A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of The Infection Of Water Oak (Quercus Nigra) By Taphrina Caerulescens, Josephine Taylor, Dale O. Birdwell Jan 2000

A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of The Infection Of Water Oak (Quercus Nigra) By Taphrina Caerulescens, Josephine Taylor, Dale O. Birdwell

Faculty Publications

The fungal pathogen Taphrina caerulescens was isolated from leaves of water oak (Quercus nigra) exhibiting symptoms of oak leaf blister. Healthy leaves were inoculated with a suspension of cells from pure culture in order to examine the infection process. Scanning electron microscopy was used to monitor budding of T. caerulescens cells, formation of germ tubes, and indirect penetration of leaf tissue through stomata, which occurred within 48 h post-inoculation. Direct penetration was not observed.

How Do We Keep Desire From Passing With Beauty?, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 2000

How Do We Keep Desire From Passing With Beauty?, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

On the day of her party in June 1923, Clarissa Dalloway worries about her attraction to beauty in the face of a political and humanitarian crisis:

He [Richard] was already halfway to the House of Commons, to his Armenians, his Albanians, having settled her on the sofa, looking at his roses. And people would say, “Clarissa Dalloway is spoilt.” She cared much more for her roses than for the Armenians. Hunted out of existence, maimed, frozen, the victims of cruelty and injustice (she had heard Richard say so over and over again)—no, she could feel nothing for the Albanians, or …

Evidence For Microbial Fe(Iii) Reduction In Anoxic, Mining-Impacted Lake Sediments (Lake Coeur D’Alene, Idaho), David E. Cummings, Anthony W. March, Benjamin Bostick, Stefan Spring, Frank Caccavo Jr., Scott Fendorf, Frank Rosenzweig Jan 2000

Evidence For Microbial Fe(Iii) Reduction In Anoxic, Mining-Impacted Lake Sediments (Lake Coeur D’Alene, Idaho), David E. Cummings, Anthony W. March, Benjamin Bostick, Stefan Spring, Frank Caccavo Jr., Scott Fendorf, Frank Rosenzweig

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Mining-impacted sediments of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, contain more than 10% metals on a dry weight basis, approximately 80% of which is iron. Since iron (hydr)oxides adsorb toxic, ore-associated elements, such as arsenic, iron (hydr)oxide reduction may in part control the mobility and bioavailability of these elements. Geochemical and microbiological data were collected to examine the ecological role of dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacteria in this habitat. The concentration of mild-acid-extractable Fe(II) increased with sediment depth up to 50 g kg−1, suggesting that iron reduction has occurred recently. The maximum concentrations of dissolved Fe(II) in interstitial water (41 mg liter …

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey Jan 2000

Teaching Composition As A Social Process, Bruce Mccomiskey

All USU Press Publications

Bruce McComiskey is a strong advocate of social approaches to teaching writing. However, he opposes composition teaching that relies on cultural theory for content, because it too often prejudges the ethical character of institutions and reverts unnecessarily to product-centered practices in the classroom. He opposes what he calls the "read-this-essay-and-do-what-the-author-did method of writing instruction: read Roland Barthes's essay 'Toys' and write a similar essay; read John Fiske's essay on TV and critique a show." McComiskey argues for teaching writing as situated in discourse itself, in the constant flow of texts produced within social relationships and institutions. He urges writing teachers …

Institutional Critique: A Rhetorical Methodology For Change, James E. Porter, Patricia Sullivan, Stuart Blythe, Jeffrey T. Grabill, Elizabeth A. Miles Jan 2000

Institutional Critique: A Rhetorical Methodology For Change, James E. Porter, Patricia Sullivan, Stuart Blythe, Jeffrey T. Grabill, Elizabeth A. Miles

English and Creative Writing Faculty Publications

We offer institutional critique as an activist methodology for changing institutions. Since institutions are rhetorical entities, rhetoric can be deployed to change them. In its effort to counter oppressive institutional structures, the field of rhetoric and composition has focused its attention chiefly on the composition classroom, on the department of English, and on disciplinary forms of critique. Our focus shifts the scene of action and argument to professional writing and to public discourse, using spatial methods adapted from postmodern geography and critical theory.

The Pitchman In Print: Oral Performance Art In Text And Context, Joseph Ugoretz Jan 2000

The Pitchman In Print: Oral Performance Art In Text And Context, Joseph Ugoretz

Publications and Research

Oral performance art, patterned performative speech for an audience, is perhaps the oldest and most ubiquitous human art form. Specific instances of this art include the performances of griots and guslars, troubadors and shamans, as well as rappers and riddlers, preachers and politicians. While this art form is by definition oral, it is also the case that, frequently, literary art has represented oral performance art. There is written art which depicts oral art, which describes it, appropriates it, criticizes and co‑opts it.

In this dissertation, I define oral performance art as constituting a separate and unique artistic genre, one which …

Textiles, Scholarship, And Art Education: An Art College Perspective, Wendy Landry Jan 2000

Textiles, Scholarship, And Art Education: An Art College Perspective, Wendy Landry

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In many communities the art college is the last formal refuge of active textile-making knowledge and heritage. This location appears to value playful, risky, or challenging material explorations which might result in creative design or meaningful visual expression. This should be the best environment for cultivating adventurous students able to integrate a wide range of experience and resources towards generating new ideas for interesting contemporary textiles. It could be a good place in which to discover how textiles contribute to human experience and history, and how they are meaningful. However, I submit that this art environment is still detrimental to …

Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner Jan 2000

Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner

Articles

Using Nietzsche's great essay on the uses and disadvantages of history for life as his jumping-off point, Judge Posner examines the utility of the study of history for adjudication and legal scholarship. He argues, following Nietzsche; that the wrong kind of historical study can be very bad for "life " including law, while the right kind-the kind deployed by a pragmatic judge or a policy-oriented legal scholar-may deviate from literal accuracy in the direction of a rhetorical and imaginative narrative of historical events that can be constructively employed in a forward-looking approach to legal problems.

A Study Of Mentoring And The Acquisition Of The Elementary Principalship., Lorraine Weisser Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research employed a one-shot case study design to examine the relationship between the dependent variable, acquisition of the initial elementary principalship position, and several independent variables. Independent variables included the presence or lack of professional mentoring; the type of mentoring received by proteges; the gender of the mentor and protege; the perceived impact of mentoring, dependent upon the method of establishment of the relationship; and the career path of respondents. Additionally, the study examined the relationship between having been a protege and the tendency to mentor others. To examine these relationships, the Mentoring and the Elementary Principalship Survey was …

An Observation And A Strange But True 'Tale': What Might The Historical Trials Of Animals Tell Us About The Transformative Potential Of Law In American Culture?, Paul Schiff Berman Jan 2000

An Observation And A Strange But True 'Tale': What Might The Historical Trials Of Animals Tell Us About The Transformative Potential Of Law In American Culture?, Paul Schiff Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Few would dispute that law and legal procedures lie at the core of American self-identity and are woven deeply into the fabric of our culture. Indeed, our nation's faith in law has frequently been the subject of criticism. Most recently, self-proclaimed "communitarian" commentators have warned that our insistence on legal solutions is encouraging us to become a society of litigants whose attachment to "rights talk" and legal battles is thwarting our ability to reach consensus on social issues or instill shared values in our communities. While there are many possible responses to such a critique, this Essay offers one that …

Cultural Resistance To Global Governance, Joel Richard Paul Jan 2000

Cultural Resistance To Global Governance, Joel Richard Paul

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article maps out the terrain in which state actors and legal scholars make claims premised on a cultural exception to justify derogating from international legal norms. The author’s aim is to understand why some of these claimed cultural practices displace international legal norms, while other practices are dismissed as violating international legal norms. Part II will examine this discourse in relation to the rights of women and sexual minorities. This article will show that the international community generally regards gender norms as cultural and the international legal norm of gender equality usually defers to national cultural practices. Part III …
