This essay draws on the work of French philosopher Louis Althusser, particularly his contributions to the development of ideology, in an assessment of the relationship between communication ana freedom. Althusser's understanding of freedom as an ideological creation not only privileges the role of ideology in the construction of social relationships, but also calls into question the complex interplay between media, society, and freedom. The current billion-dollar anti-drug public service announcement deal is interrogated in an effort to illustrate how the United States government has been inserting ideologically driven propaganda into prime time television shows with the full co-operation and approval …

Transforming Cultural Conflict In An Age Of Complexity, Michelle Lebaron

This article will survey several definitions of culture, arguing that the most useful approach is to define culture broadly and to recognize its significance to most or all conflicts. Some of the ways that culture affects conflicts will be outlined, accompanied by examples. These include: culture as a lens that both facilitates and blocks effective communication; culture and world view differences as the subject of conflicts; and conflicts related to identity and recognition as facets of cultural differences. Solo piano performances evolved into a unique form of public concert (the piano recital) during the early part of the nineteenth century. Social, intellectual and economic factors were involved in creating the conditions necessary for this evolution, and it was in London that the most significant early developments occurred. It is the premise of this study that the economic and social influence of the newly wealthy, English, upper middle class was instrumental in creating a cultural tradition of solo piano performances. This research employed a one-shot case study design to examine the relationship between the dependent variable, acquisition of the initial elementary principalship position, and several independent variables. Independent variables included the presence or lack of professional mentoring; the type of mentoring received by proteges; the gender of the mentor and protege; the perceived impact of mentoring, dependent upon the method of establishment of the relationship; and the career path of respondents. The primary thesis of this study is that beginning with the pre-Tiananmen Square incident of 1989, American popular and institutional images of China focused on the reformist nature the government, but following the military crackdown in June 1989, this optimism dwindled and resulted in the creation of an ambivalent cross-cultural atmosphere toward the Chinese for the next half decade. When Chinese leaders decided to undertake military exercises in the Taiwan Strait in mid-1995, America's perception of the PRC swung even further in a distinctly negative direction; an event that marked the outset of a three year period during which Chinese …

Recent research in linguistics, and specifically within the field of applied linguistics, has been concerned with the different ways that speech acts are realized in different languages. This is so that language learners can learn to adequately conform to those norms in the target language. However, much of this research has assumed that all speakers of the relevant languages, such as American English, for example, are homogeneous, that they all perform the given speech acts in the same ways. This thesis discusses the importance of the cultural elements within a literary text when an analysis of the text is accomplished. Two novels are analyzed in terms of their cultural setting: The Bell Jar , an American novel set in the 1950s written by Sylvia Plath, and Crónica del desamor , a Spanish novel set in the late 1970s, written by Rosa Montero. A cultural analysis of the novels appears necessary in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of them. This study was a detailed descriptive investigation into the different interpretations and perceptions that are evoked by readers of United States literature, based on their cultural backgrounds and experience. Grounded in research that advocates for the convergence of culture and literature in the language classroom and a research design based on reader-response theory, this study explored the responses of two groups of students from the University of Portland: international students, the majority of whom were English as a Second Language (ESL), and U.S. citizens, all of whom were native speakers of American English.

Bilingual children with specific language impairment (SLI) from non English speaking background (NESB) present a major diagnostic problem to speech pathologist and educationist in an English speaking country. There has been no known study on the simultaneous narrative development involving bilingual Chinese children with and without SLI. This longitudinal case study examined the relationship of Chinese (L1) and English (L2) in narrative development in a child with no language difficulty (Child LN) and a child (Child L1) diagnosed as having SLI. Wadjela and Nyungar experts (of managerial, administrative, service staff), from the same South-West city location in Western Australia were randomly chosen from the non-government human service field for separate workshops and asked the question “what makes a non-government human service organisation effective?" The purpose was to compare the group consensus answer between the two separate workshop groups. The Nyungars are the Indigenous people in the South-West of Western Australia and the Wadjelas are the Non-Indigenous people living in the same area. Although minority status has been associated with low academic achievement, the “high Asian achieving syndrome" remains as one of the unresolved sociological puzzles. Consistent evidence suggests that regardless of the family status, children from the Asian migrant families, settled in the industrialised countries, tend to perform academically better than their counterparts from the dominant group. The authors examined parenting practices and developmental expectations among 38 Hispanic and 38 Anglo-American mothers living in the United States. Mothers of children 3 to 5 years of age completed the Parent Behavior Checklist (R. A. Fox, 1994), a 100-item measure of parents' developmental expectations, discipline, and nurturing practices. In addition, the authors appraised the Hispanic mothers' acculturation and selected them for participation if their scores on an acculturation scale indicated (a) that their lifestyle was predominantly Hispanic and (b) that they had not been assimilated into the dominant culture. Survey And Evaluation Of Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (Npv) For The Control Of Helicoverpa Armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Nocduidae) On Selected Vegetable Crops In Kenya, Joseph Baya

Samples of helicoverpa armigera larvae obtained from several sites and crops in kenya in surveys carried out during june 1998 to october 1999 were examined at icipe, nairobi. They revealed natural infection by nuclear polyhedrosis virus (npv). Sixteen isolates were collected altogether. In laboratory bioassays on fieldcollected third instar larvae fed on contaminated diet with two local npv isolates and the indian (icrisat) isolate, the cumulative percent larval mortality did not differ significantly but the local isolates were apparently superior. Percentage larval mortality recorded 9 days after inoculation for the kenyan isolates were 78.3±7.38% and 68.3±5.68% respectively, compared to 55.9±2.10% …
