Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart Apr 2000

Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart

Localités/Localities

The relationships between the wholes and parts of American history are vital to our understanding of ourselves as a nation and a people. Many of the central paradoxes and ambiguities of our national existence cannot be adequately understood without exploring the interplay between localism and nationalism that runs like a lietmotiv throughout American history. The influence of the westward movement in our nation’s past, the give and take of federal-state relations, the internecine sectionalism of the nineteenth century, and the more benign regionalism of the twentieth century raise important questions about the relationship between local history and national heritage, and …

"Lest We Forget": Louisiana's United Daughters Of The Confederacy And Southern Identity, Alicia Adams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) organized in 1894 and became one of the largest and most popular patriotic societies among white southern women. The Louisiana Division of the UDC formed in 1899 and joined the national organization in its educational, memorial, literary, social, and benevolent pursuits. How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell Apr 2000

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell

Theses and Dissertations

The news media link anthropological discovery and the communications discipline. In this study, press stories about the Yanomami Indians of northern Brazil and neighboring Venezuela have been studied and narratively analyzed according to Narrative Paradigm Theory. While not an audience study, plausible interpretations of ideal audience member values and insights into the question of human identity are presented. It is argued that the media are storytellers who tell the audience about itself by telling it about others recursively.

Press coverage of the Yanomami is divided into eight general categories. These include the environment, effects of "civilization," warfare/violence, massacre, gold miners, …

U.S. And Indonesian Children's Descriptions Of Relational Aggression: Gender, Development And Cultural Comparisons, Elizabeth A. Jansen '00 Apr 2000

U.S. And Indonesian Children's Descriptions Of Relational Aggression: Gender, Development And Cultural Comparisons, Elizabeth A. Jansen '00

Honors Projects

Previous studies of aggression in childhood have found that boys, as a group, are more aggressive than girls. The majority of these studies, however, focus only on physical aggression. Recently several studies have been conducted that differentiate relational aggression from physical aggression. Relational aggression involves harming others through the purposeful damage to their peer relationships (i.e., spreading rumors or ostracizing a peer from a group activity). Several studies have found sex differences in relational aggression, as well as physical aggression. The present study explores gender, developmental, and cultural differences and similarities in relational, physical, and verbal aggression in US and …

Armageddon At The Millennial Dawn, Conrad E. Ostwalt Apr 2000

Armageddon At The Millennial Dawn, Conrad E. Ostwalt

Journal of Religion & Film

The New Year has come and gone and presents a time for reflection on popular culture's fascination with eschatology and apocalypticism. In the few years leading up to the year 2000, we witnessed a growing interest in end-of-the-world scenarios as they were portrayed in the movies and other forms of popular entertainment. Looking back but a short while, our imaginations were stimulated by such movies as 12 Monkeys, the critically abused Waterworld, the comedic Independence Day, and the visionary Contact. These promising movies suggested the last couple of years of the millennium would see a crop …

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether differences exist between those steeped in the practice of the use of the computer in music production and those reared in a mostly analog environment. In addition, this study aimed to develop theory concerning who may be in or out of the technology revolution in music.
