized at this stratigraphic level in the Basin and Range. This Neoproterozoic fossil is associated in the lower Deep …

Permutation Polynomials And Systems Of Permutation Polynomials In Several Variables Over Finite Rings, Angela Marie Starr
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper will present the historical development of theorems regarding permutation polynomials in several variables over finite fields. Single variable permutation polynomials will be discussed since they are so important to the discussions which will follow. Theorems involving permutation polynomials and systems of permutation polynomials will also be considered. It will be shown that many of the interesting results obtained for finite fields can be generalized to finite rings.

The Effects Of Spiritual Care Nursing Education On Nurses' Comfort In The Delivery Of Spiritual Care, Carmen E Sterling-Fisher
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Spiritual care of patients has been an important part of nursing since Florence Nightingale's days, although the spiritual nature of nursing care is often overlooked in today's nursing community. According to Highfield (1992) and Lilley (1987), issues regarding the physical and psychosocial aspects of nursing care continue to predominate nursing literature despite the long standing documented value of spiritual aspects of nursing care (Burkhardt and Nagai-Jacobson, 1994; Robinson, 1994 and Ross, 1994), resulting in limited available learning opportunities related to spiritual care. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an educational intervention concerning spiritual nursing care …

Ocr-Directed Evaluation Of Binarization Techniques, Diego Antonio Vinas
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this work is to study different binarization methods and to investigate their effect on the performance of OCR systems. Two sets of document images and four OCR systems were used to study several binarization algorithms. The simplest method that chooses the median value of the gray levels, i.e., 127 from 256 levels, as the global threshold value did not work well unless the scanner characteristic matched with the nature of a collection of documents by chance. The best-fixed method uses the global threshold value that minimizes the number of overall errors for a combination of an OCR …

An Augustinian Analysis Of The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Jon Mcclendon White
An Augustinian Analysis Of The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Jon Mcclendon White
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Applying the Christian principles of depraved human nature, expectation of detrimental behavior from irrational actors, and rational attempts to limit the destructiveness of war, Augustine would conclude that the declared nuclear weapons states have a moral obligation to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons. Laws suitable to the needs of the times are the appropriate method for accomplishing this. The pending Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is one such law. Because the CTBT bans all nuclear explosions and establishes an intrusive inspection scheme, it will have an impact on the U. S. Department of Energy (DoE). DoE should respond by participating …

Density Functional Calculations Of Rubidium Under Pressure, Anthony Jon Zukaitis
Density Functional Calculations Of Rubidium Under Pressure, Anthony Jon Zukaitis
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
With developments in X-ray diffractometry, experimentalists have been able to resolve the complex structures that had eluded them in the past. One area of this interest is in the regime of alkali metals under pressure. For years, the alkali metals have been viewed as simple systems whose properties can be understood with fairly simple ideas. Under pressure, things get interesting and one observes complex crystal structures in all of the alkali metals under high enough pressure. What is more interesting is that there appears to be many similarities in the phase diagrams of the alkali metals. This hints that this …

Film And Architecture: Discovering The Self-Reflection Of Frank Capra And Frank Lloyd Wright Through Contextual Analysis, Marie Lynore Kohler
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Film and architecture were analyzed to evaluate the rhetorical potential these media hold in communicating the self-reflection of their creators. In an attempt to uncover common communication elements which further link the relationship between film and architecture, specific works of director Frank Capra and architect Frank Lloyd Wright were examined. The study utilizes both an historical, case study approach, combined with a contextual analysis of two selected works. Because Zettl's (1990) theory of applied media aesthetics emphasizes the importance of the medium in the communication process, this methodology was applied to Capra's film It's A Wonderful Life and Wright's building …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Little academic research exists of the American Indian takeover of the hamlet of Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1973. This thesis is an analysis of the discourse of the Wounded Knee incident, which served dual purposes for the activists. First, American Indian discourse served as a reinforcing agent to American Indians, both at Wounded Knee and across the country. Second, the rhetoric was meant to effect change within the general American public. This thesis will adopt and expand on Randall Lake's 1983 theory of the consummatory function of rhetoric by dissecting the fascinating discourse that shaped the identity of the …

A Marxist Analysis Of An Editorial Column As A Site Of Struggle For Meaning, Theresa Hubbard Pfeifer
A Marxist Analysis Of An Editorial Column As A Site Of Struggle For Meaning, Theresa Hubbard Pfeifer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study calls into question the repressive authoritarianism of state-corporate capitalism and the "march of the megamedia" by investigating the media's role in perpetuating and sustaining hegemony. According to Marxist critics, the collective operations of the culture industry have worked to destroy the revolutionary potential of the working class. In a resistant textual reading and content analysis utilizing Gramsci's theory of hegemony, this study looks at how a newspaper editorial fatalizes readers into passive acquiescence of the prevailing political and socioeconomic system. To gain the willing consent of the masses, the technocratic elites of media systems create a world that …
